    Biography
Paine settled in Boston and was appointed organist of the West Church. He began teaching music at Harvard in 1862, and in 1875 he became a professor of musicthe first in America. Paine spent the majority of his life struggling to raise the level of organ playing and musicianship in the United States. (When in Berlin his American nationality was viewed by Germans as a handicap). Though his works were never considered avante garde, they are substantial and infused with inspiration.
    Points of Interest
    • Paine was one of the founding members of the American Guild of Organists
    • He was partially responsible for the installation of the Walcker organ in Boston, the case of which inspired the design for the Mormon Tabernacle organ.

While he was an influential figure in American music in general, Paine only wrote one opera, the title of which various sources give as either Azora or Azra; it has never been fully staged, although it has been said that a performance planned at the Met was cancelled due to the inability to find singers for the major roles who could sing in English. Paine had a considerable impact on musical development in his time, as a composer, as an educator, and as the founder of the Harvard music department.

In 1858, he set sail for Germany, and remained there for almost four years. He studied organ performance, counterpoint and composition with Karl August Haupt, and received instruction in singing from Gustav William Teschner. During this time, Paine played several organ recitals in Berlin, which were praised in many music journals. His curriculum, which excluded much of contemporary American music, concentrated on Bach and Palestrina. This curriculum was widely imitated, first at Yale and then throughout the country, and set the standard for what music was considered worthy of study and what music was not. Not just a professor Paine wrote an anthem

    Paul John Knowles
A Florida native, born in 1946, Knowles logged his first arrest at age 19, spending roughly six months of each year thereafter in jail, on various convictions for burglary and auto theft. He was serving time in Raiford when he began corresponding with California divorcee Angela Covic, and she visited the prison long enough to accept his proposal of marriage, shelling out money for lawyers to win his release. Parole came through in May 1974, and Knowles flew directly to San Francisco for the nuptials, but Covic had changed her mind, warned off by a psychic who foresaw the entry of a new, dangerous man in her life. The night she dumped him, Knowles allegedly went out and killed three people on the streets of San Francisco, but his claim has not been verified.
Back home in Jacksonville, Knowles was jailed after a bar fight, but he picked a lock and escaped on July 26, 1974. That night, he invaded the home of 65-year-old Alice Curtis, leaving her bound and gagged as he ransacked her house for money, finally taking off in her car. She choked to death on the gag, but Knowles hung around town for a few days, using her vehicle, until police connected him with the crime and his picture began turning up on TV. Preparing to drop the hot car on a quiet residential street, he spied 11-year-old Lillian Anderson and her seven-year-old sister Mylette, recognizing them as friends of his mother. Convinced the girls had seen him and would notify police, he kidnapped both of them and dumped their strangled bodies in a swamp outside of town.
