Krutch's association with Columbia started in 1915. Soon after arriving to undertake graduate studies in English, he befriended his classmate Van Doren, whose brother Carl was already a faculty member of that department. Carl Van Doren '11GSAS became Krutch's master's thesis supervisor, and Mark, upon receiving his Ph.D. in 1920, joined the faculty at about the same time that Carl added to his Columbia duties the position of literary editor of The Nation magazine. Carl reduced his Columbia teaching to part-time and hired Mark to work on the editorial board of The Nation . This Columbia family added both men's wives to the The Nation editorial board as well and recruited another Columbia graduate, Ludwig Lewisohn '03GSAS, as drama critic in 1919. When Lewisohn resigned in 1924, the board added Krutch to their editorial staff; one of his duties was to take Lewisohn's place as drama critic. That was in the same year that Krutch received his own Ph.D. and had his dissertation published as Comedy and Conscience After the Restoration The Nation played no small part in that enterprise. Therefore, when the department acted on President Butler's suggestion and appointed Krutch, he diligently maintained his connection with

Prominent Alumni: Part III
Prominent Alumni: Part III In 1950 the American Book Publishers Council, the American Booksellers Association, and the Book Manufacturers Institute established the National Book Award to honor outstanding works of literature by American citizens published in the United States during the preceding calendar year. Initially, a volunteer committee chosen from the publishing industry selected the award winners; from 1960 to 1974, the National Book Committee, Inc., a non-profit group of citizens interested in books chose the recipients. Beginning in 1976, the award came under the direction of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Presently, the award carries a $10,000 prize for fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Two UTK alumni have received National Book Awards, the book publishing industry's major prize. Joseph Wood Krutch 's The Measure of Man: On Freedom, Human Values, Survival, and the Modern Temper won the award for nonfiction in 1955, and All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy received the 1992 prize for fiction.

The Joseph Wood Krutch Cactus Garden This cactus garden, was initially on the west side of Old Main in 1917, then moved to the east side in the 1930s. The present garden is a remnant of a larger cactus garden that once extended from Old Main to Cherry Ave. The renovations that turned this area into the Mall as we know it today took place in the 1960's. The garden surrounding Old Main is also a remnant of this formerly very extensive garden. Although less conducive to sun-bathing than the grassy Mall, the cactus garden was certainly more interesting. Old photos show pathways, cacti in bloom, and visitors reading labels on many species. From the many interesting plants in the Krutch Garden, we have selected to present the following species.

They landed in the water, and then piloted up to the beach so they could have shade under the wing. They visited many of the islands, starting from Consag, north of , and ending in , east of the Bay of La Paz. It was a wonderful and memorable trip. Later, Lindbergh called the American ambassador and asked him to organize a press conference for representatives from the Mexican media.
