Anti-Lamott By Paulina Borsook When I was 17, I spent a summer in Marin County, where as often as I could I'd wander into Tiburon, to rejoice in the views of the bay. I was an au pair for my sister who lived in Mill Valley, and I spent a lot of time in the tree-shaded public library of that bohemian burb. It was there I found a book that made me feel less alone, written by someone named Lamott, a book which spoke exactly to where I was and how I was feeling, confused and despairing. It was startling in its candor and it got me shaking my head and saying "So true, so true" as I went along reading it. What courage the author had, to write what so many people feel but never have the nerve to say! Kenneth Lamott, this remarkable writer was. The book was Anti-California and it spoke lyrical hard truths with a strong personal writerly voice. It never occurred to me that today's "West Coast Live" regular, Salon columnist, best-selling professional single-mom-and-Christian Anne Lamott could have been any relation to this man who so moved me 25 years ago. Could such a tough-minded dad have created such a tender-minded daughter?

Anne Lamott isn't afraid to believe By Kelly Luker AS BABY BOOMERS mine through drugs, booze, casual sex, bioenergetics, encounter groups and Prozac to find some kind of there , there inside, it was inevitable that they would finally turn to religion. Not Buddhism or Tao, but Christianity. Boomers and Jesus are still an odd-looking couple and fairly suspect among the literati, cogniscenti and your basic artsy-fartsies, but with writers like Anne Lamott sharing their religious rebirth, that's bound to change. A collection of essays, many of which first appeared in the online magazine Salon , Lamott's new book, Traveling Mercies , offers up one woman's walkhalting, stumbling, yet full of wisdomalong life's potholed little highway. A leftwing activist and hardcore feminist, Lamott shares her horror upon discovering she was called to a relationship with the Holy Son: "I was appalled. I thought about my life and my brilliant hilarious progressive friends, I thought about what everyone would think of me if I became a Christian. ... I turned to the wall and said out loud, 'I would rather die.' " To be sure, Lamott plows familiar sentiments in this passage. Famed Christian author C.S. Lewis wrote in his autobiography

Anne Lamott This year's Longo Lecture brought Anne Lamott, author of (among others) Operating Instructions Bird by Bird , and Traveling Mercies , to PUC. A successful writer and lecturer known for her salty language and hilarious confessional candor, Lamott is unique in that she is also known for being a devout Christian. According to Greg Schneider, sociology professor and head of the Longo Lecture committee, Lamott "was pleased to receive a lecture invitation where the organizers wanted her to talk about writing and Jesus. She usually gets invitations asking her to discuss writing, but to exclude anything regarding Jesus." Anne Lamott began her lecture by stepping to the podium (blonde dreadlocks and all) and saying, "I'm surprised anyone's here; the figure skating championships are tonight." During her lecture, Lamott gave the audience several rules for success in writing and faith. The first rules were to start where you are, and to stop every once in a while. Lamott illustrated this rule by explaining the beginning process of her fiction, and the beginning of her Christian walk as a "drunk, stoned, bulimic Christian with every deficiency but gambling." She went on to explain her encounter with Jesus by saying, "My father raised me as an atheist, and after my first experience with Jesus I felt like I'd rather die." Her struggle to overcome her father's hatred for Christianity demonstrated her view "that truth is found by throwing out what you were told is truth and wasn't."

From the Book Jacket:
From the bestselling author of Operating Instructions and Bird by Bird comes a chronicle of faith and spirituality that is at once tough, personal, affectionate, wise and very funny.
With an exuberant mix of passion, insight, and humor, Anne Lamott takes us on a journey through her often troubled past to illuminate her devout but quirky walk of faith. In a narrative spiced with stories and scripture, with diatribes, laughter, and tears, Lamott tells how, against all odds, she came to believe in God and then, even more miraculously, in herself. She shows us the myriad ways in which this sustains and guides her, shining the light of faith on the darkest part of ordinary life and exposing surprising pockets of meaning and hope.
Whether writing about her family or her dreadlocks, sick children or old friends, the most religious women of her church of the men she's dated, Lamott reveals the hard-won wisdom gathered along her path to connectedness and liberation.

Crooked Little Heart
by Anne Lamott
(review written: 30 June 2001 by Kevin D. Hendricks) Fiction 326 pages Doubleday Books Reading Anne Lamott's nonfiction is like talking to the ultimate sinner-turned-Christian. She's still rough around the edges and doesn't think that's a problem. In one sentence she swears and the next she marvels at Jesus. It's a little hard to handle for some, refreshing for others. Reading Anne Lamott's fiction is like trying a digestible version of the liberal Jesus freak. She writes about life directly and faith indirectly in a very approachable manner. She tells stories anyonechurched and unchurchedcan understand and appreciate. Crooked Little Heart is the story of a young girl becoming a teenager and her mother trying to cope, trying to accept the death of her husband and the fact that her child is now a young woman. It sounds all touchy-feely, but then the mother, Elizabeth, swears and cries and tries so hard and the young girl, Rosie, turns red with embarrassment and says their family is like a family you'd buy at a garage sale. Throw in a New Age friend who finds Jesus in the most natural and believable way, and you have the most realistic novel with Christian themes I've read in a while.

