Dwarfism
by Angeline Cardinale
If people, both average and short stature, were able to place their humanity before everything else, the world might be a much better place. The more we stick labels on each other, the more we segregate ourselves, and the more we encourage ignorance and prejudice.
The book Stones from the River, by Ursula Hegi, gives a first-hand account of a dwarf named Trudi.Although Trudi is just a fictional character, she is faced with many prejudices against her from the people around her, while dealing with her own emotional turmoil over accepting herself for who she is.Trudi, like other dwarfs of the past and present, is forced to accept who she is.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback One of the major Swedish writers of the first half of the 20th-century, a moralist, who used religious motifs and figures from the Christian tradition without strictly following the doctrines of the Church. Lagerkvist was a particularly outspoken critic of totalitarianism. Among his central themes was the fundamental question of good and evil, which he examined through such figures as the medieval red-hooded hangman, Barabbas, and the wandering Jew Ahasuerus. Lagerkvist was a member of the Swedish Academy and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1951. "The the countryside opened around them in every direction, with marshlands, little lakes, all sorts of waters, with tiled strips, grazing lands, countless ploughed squares, with fenced pastures, boglands and woodlands and farmsteads scattered among the oats and the rye out in the sun. The light was so friendly and open everything could be seen, and in the distance Grandfather's place was in sight, sheltered in a group of maples." (from Guest of Reality August Strinberg "Love is nothing. Anguish is everything / the anguish of living."

BIOGRAPHY

Lagerkvist studied art history at the University of Uppsala in the years 1911-1912 and published his first book, the story collection People ) in 1912. In 1913, following a visit to Paris, he published the essay Ordkonst och bildkonst Literary Art and Pictorial Art ), in which he attacked the "degenerate" literary art of the day and proposed Cubism and Expressionism as models for the development of a modern literary style. During World War I he lived in Denmark, where he wrote Anguish, poems, 1916) and began to study the theatre. His 1918 essay Teater Modern Theatre ) argued that the Naturalism exemplified by Ibsen was outmoded for modern stage works. Instead, Lagerkvist promoted the later Expressionistic plays of August Strindberg as models of modern stage works. After visiting Italy in 1919, Lagerkvist wrote Det eviga leendet The Eternal Smile, 1920), one of his most famous stories. Guest of Reality The Hangman, 1933; play, 1934) shows his growing concern with the totalitarianism that began to sweep across Europe in the years prior to World War II. The Dwarf ), a cautionary tale about evil, brought him international attention.

95. Pär Lagerkvist - Biography
Pär lagerkvist – Biography. Pär lagerkvist (18911974), son of station masterAnders Johan lagerkvist and Johanna Blad, was born in the south of Sweden.
http://www.nobel.se/literature/laureates/1951/lagerkvist-bio.html
(1891-1974), son of station master Anders Johan Lagerkvist and Johanna Blad, was born in the south of Sweden. He decided early that he was going to be a writer and, after a year at the University of Uppsala , he left for Paris (1913), where he came under the influence of expressionism, especially in painting. His impressions resulted in the programmatic Ordkonst och bildkonst (1913) [Verbal Art and Pictorial Art]. Until 1930 Lagerkvist lived chiefly in France and Italy, and even after his permanent return to Sweden he frequently travelled on the Continent and in the Mediterranean.
Lagerkvist has given an account of his early years in the autobiographical volumes Guest of Reality ] and Det besegrade livet (1927) [The Conquered Life]. His poetry moves from the anxiety and despair of the war years, as in Anguish (1926) [Songs from the Heart].
