Sidney Lanier (1842-1881) was born in Macon, Georgia. After serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, he held a variety of jobs and traveled widely throughout the northern and southern states. In addition to earning success as a poet, Lanier received praise as a professional flutist with the Peabody Symphony Orchestra in Baltimore before he died of tuberculosis in 1881.

Volunteer Clearinghouse Give a Helping Hand Volunteer Photo Gallery Lake Sidney Lanier, Georgia Lake Sidney Lanier, near Atlanta, Georgia, hosts a very active volunteer program with lots a great things happening. Volunteers do everything from working on the lake in a boat to staffing the Visitor Center to help provide information to the public. The bluebird populations has benefited from all the boxes built and put up by volunteers. Shoreline cleanups have provided a cleaner environment for all to enjoy. A volunteer even stepped in to help get the hook out of a nice catfish one gentleman caught. We're not sure who got to enjoy the fish dinner! Return to Industry Projects Index SIDNEY LANIER CABLE-STAYED BRIDGE, GEORGIA, USA A new cable-stayed bridge is being built to replace the existing Sidney Lanier Bridge in Brunswick, Georgia, USA. The new bridge will be the longest spanning bridge in the state and allow larger ships to enter the port of Brunswick. DESIGN The bridge was designed by DRC Consultants in New York City (later merged with T.Y. Lin of San Francisco). The towers are 486ft tall from the top of the footing to the top of the tower. The uprights are joined in two places by crossties, one below the cables and the other below the roadway. The tower is hollow and an elevator will be installed to go up to the upper crosstie. Ladders will take inspectors above the crosstie for access to the anchorages for the cable stays. Ladders will also extend from the roadway down to the bottom of the towers. The deck is continuous from one anchor pier to the other and is held in place by it. The anchor pier must be strong enough to support the deck, but also flexible enough to accommodate the large deflections that arise as the length of the deck changes due to temperature shifts. The deck is supported by the cables but must be strong enough to carry traffic loads across the width of the bridge to the cables. It must also carry the enormous compression force that results from the angle of the cable stays. TRAVELLERS The form travellers, originally fabricated in Europe, were assembled on the island below, one on the south and one on the north. When they begin operations, each traveller will move out from the tower one segment at a time. The primary purpose of the form traveller is to hold the wet concrete until it hardens into the proper shape. The form must then be stripped from the hardened concrete. To achieve this, all surfaces of the form are able to move. Construction of the bridge was broken into three contracts.

Literary San Antonio Sidney Lanier As a nineteenth-century travel writer, Frederick Law Olmsted had produced a readable, straightforward description of San Antonio and its tri-cultural inhabitants during the mid-1850's, but Sydney Lanier was the first writer of belletristic importance, especially in the Southern tradition, to describe the city from a more literary perspective. The accomplished Georgia flautist and poet came to San Antonio at the end of 1872, hoping to improve his tubercular condition, the town being, in Lanier's words, "a growing resort for consumptives" (Lanier 202). While here, he wrote a rambling essay based on his visit titled "San Antonio de Bexar," which was published in the July-August 1873 issue of the Southern Magazine . Even though the bulk of the essay is a historical sketch of San Antonio during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, borrowed mostly from H. Yoakum's History of Texas and a few other sources, Lanier took a genuine interest in the city's cultural diversity, its natural and architectural landmarks, and even its climate and topography.

Living Sidney Lanier Cottage Birthplace of the great Southern poet, Sidney Lanier, this cottage has been converted to a museum which is owned and operated by the Middle Georgia Historical Society. Lanier was a poet, musician, and scholar who was nationally known and particularly beloved in the South. He served in the Confederate Army until captured aboard a blockade runner and confined at Fort Lookout, Maryland. The ruling by Hall County Superior Court Judge John Girardeau cited a number of legal errors in the decision rendered in December 2002 by Administrative Law Judge Jessie Altman. Judge Girardeau concluded that the Administrative Law Judge erred by misinterpreting the federal and anti-degradation regulations protecting the water quality of Lake Lanier. In particular, Judge Girardeau concluded that Gwinnett County is able to meet stricter limits than those set in the permit and thus the lower water quality that would be allowed by the permit is not justifiable to provide necessary social or economic development. In addition, Judge Girardeau concluded that EPD failed to comply with public notice and comment requirements when EPD failed to allow public comment on a new discharge location in the permit.
