The Sidney Lanier Bridge
A new cable-stayed bridge is being built to replace the existing Sidney Lanier Bridge in Brunswick, Georgia. Named after the author of The Marshes of Glynn, the new bridge will be the longest spanning bridge in the state and allow larger ships to enter the port of Brunswick. Complicating the design and construction were a number of environmental considerations that had to be addressed. This page was written to explain the construction of such a large project. Construction of the bridge was broken into three contracts as follow:
  • Approach Spans
  • Main Span
  • Removal of Old Bridge If you have questions about the bridge, please refer to the FAQ . Thanks for your interest in this project!

  • The Marshes of Glynn
    by Sidney Lanier
    Glooms of the live-oaks, beautiful-braided and woven
    With intricate shades of the vines that myriad-cloven
  • Clamber the forks of the multiform boughs,
  • Emerald twilights,
    Virginal shy lights,
  • Wrought of the leaves to allure to the whisper of vows,
    When lovers pace timidly down through the green colonnades
    Of the dim sweet woods, of the dear dark woods,
  • Of the heavenly woods and glades,
  • That run to the radiant margianl sand-beach within
  • The wide sea-marshes of Glynn;
  • Beautiful glooms, soft dusks in the noon-day fire, Wildwood privacies, closets of lone desire, Chamber from chamber parted with wavering arras of leaves, Cells for the passionate pleasure of prayer to the soul that grieves, Pure with a sense of the passing of saints through the wood, Cool for the dutiful weighing of ill with good; O braided dusks of the oak and woven shades of the vine, While the riotous noon-day sun of the June-day long did shine Ye held me fast in your heart and I held you fast in mine;

First day of issue ceremonies were held in Macon, where Lanier was born. [Click here to see the canceled stamp on a souvenir envelope.] Sidney Lanier was born in Macon, Ga. on Feb. 3, 1842. He graduated from Oglethorpe University in 1860, serving as a tutor there until the outbreak of the Civil War. In the spring of 1861, Lanier joined the Macon Volunteers. He was captured in 1864 and imprisoned in a Union prison in Maryland, where he contacted a lung disease. After the war, Lanier had a series of jobs, during which time he began writing novels and poems. His best works were written in 1869 and afterwards. Some, such as "Thar's More in the Man Than Thar Is in the Land," were written in rural Georgia dialect, while others such as "The Marshes of Glynn" were more serious in nature. [Click here to view his collected poems.] As his health continued to deteriorate, Lanier traveled to the mountains of North Carolina, where he died of tuberculosis in Lynn, N.C. on Sept. 7, 1881. O Among his greatest supporters were the Turnbulls, and Lanier often entertained members of the family in the music room at the family mansion in Beethoven Terrace on Park Avenue by McMechen Street. In a letter of July 5, 1881, he wrote to the Turnbulls from Camp Robin near Asheville, North Carolina. He sent them "the whole valley full of green-leaf wishes and summer longings" and wished they could be with him on "this great mountain that lifts us into the air, 2,000 feet higher than the corner of McMechen Street and Park Avenue." Tragically, before the end of the year, Lanier was dead from the consumption that had dogged him since his internment in Camp Point Lookout. He was only 39 years of age. He is buried in Green Mount Cemetery, in the Turnbull lot. His grave marker is a boulder with a bronze plaque showing the rays of the sun, in honor of one of his most famous poems, "Sunrise." The rising sun may also be seen on the bas-relief behind Schuler's statue of Lanier. Christopher T. George

    The Passion of the Beast
    Boston: The Stratford Co., 1928. 30611; PQ3; GL; TDB. An unusual novel, about the strange hold a gorilla exerts on an aristocratic French family. In Paris, William St. Clair meets Armand Dumesnil, who presently asks the American to accompany him to his family estate. There St. Clair meets Armand's beautiful sister, Yvonne, and learns that there is some mystery surrounding the family. He comes to learn that their father, Hippolyte Dumesnil, while on safari, had seen a female gorilla and her children killed by his bearers. He prevented them from killing her mate, whom he captured and named Melek. Melek soon thereafter saved Dumesnil's life, and was brought to live on the family estate. Dumesnil had come to believe that the lives of his own children, Armand and Yvonne, were owed to the ape, who proved to be extremely jealous of any attentions to Yvonne.

    Sidney Lanier
    by Edwin Mims [American (Southern U.S.) Scholar; 1872-1959. Preface The present volume is a biography of Lanier rather than a critical study
    of his work. So far as possible, I have told the story in his own words,
    or in the words of those who knew him most intimately. If I have erred
    in placing undue emphasis on the early part of his career, it was intentional,
    for that is the part of his life about which least is known
    I have intentionally emphasized his relation to the South, in order to avoid a misconception that he was a detached figure. The bibliographies prepared by Mr. Wills for the "Southern History Association" and by Mr. Callaway for his "Select Poems of Lanier" make one unnecessary for this volume. Of previously published material, I have been greatly indebted to the Memorial by Mr. William Hayes Ward, the fuller sketch by the late Professor W. M. Baskervill, and the volume of letters published by Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons. For new material

    The Sidney Lanier Bridge is a cable-stayed cast in place place project in the port city of Brunswick, Georgia. The main span of the Sidney Lanier Bridge is now under construction by Recchi-GLF, a joint venture. They are building this part of the bridge for $65,475,130. It was designed by DRC Consultants in New York City (later merged with T.Y. Lin of San Francisco). The main span contract includes part of the approach spans.
    The towers are 486 feet tall from the top of the footing to the top of the tower. The uprights are joined in two places by crossties, one below the cables and the other below the roadway. The tower is hollow and an elevator will be installed to go up to the upper crosstie. Ladders will take inspectors above the crosstie for access to the anchorages for the cable stays. Ladders will also extend from the roadway down to the bottom of the towers.
    The deck is continuous from one anchor pier to the other. The anchor pier holds the deck in place. The anchor pier must be strong enough to support the deck, but also flexible enough to accommodate the large deflections that arise as the length of the deck changes due to temperature shifts. The deck is supported by the cables but must be strong enough to carry traffic loads across the width of the bridge to the cables. It must also carry the enormous compression force that results from the angle of the cable stays
