Kyd, Thomas
(baptized Nov. 6, 1558, London, Eng.d. c. December 1594, London), English dramatist who, with his The Spanish Tragedie (sometimes called Hieronimo, or Jeronimo, after its protagonist), initiated the revenge tragedy of his day. Kyd anticipated the structure of many later plays, including the development of middle and final climaxes. In addition, he revealed an instinctive sense of tragic situation, while his characterization of Hieronimo in The Spanish Tragedie prepared the way for Shakespeare's psychological study of Hamlet. The son of a scrivener, Kyd was educated at the Merchant Taylors School in London. There is no evidence that he attended the university before turning to literature. He seems to have been in service for some years with a lord (possibly Ferdinando, Lord Strange, the patron of Lord Strange's Men The Spanish Tragedie was entered in the Stationers' Register in October 1592, and the undated first quarto edition almost certainly appeared in that year. It is not known which company first played it, nor when; but Strange's company played Hieronimo 16 times in 1592, and the

Kyd, Thomas 1558-94, English dramatist, b. London. The son of a scrivener, he evidently followed his father's profession for a few years. In the 1580s he began writing plays. His literary fame rests on The Spanish Tragedy The Spanish Tragedy is notable for its exciting action, splendid rhetoric, and complex delineation of character. Kyd is believed by some scholars to be the author of an earlier version of Hamlet, which Shakespeare used as the basis of his play. In 1593, Kyd was accused of holding unorthodox religious and moral views; he was arrested and subjected to torture. Although he extricated himself by implicating his friend Christopher Marlowe, his reputation was severely marred, and he died in poverty the following year. See studies by A. Freeman (1967) and C. L. Kyd, Thomas
Elizabethan playwright whose Spanish Tragedy was apparently the most popular dramatic work of its time. It is a perfect example of that beloved Elizabethan form, the "revenge tragedy," which exerted a considerable influence on Gothic narrative and on the portrayals of Gothic villains. Its inclusion of a ghost doesn't hurt, either.

[BINDING]; KYD, Thomas [?] The Tragedie of Solimon and Perseda Edward Allde for Edward White [but Smeeton], London 1599 8vo., bound by Douglas Cockerell in crushed rust morocco with plain sides, spine with five raised bands carried onto both boards with blind decoration, title in gilt on the spine and upper cover, inner dentelles gilt, signed on the lower rear turn-in: 19DC02. This highly convincing facsimile printed by Smeeton looks so much like an early edition, that with the removal of all indications of its nineteenth century origin (by a previous owner), it might easily pass for the 1599 edition after which it is modelled. The work is generally creditied to Kyd, author of The Spanish Tragedy (1594). In this handsome Douglas Cockerell binding it is very appealing. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Bernard J. Shapero Rare Books ; click here for further details.

THOMAS KYD This biography was originally published in Elizabethan and Stuart Plays . Ed. Charles Read Baskerville. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1934. pp. 421-422. Purchase Plays by Thomas Kyd Thomas Kyd was born in London in 1558, the son of Francis Kyd, a scrivener. He was
educated at the Merchant Tailors' School, of which Richard Mulcaster, was head master. Probably he followed his father's calling for a while, but little or nothing more is known of him until he reached his thirties. He seems to have had some acquaintance with French, Italian, Spanish, and Latin, and to have done hack work in translating and in pamphleteering. Certainly with his Spanish Tragedy at least, he had a part in the outburst of popular tragedy around 1590. It has been supposed that he afterward capitalized on the popularity of this play by writing what might be called a first part, though the extant First Part of Jeronimo (printed in 1605) is probably by another hand.

Home Ancient Theatre Medieval Theatre 16th Century ... Email Us THOMAS KYD (1558-1595) U NTIL the last decade of the 19th century practically nothing was known about the life of the Elizabethan dramatist, Thomas Kyd. Although his famous Spanish Tragedy , produced about 1587, enjoyed immense popularity on the stage all through Elizabeth's reign and through the succeeding reigns of James I and Charles I, not even his name was known in connection with it until 1773. At that time it was accidentally discovered in a treatise written by Thomas Heywood in which reference was made to the Spanish Tragedy , or Hieronimo as it was more generally called by Kyd's contemporaries. Thomas Kyd, we have learned, was the son of a London scrivener. What formal education he received probably was had at the Merchant Taylor's School where he acquired at least a smattering of Latin, French, Italian and Spanish. He seems to have been included in the Mermaid Tavern group although he appears not to have been the equal of most of them either in birth or education. About the time of the production of the Spanish Tragedy , or shortly after, Kyd evidently came into a fairly close association with Marlowe . From 1590 to 1593 both dramatists were in the service of the same "noble lord." This contact had unfortunate results for Kyd. Some of his papers were seized in Marlowe's rooms when the government was preparing to arrest that gentleman on a charge of heresy. On the strength of this Kyd's lodging was searched and Kyd himself imprisoned and tortured. When, after the death of Marlowe, he was released, he could never regain his former place in the world and died in poverty shortly afterwards.

    40. Thomas Kyd And The Spanish Tragedy
thomas kyd and The Spanish Tragedy. Biography. Early Life. kyd, thomas. TheSpanish Tragedy. JR Mulryne, ed. New Mermaids. New York WW Norton, 1989.
    http://facstaff.uwa.edu/rmu/kyd.htm
Thomas Kyd and The Spanish Tragedy Biography Early Life . As is true in the case of Shakespeare, we do not know the exact day on which Thomas Kyd was born, but we do know that he was baptized in the Church of St. Mary Woolnoth, London, on November 6, 1558. This was eleven days before Queen Elizabeth came to the throne and some six years before the births of Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare, both of whom were born in 1564 (Freeman 1). Kyd’s father, Francis Kyd, was a successful scrivener. J.R. Mulryne says that he "achieved some distinction as a scrivener, serving as Warden of the Company of Scriveners in 1580" (xi). A scrivener had the duty of copying documents, especially legal documents and therefore occupied a prominent position in the legal world and was usually a person with a good education. Arthur Freeman says that scriveners "considered themselves a distinguished guild" and "maintained high educational standards among themselves" (3). Thus it is not surprising that Francis also sought to provide a good education for Thomas and in 1565, shortly before Thomas turned seven years old, enrolled him in the Merchant Taylors’ School. Education Nothing is known about Kyd specifically during his years as a student, but a great deal is known about the school he attended, and it is almost certain that he had the same type of curriculum that the school provided to its other students. It was a new school, three years younger than Thomas Kyd, but it had high admission standards, requiring that its students know the catechism in either English or Latin and that they were able to read and write before they would be admitted (Freeman 6).
