I love telling stories with words and pictures. I'm often asked which of those two I like best and I have to say that they really are very similar. A sentence in a picture book may not be illustrated but it can paint an incredible picture in the mind of the reader. Illustrations in a book can tell wonderful stories that the manuscript never addresses. Marrying words and pictures to tell a story is one of the most satisfying things in the world to do and something nobody is too old to appreciate. When I go to schools I try to get to speak to older students whenever I can. I try to make them see how drawing can be broken down to the simplest of geometric shapes and how the simplest stories are the hardest to tell.

Maryann Kovalski
Maryann Kovalski was born in Bronx, New York, but was raised and now lives in Canada. She wrote books such as "The Wheels on the Bus". Maryann started working when she was young. She loves to draw and has a wild imagination. Maryann enjoys writing children's books. She also enjoys illustrating children's books.
Some books Maryann has written:
Brenda and Edward
The Wheels on the Bus
Jingle Bells
Pizza for Breakfast
The Wheels on the Bus
This book is about a grandmother and her two grandchildren who went shopping. When they were done shopping they went to the bus stop and while they were waiting they sang the wheels on the bus, while they were doing this they missed the bus so they took a taxi.
As a child Maryann enjoyed sneaking of to the library and read many books , then her brothers would chase after her and look for her to tell her that she was in trouble. Even when Maryann was a child, she had known the she wanted to become an artist or an author because she loved to write and draw. When Maryann attended art school she soon learned that illustrators were the people who drew pictures for magazines, newspapers and picture books. Soon after she graduated, she moved to Canada and was approached by Kids Can Press to do her very first book for kids, after that there was no stopping her. Maryann tells children not to worry about becoming a perfessional. She tells them to "Savour this time of your life when you can draw what you like and not worry about getting praise or criticism".

Bibliography
"As an illustrator, I sometimes feel like I'm directing little movies I'm totally interpreting the story. If you've got a lousy story, an illustrator can't save it, but if it's a good story, the illustration can really make it sing." (Maryann Kovalski quoted in "The Art of the Children's Book Illustrator: Eight Leading Artists Talk about their Work", , volume 51, no. 10, October 1985. Toronto: Key Publishers, 1985. P. 10.) Once upon a time there was a little girl who lived in the Bronx (New York) who loved to draw. That little girl was Maryann Kovalski and, from a very young age, she found comfort and cheer in her artwork. Although her family had no background in art, they encouraged Maryann to follow her dream. She "doodled" her way through school, went to the New York School of Visual Arts, and moved to Montreal to immerse herself in its vibrant arts community. Reality didn't meet expectations and Maryann found herself creating advertising copy, designing logos, working on cartoon strips, and falling in love. Soon after her marriage, she and her husband moved to Toronto where the family, which includes two young daughters, now make their home. Professionally, Maryann devotes most of her time to writing and illustrating children's books. Her talent for highlighting everyday events and pinpointing human foibles, lovingly and honestly, engages readers from the beginning of her books to the end.

"I want to see everythingl" says little Jenny on a visit to New York City with her grandmother. Here is another delightful book from Maryann Kovalski, this time featuring the grandmother and two little girls on a flying visit to New York City. When last seen, the trio were belting out the popular children's song in The Wheels on the Bus Written for children aged three and up, the book includes the word and music to the traditional song "Jingle Bells." The full-page illustrations show the girls getting ready for an exciting plane trip to a big city. On arrival they decide to take a hansom cab ride to the park. The authentic paintings radiate life and exuberance. The author cast her mind back to the scenes of her childhood in New York City. Her double-page spread of a city square is beautifully done. How the resourceful and energetic grandmother saves them from peril when the cab driver is swept away by a tree branch is an exciting episode in this vintage Kovalski book - humorous, lively nostalgic and a pleasure for adults to share with children.

A book is a conversation between the viewer and the creator. Only the one who made the marks and the one looking at them can hear it.
Even though the talk is quiet, it's there every time the person looking feels a jolt and thinks, I've felt that. I've seen that. Or even, I wish I could go there. Sometimes the person looking feels the urge to make their own marks on paper, with words or pictures.
And when that happens, the talk has been magic. My art representative is Harriet Kasak www.hkportfolio.com

19. Maryann Kovlaski's Keynotes And Visits
maryannkovalski@on.aibn.com. Keynote Addresses. D. Director, Mazza Institute, Universityof Findlay, Findlay, Ohio. maryann kovalski is a delightful speaker.
http://maryannkovalski.com/visits.html
My art representative is Harriet Kasak www.hkportfolio.com Readings I have performed hundreds of readings for children in schools and libraries across Canada and the United States. Those years of experience have taught me as much as I have taught, particularly in finding the most successful way to explain how I draw. A visit is 45-60 minutes, depending on the age group. I open the session with a reading of one or two of my published books. Then I go back in time; I show an original illustration. The students are usually impressed, certain that they could never produce such accomplished art. Then I present the polished roughs (pencil drawings) and they are still in awe. Then I show the badly done drawings that would normally get tossed out and the sketch book where the ideas start. It's then that they comprehend how accessible the entire process becomes when they see the steps an illustrator goes through. From there I demonstrate the process I use in my drawing, using geometric shapes. When one can master the five geometric forms (circle, square, rectangle, triangle and cylinder) one can understand perspective and can draw virtually anything. This is a delight for teachers who are using the geometric shapes in math. The purpose of my visit is to de-mystify drawing (and writing) and to open the students eyes to seeing in a new way.
