A Chicago native, Sward was educated at the University of Illinois (BA, 1956), Middlebury College, and the University of Iowa (MA, 1958). After graduating from the Iowa Writers' Program, Sward spent a year in England on a Fulbright Fellowship and upon his return joined the English Department at Cornell University. While he was at Cornell, Sward's collegues included the poet, A.R. Ammons, who helped promote Sward's poetry. It was Cornell University Press, in fact, that brought Sward's work to the attention of the academic community by publishing his two early collections, Kissing the Dancer and Other Poems (1964) and Thousand Year Old Fiancee and Other Poems (1965). Another poet who helped promote Sward's work was William Meredith. He wrote the introduction to

Kroetsch's contribution to Canadian literature includes fiction, non-fiction and poetry. His first novel, But We Are Exiles was published in 1965, and in 1969 his novel The Studhorse Man won the Governor General's Award for Fiction. His most recent book is the long poem The Hornbooks of Rita K. He lives in Winnipeg. paulo da costa Station spoke with Robert Kroetsch during his Markin-Flanagan's 2002 Distinguished Visiting Writer Residency at the University of Calgary. IMAGINING ALBERTA Robert Kroetsch: I grew up in rural central Alberta on a big farm. It was before the Second World War. This farm was independent: you grew a lot of your own food and exchanged labour with your neighbours. It was not yet a totally cash economy. It was a community-oriented thing. paulo da costa: What was the impact of those formative years on you as a writer?

Home Contact Us The Hornbooks of Rita K Enthusiastic reviews of the poetry in The Hornbooks of Rita K Kroetsch has received many formal tributes over the years. The most recent was the nomination of The Hornbooks of Rita K for the Governor General's Award for Poetry in 2001. The nomination is nicely paired with his Governor General's Award for Fiction for The Studhorse Man These serious awards are complemented by tributes from writers and colleagues. After all, Kroetsch is known for his humour, playfulness, and wit. So it was no surprise to learn that he invited an engaging graduate student to deliver a "lecture" on the work of Rita Kleinhart (Rita K) during the Calgary launch of The Hornbooks of Rita K . Jay Gamble gave a clever parody that had the crowd in stitches. "It takes cheekiness to out-Kroetsch Kroetsch," one audience member noted. Related Link The University of Alberta Press

Course Description
This course examines a prominent—yet largely critically neglected—Canadian literary genre: the long poem. From Oliver Goldsmith’s early 19 th Century depiction of Maritime colonial life and traditions in The Rising Village to Robert Kroetsch’s late 20 th Century exploration of Prairie experience in Field Notes and Stephen Scobie’s “speculative biography” of Bob Dylan in And Forget My Name , the Canadian long poem has been a resilient and challenging genre. Key questions to be raised in this course will be why the long (or narrative) poem or poem sequence seems to be somewhat over-represented in Canadian literary history and why literary critics have had difficulties categorizing the long poem generically. The representative Canadian narrative poems on the course reading list are meant to help students place the long poem in a Canadian historical context (both literary history and social/political history). The focus, however, will be on the close reading, analysis and interpretation of the texts themselves.
Course Objectives By the course conclusion, the student will

Robert Kroetsch
The Man from the Creeks
I don't often get nervous before interviews, but I did before speaking with Robert Kroetsch. The man is not only one of the giants of Canadian literature, but also a personal hero. A Governor General's Award winner for his seminal novel The Studhorse Man, Kroetsch is also a cutting edge poet whose work - Seed Catalogue and Field Notes - helped define contemporary Canadian poetry. What if the interview tanks? What if he hates my questions and I don't get anything useful out of the interview? I fret. I shouldn't have bothered worrying. Kroetsch is as personable and witty in person as his prose is engaging and the words and the stories flow between us as we hit it off like two old sourdoughs sharing the same mountain trail. That last lame metaphor is in honor of Kroetsch's latest novel, The Man from the Creeks, a rollicking historical novel, set in 1898 during the height of the Klondike Gold Rush and lovingly based on the characters out of Robert Service's poetry (the poet who'd "spoken the most clearly about the North"). Part adventure novel, part love story, this novel is a bit of a departure for Kroetsch.

Department of Cultural Studies EN3017 - CONTEMPORARY CANADIAN FICTION
Single Module Tutor
Daniel Lamont Aims and Objectives To enable students to study and gain insight into recent developments in contemporary Canadian Fiction - both the novel and the short story - through close study of selected key works. To enable students to explore the cultural contexts from which the texts emerge, and learn to employ a range of critical perspectives and theoretical approaches. Syllabus The module will explore developments in the Canadian Novel since 1970 by examining in detail key works by a group of major Canadian writers. Representative novels or short story collections by such writers as Margaret Laurence, Robertson Davies, Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje and Robert Kroetsch will be considered in the light of both recent developments and interest in the form of the short story genres and also specifically in the context of the writers' work as a whole. Given its significance, there will be a detailed consideration of the short story, making use of such anthologies as The Oxford Book of Canadian Short Stories in English or collection by a single writer such as Alice Munro's The Progress of Love . There will be some consideration of the historical and cultural context of the writing in order to introduce students to that which is inherently Canadian as well as to more wide-ranging aspects of the theme and form of the fiction. In this connection, there will be some consideration of such issues as feminism, Post-Modernism and Post-Colonialism, bearing in mind that Canada has to define itself against the USA as well as Europe. Where appropriate, attention will be paid to texts from before 1970 for the purposes of clarification and comparison.

Design Citations for Canadian Publications of 1998
FOR THIS THE SOCIETY'S seventeenth annual presentation of design awards the panel of four judges spent Saturday, May 1st examining some 225 books published in Canada during 1998, each entered into competition by its Canadian publisher or designer. This was a decrease in numbers from the previous year's competition, down some 150 entries from the 375 submitted last year. The judges and organizers are at a loss to explain this drop in numbers. Have increasingly hard times hit the Canadian publishing industry? Or has the Alcuin Society done a poor job in publicizing the competition? If anyone out there has any suggestions please contact us with your ideas. Whatever the answer we are not resting on our laurels. Thanks to a generous donation by Dr. Yosef Wosk the Design Committee has been able to make several significant improvements to the competition during 1999. These include:
  • strengthening the Design Committee by including more representatives from the Canadian publishing and design communities;
