Joy Kogawa Joy Kogawa is an award winning author and Member of the Order of Canada. She has published several collections of poetry, essays, children's literature and the novels Obasan Istuka , and The Rain Ascends . As a second-generation Japanese Canadian, Kogawa and her family were evacuated to Slocan, British Columbia and later to Coaldale, Alberta during the Second World War. She has been involved in seeking redress from the Canadian government for the internment of 20,000 Japanese Canadians during World War II. Joy is a member of Toronto Dollar Community Projects Inc. Toronto, a people-centred city, a city of neighbourhoods and communities, is a beacon of hope and health in the world. That light would be darkened in the now vibrant neighbourhoods of Toronto Island and downtown Toronto, if the ill-conceived airport expansion were to be realized. I vigorously oppose a project that would damage the peace, the well being and the health of residents that live in and nourish the heart of this presently beautiful city.”

    Indexes to Book Reviews
It is sometimes difficult to locate literary criticism about a work which has only recently been published. It takes a substantial amount of time for critical scholarship to develop and often the best source of information regarding books and plays is the book reviews which appear in current periodicals or newspapers. Individual poems are rarely reviewed. To find information about a particular poem a better source is a periodical index or a bibliography. These sources are described in chapter four and chapter five of this Guide. Rutherford Library houses two major indexes to reviews, Book Review Digest and Book Review Index . Both are located at UA Rutherford N Flr 1 Indexes - Index Tables, 1st Floor, Humanities and Social Sciences Library (Rutherford North) . The current periodicals and the bound periodicals ,which are indexed in Book Review Digest and Book Review Index , are located in Rutherford South and North respectively.

This is the most current of the book review indexes; it often includes excerpts of negative and/or favourable reviews and provides a word count which indicates whether the review is a paragraph or a substantial essay. Entries are alphabetical by author and a subject/title index is included. The periodicals covered by the

    "Too Young To Fight":
    Joy Kogawa's true story
Joy and her brother are Canadian - they were born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. But their family is originally from Japan. On Sunday December 7, the Japanese military bombed Pearl Harbor - a naval base in Hawaii, USA, five kilometers west of Honolulu. About 3,000 people were killed or wounded. That attack brought Japan into World War II on the side of Germany and Italy, and brought the United States into the war on the side of Canada and Britain. Which meant that Japan was now Canada's enemy. And every Canadian of Japanese descent was seen as an enemy too, no matter how loyal or "Canadian" they were. Canadian newspapers started describing the Japanese as "ugly... unwanted... deceitful... somehow sub-human." Tim and Joy's old friends stopped playing with them. Tim, a budding musician, had to miss the competition he had been training for, because a curfew was imposed on Japanese-Candians. Finally, like other Japanese-Canadians, the Kogawa family was forced to go to a "relocation" or "internment" camp. People had to leave behind their homes, their businesses, and almost all of their belongings. They were told these things would be held for them. But in fact, they were all sold or given away.
