Course Description
Note: Every Good and Evil course taught in Comparative Literature has a different focus. Please read the course description carefully.
This is an interdisciplinary course focusing specifically on issues of good and evil, east and west as they relate to the phenomenon of migration from Asian countries to the US. It draws on literature, film, anthropology, history, and cultural studies to examine the experiences of Asian/Asian Americans living in the US. The materials will cover the starting period of Asian immigration in the 19 th century, the anti-Asian movements, Asian Americans’ life during World War Two, the emergence of the Asian American movement in the 1960s, and the new wave of immigration after 1965. Through reading and viewing the selected novels, short stories, (auto) biography, motion pictures, and animation features, accompanied by critical essays, we will address problems such as racial stereotypes, media racism, multi-ethnic identity, “model minority”, etc. Furthermore, we will examine how an understanding of good and evil, east and west which connects specifically with immigrants from Asian countries changes in different historical and social contexts and how migration causes conflicts between cultures with distinct notions of good and evil.

Jessica Berman's Personal Library A listing of a general collection Submitted for the 1997-1998 Eda May Haskell Library Prize by Jessica Berman Edmunds Union My Collection: An Introduction Maintaining my own library has always been important to me. There are no writers in my family, but there are many readers. Books are always exchanged between family members for holidays and birthdays, providing the receiver with a new edition to his or her own personal library. My family is unable to travel anywhere unless every person has a bag full of books to occupy themselves with in the car, on the beach, or while resting beside a hiking trail. Growing up in an affluent suburb of Boston, I often saw things on the television and in the newspaper which I found hard to understand. Stories of violence and hate crimes inspired by racial conflict, of poverty in America's cities, or even optimistic stories of beautiful places in other nations, were all things which I was unable to experience from where I lived. Similarly, I was unable to take anything away from the history told in my high school textbooks besides dates and character-less names. While my friends and I could engage in discussions and experiences which helped to expand our understanding of human emotion and intellect, literature was the only thing which I found that was able to open the door to the rest of the world for me. I have begun the listing of my collection with my Literature section because of the important role which these novels, poems, plays, and biographies play in my continuing path of personal growth and discovery. There are a number of American Classics in this collection, many of which have been passed down to me from parents, uncles, aunts, and grandparents. What I feel is unique to my collection, however, is that I have been able to embellish it with additions outside of the main stream of American literature, to contain the voices of often unheard individuals. Many of these individuals are people of color, or people from other nations, whose stories I would never have learned from my suburban peers.

Daniels, Roger.
New York. Arno Press.
This book contains two separate, independently written accounts of the history of Japanese Canadians in Canada, specifically in British Columbia and Alberta. Both Ken Adachi and David Iwaasa, chronicle the experience by documenting events from the time of the earliest arrival, through the war years, to their present time(1958). Adachi deals with this history in BC, detailing the internment camps and POW camps, while Iwaasa presents the history in Alberta, focusing on the farm working camps. Both stress the importance of this history for future generations, and suggest that further studies in this area should be undertaken. Adachi, Ken. (1991).

APPENDIX
Documenting Sources All the sources used in your research project should be documented, i.e., you should acknowledge the authors of the ideas you borrow by clearly indicating the names of the authors and the details of the sources the ideas have been taken from. This holds good about quoting or paraphrasing, be it from a book or an article or an Internet web site. There are various documentation styles used in the academic community, however, we suggest that you use the MLA (Modern Language Association) style. You can use any recent MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, e.g. the one by Joseph Gibaldi, published in New York by The Modern Language Association of America in 1999 or consult the MLA web site ( http://www.mla.org/
You may wish to consult the brief guide at
http://www.wmich.edu/library/handouts/citations-mla.html

Note: in this brief guide the book/journal titles have been underlined . In the following examples the book titles are in italics . You can choose either underlining or italics but you should keep to one of them throughout your research project. Quotation marks are not used for book titles. References The list of works cited should be placed at the end of the research paper under the title References and should be begun on a new page. This is the full list of all the sources you have referred to in your research project and they should be arranged in the alphabetical order according to the author’s/editor’s surname. If the source does not have an author, the source is placed in the list according to its title. The list of works cited is also double-spaced. If an entry is longer than one line, indent the line(s) that follow by five spaces from the left margin.
