63. John Knowles On A Separate Peace
Reflections of john knowles about his Novel. john knowles on A Separate Peacehe following is the first part of a series of reflections by john knowles.
http://library.exeter.edu/dept/separate_peace/knowles.html
Reflections of John Knowles about his Novel. John Knowles on A Separate Peace he following is the first part of a series of reflections by John Knowles. Knowles graduated from Exeter in 1945 and is the author of A Separate Peace, now a movie about Exeter students in the forties. All the faculty here were between fifty and seventy years old when I first entered Exeter in the fall of 1942. I had a young French teacher and one other young teacher but they had left for the war by midyear. All of the faculty on the campus were so much older than we were, that we had no connection with them. They just were too old, too tired, and too busy. One of the reasons that Gene and Finny develop this intensely close friendship is that they had no one to relate to; no older person to pattern themselves on, to look and talk things over with, they only had each other. All the students really had to relate to each other. I was happy to be on the swimming team and Dan Fowler was the only faculty man I could begin to think I had any connection with as far as rapport. A faculty member might drop in once a term to a club or organization meeting, but that was rare. The master of Sleeper House was inaccessible. I was in Peabody with Mr. Galt and Mr. Bissell. This situation of the faculty explains a lot about the book. The students were thrown back upon themselves. One faculty member I mentioned in the book is a reference to a real person. I wrote about old Mr. Wittman, Doc Wittman, as Mr. Patchwithers. He is the very old professor who gives the party in the book. I think Doc Wittman is no longer living.

Likewise, when I listen to him play the guitar, his phrasing and chord voicings feel obvious and natural to me...like listening to myself. That's why I was so blown away when I first heard these recordings. They were my dad, but with so many unexpected twists and turns and with a truth and urgency that brought to mind the records I used to 'borrow' from him Glen Gould, Bill Evans, George Harrison. I swear I don't need to borrow the car. But I think my dad somehow got cool. Jay Knowles John Knowles grew up listening to and learning from Chet Atkins recordings. He and Atkins met in 1973 while John was teaching guitar at Eastfield Community College in Mesquite, Texas. After an early collaboration won a Grammy award, Knowles moved to Nashville where he and Atkins produced a number of educational books and videos. Knowles and Atkins recorded with Liona Boyd and John Pell as The First Nashville Guitar Quartet. In 1996, Atkins awarded Knowles the first Honorary CGP (Certified Guitar Player) degree.

JOHN KNOWLES
My family: Susan Mary Knowles, Stella Florence Knowles (nee Hunter), Geoffrey Eric Knowles and John Hunter Knowles - in Howard Road, Walthamstow in about 1957.
When I was seven we moved to Howard Road and lived in a flat there until I left home to go to college at the age of 19. My father was Geoffrey Eric KNOWLES, a teacher who taught at Knotts Green School, Leyton, Woodside School, was deputy head at Coppermill Lane Junior School, Stoneydown Park Junior School and head at Davies Lane Junior School at Leytonstone. Whilst at Davies Lane the two Ross boys Jonathan Ross and his brother Paul Ross attended and had just begun their show-business careers by appearing on television advertisements.

John Bonser and His Family
By Roger Knowles Thompson
This article about John Bonser and His Family was kindly submitted by Roger Knowles Thompson in July 2001. Though John Bonser never lived in Washington State, his daughter and son-in-law (William and Abigail Bonser Casto) were the amongst the first white settlers of the Issaquah area (then Squak Valley) and were victims of a violent murder by Indians at their cabin near today's Pickering Barn. Through his contribution, Mr. Thompson has greatly increased our knowledge of the Casto family's background, and provided us with wonderful photographs from the Hannah Bonser Knowles Collection that allow us to "put names to faces." We post this information and these photos with sincerest gratitude! David Bangs
President, Issaquah Historical Society
July 2001 Mr. Thompson, who resides in Tucson, AZ, can be reached by e-mail at otho10@home.com

"Hi, I'm Etta Molly Gee, Professor of Library Science at Vocabulary University. We welcome you to our library site where vocabulary has been pulled from classic texts/recommended reading. I have suggestions for your FAQ: How can you, as a teacher, student and/or life-long learner use the V.U. classic texts vocabulary lists?
(Tip 1) Individually or as a group, choose words that are unknown to you from the list. To help memorize, look up and write down the definition, part of speech and use the new word in a sentence of more than 6 words.
(Tip 2) Write a story, postcard, letter or journal entry using 15-25 words in context.
(Tip 3) Working individually or in a group, pair synonyms and/or antonyms. Determine how many words are adjectives, nouns and verbs.
Remember, vocabulary mastery comes from encountering new words in assigned reading, in studying vocabulary word lists and using words in context." A high school recommended book, A Separate Peace written by John Knowles, gives the student the opportunity to learn SAT-College Prep vocabulary in context. We have selected 73 words to encourage study and provide helpful clues in learning.

    John Knowles Paine:
    Beginning the Tradition
    Aaron Copland. Leonard Bernstein.
    Igor Stravinsky. John Knowles Paine.
These four were among twenty-five composers, musicians, and educators inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 1998. The names of most of the inductees for that year are familiar ones, but how many people could guess which category - composer, musician or educator - John Knowles Paine falls under?
    Humble Beginnings
John Knowles Paine was born in Portland, Maine in 1839, the son of a music store owner. Music ran in the family: his father was the conductor of the town band, a position his father had held. Paine showed musical talent at an early age, and was encouraged to cultivate that talent in studies with a business partner of his father, Herman Kotzchmar. Kotzchmar was a German immigrant who came to the United States as an itinerant orchestral musician, but became the leading musician in Portland. Under his tutelage the young Paine studied organ, piano, harmony, and counterpoint.

Bill Spann, TX: John, My question to you is why didn't you tell Larry Barnes of your Abilene connection to yours truly. I know, you just were thinking of telling him about Chet and that is reason enough to forget. I too forget everything else when I'm thinking of Chet. And John, thanks for all the wonderful things you do, have done and will continue to do in perpetuating Chet's musical legacy. My regards to Becky.
    John:
Bill, I did think about you when I was answering Larry's question about an Abiline connection. I guess I was just a little reluctant to be a name-dropper.
