Nancy Kress:Beggars In Spain
How many times have you thought to yourself, "I could get so much more done if only I didn't have to sleep"? In Beggars In Spain , genetic manipulation has made it possible to make this adjustment in unborn children, removing the need to sleep and any detrimental effects of prolonged wakefulness; in addition, they become virtually immortal. The Sleepless soon get a tremendous advantage over their Sleeper competitors, and prejudice begins to spring up. The book focuses mostly on Leisha Camden, one of the first Sleepless. She is born with a twin sister Alice who, unmodified and unplanned-for, is a mere Sleeper. She becomes one of the few Sleepless who does not retreat into the haven of Sanctuary, and remains in occasional contact with Sleeper society. The recurring theme of the book asks the question, "How much do the more capable owe the less capable?" The majority of Sleepless decide that they owe nothing to the Sleepers who are capable of so much less; Leisha, who disagrees, remains with the "Beggars". The subrace of Supers, an even more intelligent engineered offshoot of the Sleepless, begin to disagree with the rest of the Sleepless. Everything comes to a head when Sanctuary, an orbiting satellite, declares itself independent from the United States...

Interview: Nancy Kress by John C. Snider After twelve years, Nancy Kress returns to the far future and far space. Her new book Probability Moon (out in July 2000) takes us to deep space, with high adventure and a mysterious alien artifact. And most exciting of all, this book is the first of a proposed Probability trilogy! Nancy is best known for her Earth-based near-future Beggars series, in which she envisions a world divided between the Sleepless (genetically altered humans who require no sleep) and the Sleepers (the rest of humanity). Nancy Kress
The death and rebirth of a civilization
provide a powerful conclusion to the Beggars Trilogy
Nancy Kress's Beggars Trilogy is one of the great SF works of the decade. It chronicles the rise of the genetically-altered Sleepless, a new breed of superintelligent humans, and their radical effect on civilization in the 21st century. "Real characters, complex scientific ideas, and a thought-provoking story with fascinating and troubling implications. I highly recommend Beggars in Spain
    - CONNIE WILLIS, AUTHOR OF THE HUGO-WINNING DOOMSDAY BOOK
Beggars and Choosers added new richness and depth to the trilogy. "With Beggars and Choosers Nancy Kress's position as one of our most important SF writers is assured. Kress uses elegant, eloquent prose, wonderful and believable characters, and fascinating speculation to come to grips with some of the most important and troubling questions of the late twentieth century and manages to tell a gripping story at the same time."
    - LISA GOLDSTEIN, AUTHOR OF THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD-WINNING

Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress reviewed by XXXX
Original appearance: Albedo one issue , date?
The novella on which this novel is based, or from which it was expanded, won both the Hugo and the Nebula awards in 1991. Awards are great for sales and SF publishers love to slap Hugo and Nebula claims all over the covers of novels, where possible. Of course, the fact that the cover says Hugo or Nebula winner, or both as this one does, is not always a guarantee that the book in question has won such awards. Often you will discover that the awards were received by the author for other work. At least in this case the other work had the same title, premise and some of the same storyline. What the novel does have, by definition, is more words.
Now I've got nothing against awards, nor do I begrudge publishers their right to use them to sell a few extra copies of a particular book (or a lot of extra copies), but I have always felt that Hugo and Nebula winners are not always the most readable of books. I was personally never enamoured of Roger Zelazny's Lords of Light or Brunner's Stand on Zanzibar and, frankly, I couldn't get much further than forty pages into either LeGuin's The Dispossessed or Asimov's The Gods Themselves. So, ignore the reflected glories of Hugos and Nebulas and judge BEGGARS IN SPAIN on its own merits.
To make such judgement necessitates the purchase of the book and before going any further I have to state that I recommend it without reservation. The premise of the novel is original, the characters are beautifully realised and the future which Nancy Kress has created is both terrible and terribly believable.

"Character Is Plot"
By Alex von Thorn
I interviewed writer Nancy Kress SFRevu.com Can you talk about how living in Western New York State affected your writing? I didn't start writing until I moved to Rochester, so I'm not sure that living in Western New York made a difference. Except to say: We lived way out in the country, when I was married to my first husband and I was pregnant with my second child. We only had one car, and he took it to work during the day. And I was out there with a toddler, and pregnant, alone way out in the country, no other women around during the day and I was going quietly nuts, and then that's when I started writing. It was either that or watch soap operas, and there are just things to which we do not descend. So, I think you could say that the geography contributed. Why do you write? Would you say your goal is to make a living, entertain an audience, or something else? I write because that's the way I explore reality. I started writing because, as I said, I was going nuts, and it was a distraction. I've always read. Every writer I've ever met, read. I'd always told myself stories, but I never thought I'd write any down. All writers I'd ever read were dead, as far as I knew when I was a kid. It hadn't occurred to me to actually be a writer, but when I started, it progressed beyond distraction to a way to explore things that interest me, characters or ideas. Because of that, I never know the end of the story when I begin to write it, even for an entire novel, never mind a short story. Because I'm working it out, seeing where the issues take me, or where they take themselves, ideally.

Four stories bring together monster-movie archetypes as you've never encountered them before. The rage of a tormented adolescent is poignantly expressed in "Boobs." A vampire's sessions with a psychiatrist become a contest of wills in "Unicorn Tapestry." Dark magic puts a woman's ugly insecurities on public display in "Evil Thoughts." And a beautiful woman exerts an uneasy control over the temper of a monster in the critically acclaimed "Beauty and the Opera or The Phantom Beast." Suspenseful and thought-provoking, these stories affirm the vitality of these classic demons of our cultural imagination.
