Software Author Information I have to admit that I had more than a bit of a problem with Katherine Kurtz' "Camber" fantasy series. I didn't care for the "what they don't know can't hurt us" and "the end justifies the means" theories she seemed to espouse. The series, however, co-written with Deborah Turner Harris gets full marks from me for escapism. I've been told that the local descriptions are off, but that isn't as important to me as the great "story" involved. Adam Sinclair is "nobility, child psychiatrist, and guardian". The books propose a kind of magic we could all wish was real, and the dedication of a group devoted to fighting evil. As pure escapism, there is enough action to keep your interest, and a cast of characters worthy of concern. That it purports to take place in Scotland, is icing on the cake for me. While they aren't "thrillers" as such, they will keep your interest and fire your imagination. I always look forward to more in the Adept series.

Vampyr-Ss Introduction Kurtz has an incredibly strong grounding in both general history and in the Christian religion- especially its more occult aspects. Most of her novels make use of this knowledge. She writes from different points of view and includes some violence, but her books are not uncomfortable to read in the psychological sense. They are more sociological and political in orientation. Most of her novels move smoothly through the action, and she almost never spends inordinate amounts of time on rituals or other researched material. She simply incorporates them and moves on. Her characters are also quite sympathetic despite (or perhaps because of) their weaknesses and conflicts. Overall, Kurtz is a fairly good writer. Gwynnedd Kurtz is the author of the Deryni series, a a sequence of trilogies in the same world built around two different time periods. The premise is that a medieval Europe-style world is centered around a few strong nations, including Gwynned. Most of the countries are apparently Catholic. The one major change from medieval Europe (beside the geopgraphy and history) is that there is an additional race of humans with inheritable psi powers. This race is known as "Deryni".

Katherine Kurtz was born in Coral Gables, Florida during a hurricane, and likes to think this was an auspicious introduction to the world. She read honours humanities at the University of Miami, from which she received a B.S. in chemistry, and attended medical school for a year before deciding she would rather write about medicine than practice it. She completed an M.A. in medieval English history at UCLA while writing her first two novels and working as an instructional designer for the Los Angeles Police Academy, and continued her police work for the next ten years. She is also a professionally trained hypnotist, a student of comparative religion, a passable authority on heraldry and chivalry (she belongs to several modern-day chivalric orders, and her husband has just been appointed a state herald for Ireland), a virtuoso at counted cross-stitch (in her copious spare time), and an avowed cat person. Besides the Deryni, Camber, King Kelson, and Heirs of Saint Camber Trilogies (and a collection of short stories set in the Deryni universe, plus a book on Deryni magic), she has written a juvenile science fiction novel, Legacy of Lehr: a World War II thriller, Lammas Night, dealing with magic worked in the summer of 1940 to keep Hitler from invading England; and an alternate history of the American War for Independence called Two Crowns For America. A new Deryni novel is nearing completion (King Kelson's Bride), with at least two more trilogies projected for the future.

Katherine Kurtz, Deryni Tales (Ace Books, 2002) A large and dedicated following has developed around Katherine Kurtz's Deryni novels: books set in an alternate world modeled on Europe of the high Middle Ages. The Deryni are a subset of the human race endowed with inherited magical abilities that inspire envy and hatred in normal humans. Kurtz's fans have been writing fan fiction since the first Deryni novel ( Deryni Rising ) was published in 1970. Kurtz encourages this; she sees fan fiction as "a vehicle of growth that might even make a real contribution to the betterment of the reader's mind-set." Since 1978, Kurtz has published Deryni Archives: The Magazine as a platform for readers to contribute to the Deryni canon. Deryni Tales is the second collection of Deryni-themed short stories. The first collection, Deryni Archives , was published in 1987 and was entirely written by Kurtz. With Deryni Tales , she showcases some of the writers whose work has appeared in Deryni Archives: The Magazine Deryni Tales proves the value of Kurtz's long-time encouragement of her fans' work. The stories are uniformly well-written, with perspectives different from Kurtz's while remaining consistent with the overall Deryni mythos. Kurtz also includes a new story of her own, "The Green Tower," that serves as something of a prequel to her forthcoming Deryni novel.
