Reviewed in University of Toronto Quarterly by PETER SINNEMA

Interestingly, The Old Dualities is at its best when it engages in close readings of the novels, especially in the eighth and ninth chapters. These sections argue convincingly that Kroetsch's hyper-masculine literature invariably posits Woman as the repressed or domesticated Other, contradistinct from the male hero. Submission is required of even the most formidable female characters in the fiction of a writer who claims to be in sympathy with feminist theory and politics. What we discover, as Tiefensee adroitly notes, is `the immortal woman whom the questing male negates and subsumes on his way to becoming the immortal Hero.' Whether it is in the Notikeewin trilogy (The Studhorse Man, What the Crow Said, Gone Indian) or in the later Badlands - a novel Kroetsch heralded as a text upsetting male supremacy - women are recognized only in the roles they assume in relation to men.

Backlist Robert Kroetsch The Ledger The Ledger is a foundational book-length poem in the Field Notes series that Canada's top literary bullshitter has now declared Completed . Be that as it may, The Ledger has been in continuous demand since its first publication in 1972. This documentary long poem about pioneering in Bruce County, Ontario makes the debit-credit form of accounting into a force-field that holds the pros and cons of settling a new country. If you begin these pages wondering what makes them poetry, feel free to shuck the term. Robert Kroetsch's poetry generously offers a reader enough space to become a writer.
