What can I say about Joe Lansdale that I haven't said to hundreds and thousands already? The man is one helluva story teller. I first read Joe Lansdale in 1987 with the release of his little horror ditty THE NIGHTRUNNERS. Well, when I read what Joe could do with a frog gigger - it should have chased me away - but instead I found myself looking for more Joe. He kinda grows on you, and then you're addicted! So I'm a gonna warn you now, if you start reading him, you better check your budget, because you just can't read one Joe Lansdale novel - ya gotta read it all!
Joe Lansdale's most recent success has been with Hap and Leonard in the novels SAVAGE SEASON, MUCHO MOJO, TWO BEAR MAMBO, and the brand new novel BAD CHILI. These two characters are almost like splitting Joe Lansdale in two - if you ever meet him (and you should) you'll know what I mean. Of course Joe's short fiction featured in BY BIZARRE HANDS, and A FIST FULL OF STORIES to name two, are perfect examples of his side-splitting humor with a dash (or a ladle full) of horror on the side. I'm tellin' ya to pick up some JOE! If you have any questions or suggestions, just e-mail me at OVERLOOKCN@AOL.COM and I'll be glad to talk yer ear off. If Joe was online, he'd do the same.

Joe R. Lansdale at Fantasycon XV, UK, 15-SEP-1990
Joe R. Lansdale was the Guest of Honor at Fantasycon XV in Birmingham, UK. A friend of mine recorded one of the Fantasycon sessions with Joe on September 15, 1990. The interview is pretty funny, as Joe is his ownself during the session. The interview was hosted by Stephen Gallagher and Stephen Jones. I cleaned up the recording quite a bit, removing most of the tape hiss. What's left is pretty clean. The interview is about 41 minutes long. I have made it available in both RealAudio and MP3 formats, with different encodings, resulting in different file sizes. Pick the size that best suits your connection! You can hear the Joe interview by clicking on one of the following choices: To download the files and save them on your hard drive, you may need to right-click on the highlighted text and select "Save Link As File...." or some-such selection. To listen to the RealAudio version, you'll need RealPlayer G2, which you can freely download from

The arrival of A FINE DARK LINE prompts a legitimate question regarding its author, Joe R. Lansdale: is there anything this guy can't do well? My first encounter with him was THE DRIVE IN, a science fiction horror novel. This was followed by THE MAGIC WAGON - a gothic western if you will - and COLD IN JULY, a mystery. Then came the Batman-based CAPTURED BY THE ENGINES, TARZAN'S LOST ADVENTURE, the Jonah Hex comic book story arcs, and on and on and on...and they are all great. So with A FINE DARK LINE, we have a coming of age novel set in rural Texas in the 1950s, a time both better and worse than our own and inexorably linked to it. And, like all his other works that have preceded it, A FINE DARK LINE is his finest work to date.
With A FINE DARK LINE, Lansdale continues to expand the breadth and scope of his literary vision. One could easily come to the conclusion that his talent and landscape know no boundaries. He is a writer who has exceeded the promise of his earliest work and the expectations of his readers - and will undoubtedly continue to do so.

The Two-Bear Mambo

Gollancz Paperback Original
Mucho Mojo introduces Leonard Pine and Hap Collins. One gay, one straight. One black, one white. And both filled with the wildest mixture of toughness, passion and savage wit you'd ever want to meet! Blend this with long days of blistering East Texan sun, boiling and sudden rain storms, a mysterious death and not much to do and you've a recipe for a hot, sharp smouldering tale that'll scorch your soul. After all, burning's quite a speciality with Leonard, but that's another story!
When Chester Pine dies he leaves his savings and dilapidated old house in the black neighbourhood to his favourite nephew Leonard. Never mind that he disowned him years before when he found out Leonard was gay. Now he's dead, Leonard feels sad about the old man. Hap and Leonard's friendship is such that they'd do anything for each other. So even though Hap didn't know Uncle Chester `from brown rice', Leonard talks him into going to the funeral and the two go shopping for clothes:
Hap: "...I paid up because I was the only one working these days, even if it was sporadically, and because Leonard never let me forget that it was my fault his leg was messed up. He'd say stuff like, 'You know I got this messed up on account of you,' then he'd pick something he wanted and I'd pay for it, because what he said was true. Wasn't for him, my funeral would have come before Uncle Chester's."

Rohrig But you make that sound so very tranquil, joe. lansdale Well, thewind can blow hard, and the water can run fast. That rhythm can build.
http://www.subterraneanpress.com/html/feat_0006a.html
Rohrig: How did the books of the Lost Lansdale collection WALTZ OF SHADOWS, SOMETHING LUMBER THIS WAY COMES and BLOOD DANCE wind up being lost? Lansdale: Rohrig: You're quoted as saying that without BLOOD DANCE there wouldn't have been a MAGIC WAGON... Lansdale: Yeah, I think that's partly true. It's really THE BOAR more than BLOOD DANCE. BLOOD DANCE had something to do with that, but I think I misquoted myself. It should have been THE BOAR. THE BOAR was a really good young adult novel I wrote and really liked, have liked it for years. I did try to market it, and had no luck. At the time the market was so different, and the book just didn't find a home. And it was a book that I wrote that it was a tune up for THE MAGIC WAGON in many ways, even though it's not like it. I think BLOOD DANCE has little elements little weird elements that I let go when I did MAGIC WAGON. So really both of those books were kind of tune ups for THE MAGIC WAGON. Rohrig: Weird elements? What do you mean by weird elements? Lansdale: BLOOD DANCE has a little touch of the mystic with one or two scenes in it. It's subtle, and I wanted to go farther with it, but I just didn't feel that was the appropriate one to do it in. In THE BOAR, I felt like what I captured was a very down-home, old fashioned style of storytelling, so those two things sort of came together, and I melded them into the tone I wanted for THE MAGIC WAGON. Although it's a very different book.

