The long-range goal of the Piers Plowman Electronic Archive is the creation of a multi-level, hyper-textually linked electronic archive of the textual tradition of all three versions of the fourteenth-century allegorical dream vision Piers Plowman . Project editors Robert Adams, Eric Eliason, Ralph Hanna, III, Thorlac Turville-Petre, and I will begin by making documentary editions of B manuscripts CFGHmLMRW in the first years, by preparing color digital facsimiles of those manuscripts, by reconstructing the B archetype (the latest common copy from which all extant witnesses can be shown to descend), and by establishing a critical edition of the B version with appropriate textual, linguistic, and codicological annotation for each of the three levels of the

Langland, William (1330?-1400?). Visio Willi de Petro Plouhman: item visiones ejusdem de Dowel, Dobet, et Dobest, or the vision of William concerning Peirs Plouhman, and the visions of the same concerning the origin, progress and perfection of the Christian life / ascribed to Robert Langland ... printed from a ms. contemporary with the author, collated with two others of great antiquity, and exhibiting the original text; together with an introductory discourse, a perpetual commentary, annotations, and a glossary. Ed. Thomas Dunham Whitaker. Title page verso: Joseph Harding, Printer, St. John's Square, London. Vol. 2 has special title page: Pierce the Ploughman's crede. London: John Murray, 1813. London: Lackington, Allen, 1814. William Langland's allegorical poem Piers Plowman (not Robert Langland's, as the title alleges) reflects growing concern about the corruption evident in the late medieval Church and the state of the human soul on earth; it also reflected the political and social concerns of northern England in the fourteenth century in the wake of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. Thomas Whitaker (1759-1821), topographer, local historian, and vicar of Blackburn, translated the text for to its local interest and for its didactic content. William Langland (c. 1330-1387)
Langland was probably a minor ecclesiastic (not a priest) from the Malvern Hills area in the western English Midlands ; later lived in London and made a living by singing masses and doing clerical work; the author refers to himself in the poem, "I have lived in land ... my name is Long Will" (15.152) Piers Plowman (Visio Willelmi de Petrus Plowman, " Vision of William Concerning Peter the Plowman" narrative poem in unrhymed alliterative verse; text divided into sections called Passi (Passus = "step"); three versions extant in 47 manuscripts:
  • 1360's, A-text, 2558 lines 1370's, B-text, 7302 lines, 20 Passi 1387, C-text, 7338 lines, 22 Passi

  • vision of Holy Church and Lady Meed (Gain/Profit) Piers leads crowd in search of Truth vision of Do-Well (virtue), Do-Better (charity), Do-Best (identity with Christ)
leaders of Peasants' Revolt (1381) quoted passages from Piers Plowman which was also popular with religious reformers, like John Wycliffe (1320-1384), because of its seeming glorification of the humble and the poor; Langland however was a political and religious conservative very much in favor of the existing hierarchies and traditional powers and had no sympathy for social or religious reform movements

Piers Plowman or The Vision of Piers Plowmana long religious allegory in alliterative verse A-, B-, and C-texts: The first, about twenty-four hundred lines long, breaks off at a rather inconclusive point in the action: the second, a revision of the first plus an extension of more than four thousand lines; and the third is a revision of the second. The entire work conforms with the notion that its author was a man who was educated to enter the church but who, through marriage and lack of preferment, was reduced to poverty and may well have wandered in his youth like those "hermits" he scornfully describes in the prologue. The forma dream vision : a common medieval type in which the author presents the story under the guise of having dreamed it. The dream vision involves allegory, not only because one expects form a dream the unrealistic, the fanciful, but also because people have always suspected that dreams relate the truth in disguised formthat they are natural allegories. Theme Theme : Langland's theme is nothing less than the history of Christianity as it unfolds both in the world of the Old and new Testaments and in the life and heart of an individual fourteenth-century Christiantwo seemingly distinct realms between which the poet's allegory moves with dizzying rapidity. The poet describes fourteenth-century English society in terms of its failure to represent an ideal society living in accord with Christian principles:
