Michael Arvaarluk Kusugak and Robert Munsch We have been reading these two books by Robert Munsch and Michael Arvaarluk Kusaugak. Together the authors have written and illustrated two wonderful books about life in the Arctic. The first book Hide and Sneak, written by Michael Arvaarluk Kusaugak and illustrated by Vladyana Krykorka, is a legend about inukshuks and how they came to be. We really enjoyed making our own inukshuks and building a giant one out of Styrofoam! The second book, a promise is a promise is written by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Vladyana Krykorka. It is a book about the Inuit legend of the Qallupilluq. The Qallupilluq is an imaginary Inuit creature that lives in the Hudson Bay. The traditional tale tells a story about how the Qallupilluq grabs children when they come too near cracks in the ice! We have been looking at mythical creatures from all over the world including the Loch ness monster, Bigfoot, the Yeti, the Abominable Snowman, and even Ogopogo. We have written some amazing mythical stories about some of these creatures and even some new ones! Click below to read some of our stories! Check back here soon to see some of our great stories!

Michael Arvaarluk Kusugak
Arvaarluk's inspiration comes from the storytelling tradition of his family. As a young boy living in Repulse Bay, he spent time travelling by dog‚team, living in igloos and sod huts. He went to sleep to the stories and legends shared by the family at night. His early education was at boarding school where he was away from his family for a whole year. The next year, when the plane came to return the students to school, he hid away and missed the flight which allowed him to play hooky until the next school year began. Today Michael Arvaarluk Kusugak lives in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, (NWT) where he writes in a large shed next door to his home. His first book, A Promise is a Promise , was a collaboration with Robert Munsch who had heard his stories and encouraged him to write them down. His book Northern Lights: The Soccer Trails won the 1994 Ruth Schwartz Children's Book Award. On his tours across the country he writes, tells stories and plays string games to entertain his audiences.

Michael Kusugak grew up in Repulse Bay, a small village in the Northwest Territories. “I’ve always been close to the land, the sea and the animals,” he says. “I want to teach everything I know about how to live here, and write about everything kids like to do.” During his childhood, Michael’s family traveled by dog team; they lived in igloos in the winter and tents in the summer. He had no access to books as a child, and didn't speak a word of English until he was seven. “Every night, my grandma would tell us a story to put us to sleep,” he recalls. In 1954, a float plane whisked Michael off to a residential school in Chesterfield Inlet. “When you're seven years old and hauled away from your parents, it's very hard. I cried the whole year I was there—that’s all I remember. The following fall, when the airplane came again, I went and hid in the hills. I didn't go to school that year.” Michael went on to become one of the first Inuit from the eastern Arctic to graduate from high school, piecing together his education in Rankin Inlet, Yellowknife, Churchill and Saskatoon. While in school, Michael enjoyed writing stories and poems, but he never thought of becoming an author until he met Robert Munsch. “He stayed with us during Children’s Book Week once, and I told him all kinds of legends. He suggested that I write them down, so we worked on one together, and eventually it was published!” That story

MICHAEL ARVAARLUK KUSUGAK is an Inuit author and storyteller who first become well known for A Promise is a Promise, co-written with Robert Munsch. In this videotape, he presents three stories "Hide and Seek," "Baseball Bats for Christmas," and "Northern Lights: The Soccer Trails." Kusugak includes personal anecdotes of living in the Canadian arctic and incorporates traditional spirit creatures into his stories of modern life. Kusugak is a natural storyteller who has an easy rapport with audiences. His stories and style are equally appropriate for primary children and senior students. His manner and stories will expand understanding of the Inuit beyond stereotypes of igloos, nose-rubbing, and whale blubber. "Hide and Seek" tells of Allashu, a child who likes to observe insects and fish. "Baseball Bats for Christmas" is Kusugak's own memory of a time when a bush pilot, the only link to the outside world, arrived at Christmas with baseball bats. "Northern Lights: The Soccer Trails" tells the story of Kataujaq, a girl, and her relationship with her mother. The accompanying twelve-page teacher's guide provides a brief biography of the author. It also includes a book list, a vocabulary list, and suggested activities for each story.

Review by Naomi Gerrard. excerpt:
"esker - a long, narrow ridge of gravel that was formed by a retreating glacier." Michael Arvaarluk Kusugak draws on his Inuit experiences to weave a fascinating tale introducing us to the daily life of Repulse Bay in the Arctic. A counting book, we meet and count some of the animals Kusugak and his family watch in the Arctic. The illustrations add a wealth of information about the habitat, the inhabitants, and the colours of the region. excerpt: "One polar bear walks along the huge floe edge on the Hudson Bay. What do they hunt? Seals... Two ringed seals are sunning themselves on the sea ice during the long spring day. Ten lemmings scurry among the dwarf willows.
A pack of twenty wolves catch a scent in the air..........
