A Champion's Cause : A Feminist Study of Nayantara Sahgal's Fiction with Special Reference to Her Last Three Novels Dr. Asha Choubey, Lecturer, Post-Graduate Dept. of English Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Bareilly, U.P., India This paper was presented at the National Seminar on "Quest for Identity and Female Self-Assertiveness’ organised by Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Kanpur on13-14 November 1999. As a writer with feminist concerns, Nayantara Sahgal is a progeny of the tradition wherein power itself is deified as goddess "Sakti’" a female symbol. Her novels seek to posit the independent existence of women and atrophy all attempts to preclude them from the centre-stage of human existence. The attempts to attenuate women-power have been condemned by a number of writers in recent Indian English fiction, but weapons do differ. Sahgal's approach towards the issue is holistic and focuses mainly on the question of identity-crisis for women. She believes: Through the rewriting women do, new Sitas and Savitris will arise, stripped of false sanctity and crowned with the human virtue of courage. Then at last we will know why they did what they did, and how their lone, remote struggles can help our search for identity and emancipation. The moral in that award being that the short story is alive and well, and that even in this modern age of flickering screens, the oldest medium excels in depicting the human saga. The turn of the century was the ideal time for such a message. Modern life with its manifestations of instant culture in sync with the instant presentations of foods, beverages and even entertainment finds short fiction, along with music and art, as the essential counterpoise to its jagged and hazardous trajectories. If we have to overcome the trauma of reading everyday news with its haunting killings, be it by soldiers in battlefields, or by urban guerillas or the mindless destruction by terrorists or even the caprices of American schoolboys with hand guns, if we have to overcome the horrors reported almost daily of gang rape or bobbitisation, here is the supreme antidote to the emotional perils of life. Her title story has been selected for both the O'Henry award and the annual Best American Short Stories. Topping this, the book, last month, won her the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, 2000. Born in London of Indian parents and raised in Rhode Island, Jhumpa Lahiri studied at Boston University, receiving a Ph. D. in English. The stories in her first book focus on the intercultural miscommunications and conflicts all too often experienced by Indian immigrants and second generation Indian-Americans. "Interpreter of Maladies," at 27 pages the longest in the collection, is a multi-layered story about a second-generation Indian-American couple, who along with their three children are visiting India and hire a tour-guide to see the famous Sun Temple at Konarak. Their guide, Mr. Kapasi (we never learn his first name), becomes curious about the couple who look Indian, yet dress like American tourists and speak with an American accent he had heard many times on American TV shows. The opening sentences describe the bickering that symptomizes this failing marriage. Mr. Kapasi works as a tour guide only on weekends, and has another job during the weekdays as an interpreter in a doctor's office translating the Gujarati spoken by some of his patients. I've read quite a few novels by writers from India, but this is the first time I've read a collection of short stories focused on that country. Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies floats between India and the United States. In her stories about immigrants, Lahiri deftly examines the reactions to changes in cultures, the ties that keep people linked to their homelands, and the family ties that pull us in what sometimes seem to be opposite directions. Other stories, such as the title story, look at people of Indian descent who visit the country, and the difficulties that sometimes occur as they go in search of their heritage. Lahiri shows great skill in her explorations of human relations, and the powerful effect that our heritage can have on us. And really, that's what Lahiri's stories are all about, relationships between parent and child, lovers, siblings, young and old, American and immigrant, husband and wife, and even simply between residents of the same building. Lahiri is an engaging writer and handles dialogue very well. Her writing style is straightforward, solid and narrative driven. Things happen in Lahiri's stories, yet her lack of prosy attention to details does not detract from the enjoyment of these stories.

While it focuses on the experience of Indian immigrants to America, and their difficulties adjusting to its sterility and anomie, much of it rings true to anyone whose life has been spent on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. For everything that is gained in the new world, something is inevitably lost from the old. Of the nine stories that comprise the collection, four are dedicated to this straddling of worlds - "When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine", "Interpreter of Maladies", "Mrs. Sen's", and "The Third and Final Continent." The others concern Indians in India, or Indians whose estrangement from the mother country is not a chief concern. The stories set in India effectively transplant the reader into a gritty, strife-filled world many lack the courage to visit, but the four transcontinental stories are more likely to resonate with transcontinental readers. The book contains 9 short stories, of which one of the short story is titled 'Interpreter of Maladies', which has been chosen as the name of the book. Is Jhumpa merely a story-teller? Or is she, as the title suggests, an interpreter of maladies afflicting modern society? Each of the stories deal with characters caught in the vortex of life, at times finding happiness by surmounting their problems ( A Temporary Matter) or by a stroke of luck ( The Treatment of Bibi Halder ). At other times, more hardship and despair stares at their face in the end ( A Real Durwan) or their fantasies gets shattered ( Interpreter of Maladies). Some of the stories, I felt, left the readers with a few questions unanswered. For example, in the story 'Mrs. Sen' I couldn't figure out at the end why there existed a gulf between Mr. and Mrs. Sen? Is it the lack of offspring in their lives? Or was I really missing something? Also in the story 'The Blessed House,' how come so much of treasure have been left behind by the previous owners? Jhumpa doesn't attempt to unravel the mystery behind this treasure stored in the Blessed House, but only inform her readers that this discovery leads to the relationship between the newly-wedded couples getting strained.