Joe R. Lansdale and Timothy Truman
The cult favorite team of Joe R. Lansdale and Timothy Truman are back together for the first time in years bringing all the hilarious insanity and violence that made their Jonah Hex series modern classics. Except this time the kid gloves are off as they deliver more mayhem, death, and of course zombies, per page than any other book on the market! Wayne is a bounty hunter, but he has the bad luck to be one in the middle of a desert filled with the undead. But he has to bring in his man if he wants to get paid and the dead folks best get out of his way if they know what's good for 'em. But of course, being dead, they don't. Joe Lansdale's over-the-top dialogue and Truman's crisp lines make this book a must read for fans of Garth Ennis and Warren Ellis work, if you are not already a convert to the church of Lansdale.
Lansdale and Truman's Dead Folks will be available in March 2003 at your local comic shop. Please support your local stores. If you can't find Dead Folks locally, you may order it from our direct sales agent

We ate Twinkies and cupcakes and even though Charlie had told Hanson about my adventure at the chicken plant, I told it again, then I told them about the cruise. Charlie said, "Well, finally, you and Leonard are off to do something where the worst trouble you can get into is cutting a fart in the dining room." "Yeah," I said. "Ain't it grand?" Both Hap Collins and Leonard Pine are working as guards at a local poultry plant. By chance, after Leonard drops him off at his car, Hap hears a weak voice say help me and then "a whimper, as if a puppy were dying under an automobile tire." When he turns on his truck lights, he's horrified. A man is stomping on a young girl beyond the chain link fence that surrounds the parking lot. Hap, has a gun, but isn't willing to pull it out "I'd done that thing already and was wearing scars from that, filling my head nightly with dark bad dreams." So he climbs over the fence and he proceeds to fight with the assailant and it's one nasty fight.

I suppose there were some back then had money, but we weren't among them. The Depression was on. And if we had been one of those with money, there really wasn't that much to buy, outside of hogs, chickens, vegetables, and the staples, and since we raised the first three, with us it was the staples, and sometimes we bartered for them. Daddy farmed some, and where we lived wasn't so bad for growing things. The wind had blown away most of North and West Texas, along with Oklahoma, but the eastern part of Texas was lush with greenery and the soil was rich and there was enough rain so that things grew quick and hardy. Even during dry periods the soil tended to hold some moisture, and if a crop wasn't as good as it might be, it could still turn out. In fact, when the rest of Texas was tired out and gone to dust, East Texas would sometimes be subject to terrific rainstorms and even floods. We were more likely to lose a crop to dampness than to dryness. Daddy had a barbershop as well, and he ran it most days except Sunday and Monday, and was a community constable because nobody else wanted the job. For a time he had been justice of the peace as well, but he finally decided it was more than he wanted, and Jim Jack Formosa took on the justice of the peace position, and Daddy always said Jim Jack was a damn sight better at marrying and declaring people stone cold dead than he ever was.

Here comes Trudy back into Hap's life, thirty-six but looking ten years younger, with long blonde hair and legs that begin under her chin, and the kind of walk that'll make a man run his car off the road. Here comes trouble, says Leonard, and he's right. She was always trouble, but she had this laugh when she was happy in bed that could win Hap over every time. Trudy has a proposition: an easy two hundred thousand dollars, tax-free. It's just a simple matter of digging it up... Hap Collins and Leonard Pine, white and black, straight and gay, are the unlikeliest duo in crime fiction. Savage Season is their debut.

With Mojo Aforethought
An Interview with Joe R Lansdale
by Nick Gevers INTRODUCTION The publication in 2000 of Joe R. Lansdale's superb retrospective collection, High Cotton: Selected Stories , brings his remarkable career into an opportune focus. For two decades, Lansdale has been a prolific cult author, regaling a dedicated audience with tales expressive of an outrageous gory moralism. His fictional settings, always intensely and laconically authentic, range from the Wild West to alternate worlds to post-holocaust nightmares to the South's utterly seedy underbelly, but Texas is in all of them. Like Neal Barrett, Jr., Lansdale is a subversive Bard of Texas, capturing that state in its entirety and in its every particularity, in its wide surrealistic splendour and in its multiplex gritty intimacy. And like Barrett, he is, simply and universally, a superb storyteller. Joe Lansdale's stories, in all their brilliance, speak for themselves. But here is a glimpse of the man who wields that hypnotic voice, captured in an e-mail interview in August 2000.

(Golden Gryphon Press, $23.95, 267 pages, hardcover; published September 2000.) Back when such titles were fashionable, this collection would have been titled, simply, The Best of Joe R. Lansdale for this it certainly and deliberately is. "High Cotton" is a metaphor denoting the best of the authorial crop; the subtitle "Selected Stories" makes the project overt; and the tales assembled in this volume are clever and visceral, moral and terrifying, collectively a master class in suspenseful violent storytelling. It is impossible not to find outrage and provocation in High Cotton ; for, story by story, piece by piece, it anatomises with knowledgeable intimacy the horror perpetually latent in the twisted social landscape of Lansdale's home region, the Southwest; and the fact that this horror so often is purely psychological, the exhalation of human and not supernatural depravity, simply confirms the sinister accuracy of Lansdale's vision. This is a book of unrestrained murderous power. An experienced and prolific veteran of the Western, Crime, and Horror fields, Lansdale unites in his fictions the geographical specificity of the first with the grittiness of the second and the bloodthirstiness of the third.
