A mathematician whose research involves a type of chess played with variable rules ("fairy chess") is the only one able to solve an "equation from the future" in which the constants are treated as variables that the "bad guys" are going to use to win World War III. Apparently, the fact that the equation involves lots of variables is supposed to be able to drive most mathematicians crazy. Sounds pretty unrealistic to me, but I must admit that I have not seen nor read this novel. If you have, please write in with more information! Title: Mimsy Were the Borogoves
Author: Lewis Padgett (aka Henry Kuttner and Catherine L. Moore)
Year: 1943
Far in the future, humans have not only improved their digestive tracts (eliminating the appendix and shortening their large intestine), they have not only invented a time machine, but they have also invented educational toys which guide their children to learn abstract mathematics (non-Euclidean geometries and algebras in which 2+2 is not four). Two boxes of such toys, in fact, are sent back in time and have a dramatic effect on the kids that find them. The math here is certainly important to the story, though it is not discussed very convincingly. The psychologist who figures out what is going on confuses logic, arithmetic, and geometry for instance when he suggests a "non-Euclidean geometry" in which "two and two needn't equal four". But this story is fun to read and the idea that learning alternative mathematical structures (other than the arithmetic of the real numbers and Euclidean geometry) could expand one's mind and abilities is probably true and a nice advertisement for mathematics. This story originally appeared in Astounding Science-Fiction in 1943. It has been reprinted in

Fabrice Lhomme

"Have some goulash" said E. Hoffman Price. E. stands for Edgar. "Yrs" he said. "Remember 'The Sultan's Jest'? That was my first yarn. Or maybe it was 'Apricots from Ipsaham'. I don't remember." "I love goulash" I said. "How about 'The Stranger from Kurdistan'?" This is perhaps Price's most famous yarn, which ran in Weird Tales back in 1926 or 1927. "You're not writing weird fiction now?" "No" he observed. "Can't afford to. Adventure is much more profitable. Some more goulash?" He works very quickly, averaging about 2 cigarets a pg. In fact, he knockt out a 9,000 word yarn in one day while I was there. Smith has a cat, which eats rats when it can find any. But after hearing it make a number of unpleasant personal observations in a squeaky but undeniably human tone, I studiously avoided it. Henry Kuttner

[#6008, $19.95 ISBN 1-56882-045-3] The author, Henry Kuttner (1914-1958) was a friend of young Robert Bloch and a promising writer in his own right. They shared the same markets, including Weird Tales and Strange Stories. They even collaborated on a few stories, and both shared a friendship with the Great Old One, er, Grand Old Man, H.P. Lovecraft. Kuttner soon became one of the Lovecraft Circle, submitting plot ideas and draft manuscripts to Lovecraft. Eventually Henry Kuttner matured into a fine writer of fantasy and science fiction, for which he is best known. He had, however, an important impact on the development of both the Cthulhu Mythos and on the development of other writers who would eventually become better known. Ray Bradbury refers to Kuttner as "A Neglected Master" in his memoir of his friend and mentor, in The Best of Henry Kuttner.

First off, I'll have to ask you to forgive the silly title; Robots Have No Tails Gallegher Plus, Now, I am less easily amused than a lot of writers and readers seem to be by anecdotes of heavy drinking, drunken pratfalls and misadventures, and the happy liver-poisoning drunkards themselves. So for me to enjoy multiple readings of the Gallegher stories over the years, Henry Kuttner must have done a fine job of writing. At the moment he was nursing a hangover. A disjointed, lanky, vaguely boneless man with a lock of dark hair falling untidily over his forehead, he lay on the couch in the lab and manipulated his mechanical liquor bar. A very dry martini drizzled slowly from the spigot into his receptive mouth. He was trying to remember something, but not trying too hard. It had to do with the robot, of course. Well, it didn't matter. "Hey, Joe," Gallegher said.
