Title: Poem (no title) Description: An odd little item: a sheet of paper has been folded to provide two leaves measuring 2 3/4 x 3 18" each, like a small Christmas card. On the first side is this poem, in four lines: "This is the first thing / I have understood: / Time is the echo of an axe / Within a wood." Opened, the card reads "Happy Passed New Year". with a wooden toothpick glued to the reverse of the first sheet. On the last leaf is marked KTP / The Kitchen Table Press, crediting the poem to Philip Larken (misspelled). Undated, but the envelope, which had been sent possibly by publisher Michael Joseph,as noted on the envelope, to another bookseller, is postmarked 1990. Item # Add to your cart Please read book descriptions carefully. I write descriptions accurately, with a slight bias toward overdescribing faults, if any exist, so that you will know exactly what you are buying. I ship books anywhere, at approximate cost, which depends on weight, destination and means of shipping. In the U.S., books are normally sent via Priority mail, with insurance added for books over $50 in value. This charge is added to the cost of the book, and, in Connecticut, a 6% sales tax is added to the total. If you live in another country, please specify air or surface shipping. I can then quote postage costs. Books may be returned within a week of arrival for any reason. Shipping costs are not refundable unless the book is not as described.

Mit dem Manuskript muß er auch den Traum vom Wegerzählen seiner Sprachlosigkeit und dem Entkommen in jenes "wonderful 500-words-a-day on-the-Riviera life that beckons us all like an ignis fatuus " begraben; statt dessen entscheidet er sich für die lautlose Kärrnerarbeit des Bibliotheksdienstes, der ihn über die Stationen Leicester und Belfast 1955 als Leiter der Universitätsbiliothek im nordenglischen Hull ankommen läßt, seinem Fast-Zuhause für die folgenden dreißig Jahre, das er in "Here" fast liebevoll beschrieben hat.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Larkin, Philip Arthur English poet. His perfectionist, pessimistic verse appeared in The Less Deceived (1955), and in the later volumes The Whitsun Weddings (1964), and High Windows (1974) which confirmed him as one of the most powerful and influential of 20th-century English poets. After his death, his letters and other writings, which he had instructed should be destroyed, revealed an intolerance and misanthropy not found in his published material. From 1955 until his death he was librarian at the University of Hull. He edited The Oxford Book of 20th-Century English Verse Collected Poems was published in 1988.

Sacramentalism in the Poetry of Philip Larkin

A study of Philip Larkin's four volumes of poetry, The North Ship The Less Deceived The Whitsun Weddings (1964), and High Windows (1974), confirms that his poetry is "an affair of sanity, of seeing things as they are" ("Big Victims" 368). Typically his is a skeptical vision; indeed, he has been called "unillusioned, with a metaphysical zero in his bones" (Bedient 70). David Timms argues that Larkin's poetry as a whole "sees life as a bleak, sometimes horrifying business" (97). Ian Hamilton agrees and adds that the biggest problem with Larkin's poetry is its "rather narrow range of negative attitudes" (102). Eric Homberger calls him "the saddest heart in the post-war supermarket" (74), while Geoffrey Thurley writes about Larkin's "central dread of satisfaction" (145). It must be admitted that there is a strong current of skepticism running through Larkin's poetry. In "Kick up the fire, and let the flames break loose" from

    Larkin, Philip Arthur (1922-1985)
Born in Coventry and educated at King Henry VIII School there, Philip Larkin first showed his literary talent in regular contributions to the school magazine, The Coventrian . He gained a first class honours degree in English at St John's College, Oxford, in 1943. He then became a librarian, working successively in the public library at Wellington, and the libraries of Leicester University College and, from 1950, Queen's University, Belfast. In 1955 he was appointed Librarian of the University of Hull, where he remained until his death at the age of 63 in 1985. His first poem to achieve a national circulation was 'Ultimatum' in The Listener in 1940. Other poems were published in anthologies of Oxford poetry before his first personal collection, The North Ship , appeared in 1945. This was followed by two novels, Jill (1946) and A girl in winter (1947). A lean period followed after the rejection by publishers of In the Grip of Light (1948), but he continued to write, and his next collection

Is the new Philip Larkin poem worthy of publication?
    By Eric McHenry
Posted Monday, February 10, 2003, at 11:46 AM PT
One of my all-time favorite photo captions appears in A Writer s Life , Andrew Motion's outstanding 1993 biography of Philip Larkin. It's a picture of Larkin's secretary, Betty Mackereth, in cat's-eye glasses and a hairdo that makes her head look as though someone has dropped a giant dinner roll on it. The caption reads, simply, "Betty Mackereth, 'loaf-haired', c. 1965" — a reference to the "loaf-haired secretary" of the Larkin poem "Toads Revisited." I became especially fond of the picture when I learned that Larkin and Mackereth had an affair 10 years after it was taken. The thought of Larkin, who once described himself, accurately, as "an egg ... with goggles," and his loaf-haired secretary suddenly discovering a mutual attraction when both were in their 50s is delightful to entertain—if not too vividly. Motion believed that the affair, because it was convenient and free of drama, "could not provide [Larkin] with the creative tension he needed to produce poems." But recent events have proved otherwise. In June, someone poking around in a rubbish tip (the English can make even a garbage dump sound inoffensive) turned up a notebook containing drafts of two late poems and a freestanding quatrain no one had ever seen before: "We met at the end of the party/ When all the drinks were dead/ And all the glasses dirty:/ 'Have this that's left', you said." When a columnist for the

Eliot’s The Waste Land ) were simultaneously published, after long years of elaborate shaping and reshaping, Philip Larkin is a typical representative of desperado literature, the timorous literature of “all has been tried, abandon all hopes of originality all ye who enter here.” Which does not mean that Philip Larkin actually gave up striving for originality. Quite the reverse, he was even prouder of his novelty (peculiarity, at least) than his predecessors. Like all his desperado fellows, he felt he was an independent and unique world, a poet who would not imitate and would never be imitated. Yet, he cherished his uniqueness in secret. Unlike Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath, Alan Brownjohn and many others, Philip Larkin was a shy poetic voice, whose imaginings often ran wild, but whose words took a long time in ripening and acquiring poise. He wrote poetry, fiction and essays. He only published four volumes of verse. A 1965 Introduction to The North Ship , revised edition, discloses the particular irony that tinges Philip Larkin’s reticence versus words. More often than not, this preeminently sensitive poet is unwilling to commit himself to literature. An interview with Peter Orr reveals him again as a high-strung poet, whose fondness of silence bursts from time to time, and then it gives birth to poems which are a constant source of amazement to the poet himself.
