In 1895 financial support from the royal family and the Swedish Academy encouraged her to abandon teaching altogether. She travelled in Italy and wrote Antikris mirakler (1897) [ The Miracles of Antichrist ], a novel set in Sicily. After several minor works she published Jerusalem The Holy City ], a novel about Swedish peasants who emigrated to the Holy Land and whom she had visited in 1900. Lagerlof, Selma (1891, tr. 1898), a romantic tale of a renegade priest, lyrical in style; Jerusalem (1901, tr. 1901-2); and a trilogy (1925-28) which was published in English as The Ring of the Lowenskolds (1931). Several of her works, often based on legends and sagas, served as the basis for early Swedish films. The short stories of The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (1906, tr. 1907) are classics of children's literature. She received the 1909 Nobel Prize in Literature, the first woman to be thus honored.

    Selma Lagerlöf
    En uppsats om Selma Lagerlöf som jag gjorde i ämnet svenska B. I detta fördjupningsarbete har jag att tagit upp lite om Selmas liv från vaggan till graven samt lite referat från några av hennes böcker. Inledning Selma Lagerlöf (1858 - 1940) räknas som en av Sveriges största författare genom tiderna. Hennes böcker var och är älskade av både barn och vuxna. Min första kontakt med Selma Lagerlöfs verk var i lågstadiet i skolan när fröken läste högt ur Nils Holgerssons underbara Resa. Som vuxen läste jag En herrgårdssägen och Kejsarn av Portugallien och det var då jag upptäckte vilken fantastisk författare Selma Lagerlöf var. Därför tyckte jag att det var lämpligt att välja att använda mig av Selma Lagerlöf och hennes verk som fördjupningsarbete. I detta fördjupningsarbete kommer jag att ta upp lite om Selmas liv, från vaggan till graven, hur hon skrev, berättarteknik och stil samt att ge korta referat från några av hennes böcker. Selma Lagerlöf målad av Hanna Pauli ca 1929-32
    Selma Lagerlöf En mörk novemberkväll 1858 föddes en liten flicka på en liten herrgård som hette Mårbacka. Hon var dotter till löjtnant Erik Gustaf Lagerlöf och Louise Lagerlöf, född Wallroth och var deras fjärde barn. Flickan fick namnet Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf.

    Selma Lagerlof
    N ovelista y premio Nobel sueca, autora de gran cantidad de novelas y narraciones breves sobre la vida cotidiana y la historia de su país. Nació en Marbacka y, entre 1885 y 1895, fue maestra en una escuela de Landskrona. Sus primeros dos libros La leyenda de Gosta Berling (1891), una recopilación de cuentos folclóricos de Varmland reescritos por la autora en una prosa lírica y Lazos invisibles (1894), una colección de relatos breves le crearon una sólida reputación. A partir de 1895 se dedicó por completo a la literatura ya que la Corona le concedió un estipendio anual a perpetuidad. Sus obras, basadas, por lo general, en historias y cuentos populares suecos, se caracterizan por su naturalidad y su frescura. Sus personajes son gentes sencillas, que contribuyen a que triunfe siempre el bien sobre el mal. Selma Lagerlof recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1909 —la primera mujer en obtenerlo—, y en 1914 fue elegida miembro de la Academia Sueca, con justo merecimiento, pues su estilo no ha tenido parangón en la literatura sueca. Entre sus numerosos escritos se pueden citar las novelas Jerusalén (1901-1902), un cuento sobre un movimiento religioso en una apartada zona de Suecia, que desemboca en un éxodo a Palestina;