Traveling Mercies
by Anne Lamott
This month, the book we will reflect on is Traveling Mercies I bring your attention first to the commentary on the front cover flap which gives us this introduction: For me, this immediately called to mind what I consider to be a foundational statement of Teilhard de Chardin in his book, The Divine Milieu Traveling Mercies , it seems to me that this is exactly what Anne was doing, probably unknowingly. She was responding to the action, to the movement of God in her life, even before she believed in God or ever paused to think that God might be actively involved in her day-to-day living and concerns.

Sometimes, if you are lucky and brave, you can watch someone who's met with serious illness or loss, do this kind of restoration, this work that you may suspect we are here on earth to do. Or if you've ever seen David Roche, the monologist and pastor of the Church of 80 Percent Sincerity, you may have already witnessed this process.
David and I met years ago through a mutual friend. The first time we spoke was on the phone and we talked about God for half an hour. He mentioned that he had some facial deformity, and I thought, Well, whatever, and we talked some more, and then he came to my church, and it turns out he has the most severe facial deformities I've ever seen.

Jesus And A Sack Full Of Boo-Boo Fish:
A Review Of Anne Lamott's Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts On Faith (Pantheon Books:New York, February 1999, 275 pgs, $23.00).

Based on the rave reviews and early commercial success of Anne Lamott's recently released spiritual memoir of her daily struggles as a single mom, I was expecting a new classic of Christian spirituality, perhaps The Confessions Of Saint Anne. What I found was a collection of essays penned by a literary John Teshgood intentions mixed with adequate technical skills resulting in muzak best suited for calming the nerves of emotionally unhinged ferrets. Alas, I must vote against Lamott's otherwise certain elevation to sainthood. Can one essay derail the beatific process in the face of the mass adoration of Mother Lamott? Can a crosswalk guard keep millions of lemming from plunging over the cliff? Probably not, but let's make the case anyway.
The many readers and reviewers finding Traveling Mercies so satisfying may be a financial boon to author and publisher, but the sales numbers are a sobering warning of the spiritual dehydration of our generation. Each book sale represents a dead canary in the mine shaft. A soul crawling across the arid desert will gulp down iguana urine to quench its thirst, and be grateful for the opportunity.

Anne Lamott in The Writer
She's the coolest, isn't she? I love her style even if I am way behind in keeping up with her books. In the April issue of The Writer, editor Ronald Kovach interviews Anne Lamott. Straight Shooter: Anne Lamott succeeds with honest writing It's pretty darn cool that The Writer puts this up on their site. I'd think that this interview alone could sell a few mags. Best selling novelist Anne Lamott lives in the Bay Area, is a regular at Book Passage, and just happens to be included in Sand In My Bra. TT has excerpted her several times over the years and I actually like the story we used in A Woman's Path more than the one we did for Sand.

bird by bird - anne lamott
Terrific. I had heard a lot about this book , and all of it is true. Enjoyable, practical, knowledgeable advice on writing. And she's so funny. Funny is good, funny should be promoted more. There is plenty of depression and negativity going round already. Anne Lamott may be a tad bitter at times, or perhaps a bit hysterical , she always comes out funny and dead right. The message is of course that writing is hard, novels do not flow out of people's pens fully formed. This may be old hat to all of you, and I have known it for years, but each time I read such a good account of what actually happens, it's still news to me. Loved the part about Shitty First Drafts (been there!). Hated the bit about it often taking six (or seven, or ...) shitty drafts before something Good arrives. The book is also a terrific cure for ever wanting to publish. Her hilarious stories about how bad you feel once the work has been submitted to an agent/editor/publisher and how much worse you feel when the book is actually published (the reviews!) have me cured of that particular desire for now. And I don't regret it. Let's focus on writing something interesting and worthwhile first, something I feel good about and actually enjoy writing, and let's worry about that other hurdle later. Amen.

Anne Lamott,
Traveling Mercies
(Pantheon, 1999)
Traveling Mercies is a collection of short pieces, many of which appeared previously in Lamott's column for the online magazine Salon . Lamott's spirituality is the tie that binds them together, and her faith is at once down to earth and uplifting. The introductory section of the book is called "Overture: Lily Pads," and in describing her circuitous route to belief she writes that it was "... a series of staggers from what seemed like one safe place to another. Like lily pads, round and green, these places summoned and then held me up while I grew." She describes growing up in a nonreligious family and how her exposure to different faiths is through the practices of her friends' families. In college, she is attracted to Judaism; while she doesn't convert formally, her Jewish friends hold a bat mitzvah for her. Later, living on her own in a houseboat in Sausalito, she is drawn to a small, funky Presbyterian church where she begins to hang out, listening in the doorway but leaving before the sermon. She writes that while she believed in God, she was not ready for Christianity, saying: "Mine was a patchwork God, sewn together from bits of rag and ribbon, Eastern and Western, pagan and Hebrew, everything but the kitchen sink and Jesus."
