Yusef Komunyakaa
Pulitizer Prize winning poet, Yusef Komunyakaa, feels that his work has been influenced by other New Jersey poets, William Carlos Williams and Amiri Barka
, as well as by such poets as Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, Melvin Tolson, Sterling Brown, Helen Johnson, Margaret Walker, Countee Cullen, and Claude McKay. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, Komunyakaa has won two Creative Writing Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts (1981, 1987 and inclusion in such prestigious collections as the Norton Anthology of Southern Literature and The Oxford Companion to African American Literature. In 1999, he was named a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. A resident poet of New Jersey, Yusef Komunyakaa The Southern Cross , Dedications and Other Darkhorses , 1977, and Lost in the Bonewheel Factory
Komunyakaa went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts at the University of California at Irvine in 1980, and, in the same year, joined the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center where he met a community of artists. The poet felt that his stay at the center helped him to develop his own style and gain a deeper understanding of himself as a writer. He has said that " a sort of unearthing has to take place; sometimes one has to remove layers of facades and superficialities. The writer has to get down to the guts of the thing and rediscover the basic timbre of his or her existence." Since 1980, Yusef Komunyakaa has published eight additional volumes of poetry and co-edited two anthologies. His third collection

46. About Yusef Komunyakaa
About yusef komunyakaa yusef komunyakaa speaks in a gravely Southern baritone, tinged with a Cajun flavor that reflects his childhood years in Louisiana.
http://www.flagpole.com/Issues/03.15.00/komunyakaa.html
About Yusef Komunyakaa Yusef Komunyakaa, winner of the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for poetry, will give a reading from his works on Thursday, March 16, at 4:30 p.m. in room 265 of Park Hall on the University of Georgia campus. The reading is free and open to the public.
Komunyakaa began teaching in 1982 at the University of New Orleans. He also worked as a visiting poet in a public school system, teaching enthusiastic fourth and fifth graders that poetry "is a sharing of feelings and ideas." He met his future wife, Australian fiction writer Mandy Sayer in New Orleans. He was a professor of English at Indiana University until 1996, a visiting lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley and at Washington University in St. Louis before assuming his present position at Princeton University.
Yusef Komunyakaa speaks in a gravely Southern baritone, tinged with a Cajun flavor that reflects his childhood years in Louisiana. He is a man who chooses his words carefully, splicing his speech with long silences, until his conversation resembles something close to a jazz riff - very fitting for this acclaimed poet who says "oral language is our first music, and the body is an amplifier."
Music, more specifically radio music, playing from a waist-high, wooden radio in his mother's living room, was Komunyakaa's first link to the world outside his hometown of Bogalusa, Louisiana. Born in 1947, Komunyakaa grew to revere the radio, and it became a shrine for him: he would listen to Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington and Mahalia Jackson and feel a connection to something larger than the rituals of sports and hunting in his own rural town. The jazz and blues Komunyakaa heard as a child have gone on to inform much of his nine published books of poetry. Not afraid to confront complex moral issues, much of Komunyakaa's work embraces the duality of despair and hope, and music often provides the panacea. All kinds of musicians show up to play: Otis Redding, John Coltrane, Ray Charles, Charles Mingus and Thelonius Monk, to name a few. The result is a celebration of African-American heritage and culture.

ChickenBones: A Journal Home Interview with Pulitzer Prize-Winning Poet Yusef Komunyakaa New Orleans, May 1985 Part 1 Note: The interview below is seventeen years old, nine years before Yusef received his Pulitzer (the first African-American male to be so honored). I recently dug it out of boxes I have been lugging around from one residence to the next. At the time of the interview Yusef was a mentor and a friend. We worked then on a number of projects, including building a stage and a bar for a community center. We spent then a lot of time at Lee Grue's Poetry Forum and in discussions of writing, culture, and politics. I have not seen him since his marriage and his first trip to Australia, though I spoke to home on the phone and communicated to him by post when he reviewed my poetry manuscript and made suggestions. This interview was conducted in his house on Piety Street. Rudy: You’re working in the Poetry-in-the-School program now? Is this work you want to

"Oral language is our first music, and the body is an amplifier." Born in Bogalusa, Louisiana, YUSEF KOMUNYAKAA was the first African-American man to win a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. A Vietnam veteran who won the Bronze Star for his service as a correspondent and managing editor of a military newspaper, he did not write about the war until more than a decade after returning to the United States. He has published nine books of poetry, most recently Thieves of Paradise (1998), and the Pulitzer-winning volume Neon Vernacular is forthcoming. His poems are distinguished by their clear-minded aesthetics and social consciousness: the intricate music of language, often drawing on jazz, the blues, and the speech of his rural Southern childhood, clarifies his intense commitment to social justice and to an honest appraisal of lived experience. In 1999 Yusef Komunyakaa was elected a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. He lives in New York City and is professor of creative writing at Princeton University. 18 poems and an interview from The Cortland Review "Facing It" - from The Favorite Poem Project "May" ...
