"When I'm writing I don't think about whether the story is going to be happy or unhappy. That is how I see that particular kind of relationship working out. The logical conclusion, to me. And so, it isn't happy. But I don't know if that'll change. I suppose none of my stories have ever had happy endings. Sometimes ambiguous endings. But I don't set out to write an unhappy story or a happy story." When the camera comes out, it's like a curtain drops. Gone is the engaging woman-child that I've feel I've come to know a little bit over the two-odd hours we've been talking. She has been replaced with the pouting artiste. Is it a pose or just protectiveness? I'm not sure. I only know that it prevents me from sharing her smile with you. And I'm a little sad about that: Evelyn Lau has a wonderful smile.
Lau has a lot to smile about. A difficult beginning has provided generous fodder in a career that thrives on challenges. Lau's first book

ENFANT TERRIBLE OF CANADIAN POETRY SENDS A MIXED MESSAGE
by Roxanne Davies Although I had read about Evelyn Lau, author, poet and fiction writer, read her poetry, viewed the CBC docudrama entitled Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid, a chronicle of her life of drugs and prostitution and her development into a published writer, I had never seen her in person. When the invitation to attend a fundraiser for one-year old Persimmons Theatre came along, I jumped at the chance. With a sense of voyeuristic anticipation, I headed over to Granville and 16th to take part in the literary evening. What was I expecting? I wondered. I didn't count many prostitutes (former or otherwise) as my friends, although I did know of some middle class wives who may perhaps fall in that category. Sad and unfulfilled, bought and paid for. But if I was expecting a young and wanton female with the imprints of men's hands still impressed on her still young body, what I saw was a slightly chubby, pretty 20 -something, dressed in a modest black checkered Bermuda shorts, black sweater, and sensible shoes.

Rain slants through the casement window, black stains the brocade wall. Behind the gag, your pink tongue gurgles. I retrieve pins, razors from the debris at my feet like I would stones or shells at the beach. I clip a lock of hair, a nipple. I hold a flame to the candelabra. Open a bottle of resiny wine. I bend to kiss the pulse at your wrist and throat. In The House of Slaves is Evelyn Lau's third book of poetry. Packed with vivid and visceral images, pushing the power of language, Evelyn Lau acts as our guide into a bleak world of sex and power, pain and pleasure. Bold and audacious, Lau continues to explore the terrain of her previous collection, Oedipal Dreams, but dares to go further, into the world of bondage and torture. Lau presents terrifying yet romantic acts of love with brutal honesty. Evelyn Lau was short-listed for the Governor General's Award for Poetry at the age of 21, the youngest person ever nominated for the award. Lau's first book was the bestselling Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid, which has been translated into a number of languages, as have her other books, including Fresh Girls, Other Women and Choose Me. Lau's poetry has appeared in many journals, as well as in Best American Poetry and the definitive Canadian anthology Breathing Fire.

by Merri Lisa Johnson January 2000 Postfeminist Poetry: Evelyn Lau's Oedipal Dreams (Story of My Youngest Sister) My youngest sister brought me a book of poetry last week as a way of trying to establish an adult relationship with me by sharing something we both enjoy. The book was Oedipal Dreams by Evelyn Lau. I was struck by the cover-the author's face a white apparition emerging from intense darkness, blackish red lips, full like pockets of blood. This book seems to seduce me at first glance. I have been curious, lately, about contemporary women's poetry, wanting to study it both as a scholar and a writer, so I started here. I read the back cover: "these are raw, angry poems." I flipped through the pages to see if my sister had marked anything. She had. One page with its corner flipped down, the poem "Father." I began to see my sister's attraction to this work. As I read through the first third of Lau's poems, I noticed repeated images: needles, broken glass, wounded flesh, ashes, amitriptyline. The book's atmosphere reminds me of a movie my other sister, the middle sister, lent me last month, "Gia," starring Angelina Jolie, another dark work with characters desperate for love, settling for heroin. I dimly recognize this world my sisters conjure around them, remember seeking out this sort of pained art to deal in some tangible way with my own hurt. For me (as for many) it was

October 3, 2001 The Canadian Consulate General is pleased to announce that Canadian author Evelyn Lau will visit Australia for the Brisbane Writers' Festival, October 18-24 Born in Vancouver on July 2, 1971, Evelyn Lau is considered one of Canada's most talented writers, but her journey to acclaim has not been easy. Her first book Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid , chronicles Evelyn's experiences on the streets of Vancouver after running away from home at the age of 15. The book quickly became a bestseller when published in 1989. Not only was it translated into German, French and Spanish, Runaway was also made into a TV movie for CBC Television Canada entitled The Diary of Evelyn Lau in 1994. Disproving claims that she was a 'one shot' literary success, Evelyn has since published three collections of poetry, You Are Not Who You Claim Oedipal Dreams (1992) which was nominated for the Governor-General's Literary Award and In the House of Slaves (1994) as well as a collection of short-stories entitled Fresh Girls and Other Stories (1993). Youngest Gov. General Nominee ponders future
Martin Wallace / Canadian University Press
At the age of 28, Evelyn Lau is considering giving up writing. While she's probably just going to take a "hiatus," the funny thing is that if Lau did give up writing at such a young age, she could do so after a career that would put many older writers to shame. Since her first book "Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid," was published in 1989, Lau has published three books of poetry, two collections of short stories and a novel. Her 1992 collection of poems "Oedipal Dreams," was nominated for the Governor General's Award, making her at 21, the youngest poet ever nominated. Her latest collection of short stories "Choose Me," sits comfortably on the Canadian fiction bestseller lists. I interviewed Lau in the hospitality suite of the Winnipeg International Writers Festival at the downtown Radisson Hotel. It was a bustling place, full of smoking, flustered volunteers shouting into cell phones. The interview was momentarily interrupted by someone handing Lau a glass of orange juice and ice. Coming from a background where writing is, to put it mildly, not very well regarded, I confess I was a bit taken aback.

    by Evelyn Lau
Doubleday Canada, 1999. Reviewed by Michael Bryson Evelyn Lau dedicated her last book, the novel Other Women , to John Updike with whom she admitted in reviews to being "half in love with." The desire was at least partly stylistic. Lau has always written like an angel. In her new short story collection, Choose Me , however, Lau falls into an all too common blunder: beautiful prose expressing less than interesting ideas. It's a fault that befalls many writers known as much for their rhetorical skill as for the substance of their writing (Updike is one). Lau's writing career began with a bang with the release of Runaway , her diary from her days as a teenaged prostitute, which was quickly followed by the release of three volumes of poetry ranging from the gritty to the sharply polished. Her early writing, including the excellent Fresh Girls , her first short story collection, was hotwired by its lack of sentimentality and its almost documentary vision. In her later work, Lau has attempted to sketch on a larger sociological canvas, following mentors like Updike, John Cheever, even F. Scott Fitzgerald, as some critics have noted.
