A Conversation with Jhumpa Lahiri

The New Yorker's Best Debut of the Year
Los Angeles Times Book Prize
San Francisco Chronicle
The Best American Short Stories The New Yorker Interpreter of Maladies introduces, in the words of Frederick Busch, "a writer with a steady, penetrating gaze. Lahiri honors the vastness and variousness of the world." Amy Tan concurs: "Lahiri is one of the finest short story writers I’ve read. Questions for Discussion We hope the following questions will stimulate discussion for reading groups and provide a deeper understanding of Interpreter of Maladies for every reader. What kinds of marriage are presented in the stories? One reviewer has written that Lahiri's "subject is not love's failure, ... but the opportunity that an artful spouse (like an artful writer) can make of failure ... " Do you agree or disagree with that assessment? Lahiri has said, "As a storyteller, I'm aware that there are limitations in communication." What importance in the stories do miscommunication and unexpressed feelings have?

Another of our conversations with winners of this year's Pulitzer prizes in the arts, and once again, to Elizabeth Farnsworth. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: The fiction winner this year was Jhumpa Lahiri for her collection of short stories, "Interpreter of Maladies." Using a variety of characters, Lahiri gives life in these stories to the feelings of alienation, loneliness, and hope that so often mark the immigrant experience. She was born in England in 1967 and raised in Rhode Island. Her parents were born and raised in India. "Interpreter of maladies" is her first book, and the title story also won an O. Henry award. Thank you for being with us, and congratulations. JHUMPA LAHIRI, Pulitzer Prize, Fiction: Thank you. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: Tell us about the title of the book. It's an unusual title, "Interpreter of Maladies." Where does it come from? ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: It occurred to me that you're kind of an interpreter of maladies yourself in these stories.

The story "Interpreter of Maladies" has been selected for both the O. HENRY AWARD and inclusion in The Best American Short Stories. Born in London, raised in New England, now living in New York City, "cosmopolitan" Lahiri is marked as an "ethnic writer." But in some ways Lahiri does not satisfy the checklist of ethnic writers. Her stories are set in India and the U.S., and travel back and forth with no effort. In Lahiri's sympathetic tales, the pang of disappointment turns into a sudden hunger to know more...Lahiri's achievement is something like Twinkle's. She breathes unpredictable life into the page, and the reader finishes each story reseduced, wishing he could spend a whole novel with its characters. There is nothing accidental about her success; her plots are as elegantly constructed as a fine proof in mathematics.

It is hard to believe that this is Jhumpa Lahiri's debut collection of short stories. Written with an assured hand, the language and evocative imagery frequently reminded me of that other great short story writer - Anita Desai. 'When Mr Pirzada came to dine" and "Mrs Sen's" are both tales that are like Polaroid snapshots, capturing in soft focus the fleeting moments of life. The former explores the camaraderie that builds up between an Indian family and a Bangladeshi colleague, "all Asians together in America". This cosy relationship shattered by civil war in 1971. Separated (only by distance) from his wife and daughters, Mr Pirzada endlessly scrutinises TV coverage of the war. Replace this scenario with the Gulf War, Afghanistan or even the expulsion of Asians from Uganda, and it is easy to see that the same influences apply today.

Food Metaphor in jhumpa lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies . I. The personallife of jhumpa lahiri is the very prototype of diasporic culture.

Food Metaphor in Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter of Maladies"
Dr. Asha Choubey, Lecturer, Post-Graduate Dept. of English Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Bareilly, U.P., India
Born and brought up at Calcutta, I have now settled in Bareilly. On our annual visit to our home-town when the train reaches Asansol station, the vendor's call of jhalmuri enters my ears as the song of the Nightingale announcing my physical proximity to my home. I have come to associate jhalmuri with home; so much so that for me home is where jhalmuri is. Food, though apparently a trivial matter, serves as an important social as well as national role. Out of all the significant aspects of community life, food (apart from arts) is perhaps the only one that binds while all others separate one community from the other. Food and culinary items define social hierarchies, and serve as a driving force behind people's actions. Food delineates privilege, economic class, and social position. Food is a land issue and a power issue. Food sustains life. As Chisaga points out, one's stomach is one's ancestor it rumbles like a lion, refusing to be ignored. For immigrants and non-residents food certainly serves as an important part of their identity. When away from home the food from one's land brings as much pleasure as mother's voice on overseas calls. Food provides a link it induces a sense a sense of belonging in an otherwise alien world. Food serves as a key to binding. In a strange land familiar items of food are as welcome as familiar faces. Just as music or art breeds familiarity, food also serves as a medium of link. Food is an important part of cultural exchange and bonding as such its importance in the study of diaspora cannot be undermined. The present study aims to trace how Jhumpa Lahiri makes an effective use of food metaphor in
