Joanne Kyger and the Tradition of Zen Beatitude
by Kirby Olson Author's Links

In a poem published in the San Francisco poetry journal Bluebook , Kyger writes of a phone conversation with fellow Zen practitioner Philip Whalen:
A Brisk Wind is Blowing Thoughts Clear Through to Phili on the Phone
'The New York Times says I'm a language poet.'
"Well are you?'
'No. Of course not.'
'Are you a beat poet?'
'No. I'm my own poet.'
'George Stanley says you're an Oregon poet.'
'Ha ha.' 'Do you understand what deconstruction is?' 'No.' 'Well, if you don't, I won't bother to try.' May 14, 1999 This short dismissal of poetry affiliations, with its consequent claim of the ability to be one's "own" poet, flies in the face of critical discourse which seeks to define poets in terms of a tradition and practice. And yet, can a poet exist outside of a tradition, outside of a school, with no ancestors, and no hope of being understood from within a common framework of reference, with no fellow poets to correspond, and read with? Kyger's interview in Crooked Cucumber: The Life and Zen Teaching of Shunryu Suzuki , offers an intense biographical list of philosophies, poetries, and fellow seekers in the California scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s, which does much to negate the sense that good poets are ever found who don't consciously work within some tradition. "My own interest in Zen came about because I had been studying Wittgenstein and Heidegger in Santa Barbara.

I think about the weather as I tighten the laces of my boots. I stand a good chance of getting caught in the rain on my way to Bolinas. Turning off the lights and locking the door, the grey of morning has failed to ease much. Clots of mist snag on the surrounding pointy tree hillsides, postcard perfect. The damp cold invigorating, I stride the three-quarters of a mile into Monte Rio, briefcase in hand. I think out my itinerary: a series of bus transfers to a point where I will have to hitch a ride the rest of the way, about 25 miles. What if it rains? What if no one stops to pick me up? What if I miss my connections? What am I doing?

Waiting on the 9 AM bus, a neighbor offers a ride to the next wide spot in the road. She's in a hurry, late for an appointment. We speed around the curves and shoot down the straight-aways following the swollen, muddy river. I tell her I'm on my way to Bolinas because I've been invited to read my poems at the public library there. She's reminded of her youth growing up in Marin County and how she used to hang out in Bolinas because it was a hip place to be, to go get stoned and party. "Ah, Bolinas!"

Courtesy Carolyn Cassady Affair of the Art: Carolyn and Neal Cassady embrace for amateur photographer Jack Kerouac in a snapshot taken in San Francisco in 1951. The Beat women regain their voices at 'Fast Speaking' conference By Geoffrey Dunn M ORE THAN four decades after the apotheosis of the Beat Movement in the mid-1950s, it's easy to forget just how terribly sexistif not downright misogynistthose times were. Center stage was solely the sanctum of men: Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady, Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, Gary Snyder and Michael McClure. Women, for the most part, were left to the periphery of the movement, their roles limited to those of wives, sex objects and castoff lovers, their voices muted, their triumphs trivialized. Only a handful of women writers were included in the Viking Portable Beat Reader : Diane DiPrima, Brenda Frazer and Anne Waldman . In her breakthrough feminist memoirs of the era, Minor Characters , Joyce Anderson, one of Kerouac's lovers during the '50s, chronicled a world where the women of the Beat circle were forced to "lead lives that didn't fit them."
