Dr. Erika Klusener, associate professor of modern languages and cultures, will be a speaker at the Else Lasker-Schuler Symposium on Oct. 20. The symposium, scheduled Oct. 19-21, is sponsored by the department of German at Penn State University, commemorates the 50th anniversary of the death of Else Lasker-Schuler (1869-1945), a German/Jewish, expatriate poet/writer. Klusener's presentation is "Else Lasker-Schuler: An Opalescent Figure in 20th Century Literary History." Thirteen other speakers, a song recital and poetry reading, and a book exhibit are also scheduled.
Klusener is a well-known expert on Lasker-Schuler. During a recent sabbatical she wrote a book about Lasker-Schuler published in Germany. Her research was funded by the Cultural Endowment of the Federal States of Germany.
VAVREK COORDINATES CONFERENCE Dr. Bernard Vavrek, professor of library science, was the coordinator for the Great American Bookmobile Conference held Sept. 21-22 in Grantville, near Harrisburg. The conference was sponsored by the Commonwealth Libraries of Pennsylvania in cooperation with the Center for the Study of Rural Librarianship at Clarion University. Over 175 people from 29 different states attended the bi-annual conference, along with seven bookmobile manufacturers. There are presently 1,000 bookmobiles in the United States, including 15 in Pennsylvania. They are found not only in rural areas but in metropolitan areas such as San Francisco and Los Angeles. The keynote address "And What King of Futures do Bookmobiles Face?" was presented by John Philip, supervisor of field operations (retired) for the State Library of Ohio, Columbus, Ohio.

Governor Tom Ridge's proposed budget calls for no increase over the current 1994-95 fiscal year funding level for the State System of Higher Education, but would provide for a modest 1.7 percent increase if funding from the proposed new Tuition Challenge Grant program is accepted by the State System Board of Governors. The new Tuition Challenge Grant program would provide approximately $100 per full-time Pennsylvania resident student if the System agrees to limit tuition increases to no more than 4.5 percent over the previous year's level. The new challenge grant would provide approximately $456,400 in new resources for Clarion University.

Igael Tumarkin
Igael Tumarkin is undoubtedly one of those Israeli artists who feel the strongest affinity with the European heritage in general and that of Germany in particular. This affinity extends beyond the field of art to literature, theater, philosophy and history. No other artist has dedicated so many "tributes" and dialogues to German painters, architects, sculptors, writers, poets and philosophers. Suffise it to recall his works for Heine, Kleist, Brecht, Walter Benjamin, Paul Celan and Heiner Muller, who are now joined by Else Lasker-Schuler.
In an artist of "manifests" like Tumarkin, even this affinity constitutes a challenge: to provincialism, to cultural autism, to "coterie" art and perhaps even to the excessive influence of American art. On the credit side, however, we find an extraordinary openness, a willingness to enter into dialogue with any work of art provided it has met with his artistic criteria or opened up new creative awareness: from the art of the Renaissance through the African mud huts, the scrap piles of the desert Bedouins or the ritual sculptures of Stonehenge or the Incas, to the work of Van Gogh and Brancusi.
110 x 90 cm 100 x 90 cm Tumarkin's highly expressive paintings for Else Lasker-Schuler's poems, as well as the death mask he cast from the original mask, are as scorching and branding as the lines of Lasker-Schuler herself: "I, a scorching desert wind, have chilled and assumed an image". By favouring the assertive, manly tone over the soft outpouring of her poems, Tumarkin has not only remained faithful to himself but has exposed an element both in Lasker-Schuler's writing and person, which could have easily been overlooked.

http://www.online.co.il/kaete/Famous_People.CFM
Portraits of Famous People Marcus painted many portraits of authors, politicians, artists, and other people of note. Her portraits strive to express the emotions and inner world of her subjects, but not at the expense of remaining faithful to the person's features. She would study the character of the person she was about to paint and take an interest in the person's life and experiences. This is illustrated, for example by the portrait of Else Lasker-Schuler (1869-1945), a German Jewish poet and artist, who fled the Nazis in 1933, visited Jerusalem in 1934 and 1937, and finally settled there in 1939. Lasker-Schuler was a complex personality, given to depressive moods, mostly living in a world of make-believe, always wearing a mask. She granted her friends and loved ones, as well as herself, a gift names that "suited their personality." She would wander in the street, wearing strange and colorful clothing, with symbols of different religions painted in harmony on her cheeks. In Marcus' painting we see a woman in a red garment with a fox collar, a severe and sad expression on her face. She is standing in front of a mirror, holding a mask attached to a hat in her hands. She has finished putting on her make-up and fixing her hair, and is contemplating which mask to wear to go out. The mask reflected in the mirror is smiling and young, an "improved" version of herself. This portrait can be compared with two self-portraits by the poet, one of which is The

An Israeli epic. Two women seek out a new life in the Holy Land in this beautiful, powerful portrait of the birth of Israel. Berlin Jerusalem tells the story of two women: Else Lasker-Schuler, a German expressionist poet, and Mania Shohat, a Russian revolutionary. Their journeys intersect in Jerusalem, both a real city and the mythical place of their dreams. They shudder at the reality but remain committed to making a better world. Gorgeously photographed, this is a feast for the senses and a provocative commentary on the conflict in the Middle East today. German, Hebrew and other languages, with English subtitles.

If one could identify a "source" of Lasker-Schüler's writings it is the Bible. This becomes evident in her Hebraische Balladen (Hebrew Ballads), which appeared in a small booklet in 1913. They are devoted to the great figures of the Old Testament Abraham to Ruth, Esther, David and Jonathan and to her people, from whom she felt estranged but at the same time intimately bound. The Hebrew Ballads were meant to remind her bourgeois German Jewish contemporaries of the Jews' great history, of which she was so proud and which she conveyed in a powerful and poetic language. Mein Volk ("My People"), a poem in this collection, evokes her situation as a modern poet of an ancient people that has lost touch with the life-giving energy of its great past.

25 years of German-Israeli Scientific Cooperation at the Hebrew University. FRANZ ROSENZWEIG RESEARCH CENTER FOR GERMAN-JEWISH LITERATURE AND CULTURAL HISTORY
The Franz Rosenzweig Research Center for German-Jewish Literature and Cultural History was established in 1991 as a framework for German and Israeli scholars for studies on the intercultural relations between Germans and Jews from the Middle Ages down to the present day. A uniquely broad interdisciplinary approach encompassing cultural history, comparative literature, history of art, musicology, philosophy, theology, psychoanalysis, and science, was adopted. The Center draws on various archival and manuscript collections in Jerusalem, which provide a rich source of historiogeographical information.
The two main areas of research of the Center's members are: the Age of Enlightenment and the confrontation between Jewish tradition and European culture; and the interaction between German and Jewish culture in the twentieth century, particularly from the perspective of German-Jewish interculturality. Among the research projects initiated by the Center is the first critical-historical edition of the works of the German-Jewish writer Else Lasker-Schuler.
The Center places special emphasis on encouraging young researchers in relevant areas. About ten scholarships a year are awarded to outstanding doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars from Israel and overseas working on aspects of German-Jewish interculturality. Bimonthly inter-disciplinary workshops are run by the Center for these students, and their proceedings are published.
