His work is an early example of the genre of horror fiction Sheridan Le Fanu was born in Dublin to a noble family. His grandmother Alice Sheridan Le Fanu and her brother, Richard Brinsley Sheridan (J. Sheridan Le Fanu's great-uncle), were both playwrights. He studied law at Trinity College in Dublin and passed the bar . But Le Fanu did not take up the legal profession, instead becoming a journalist. Thenceforth until his death he published stories. Sheridan Le Fanu Spalatro: Two Italian Tales There follows a well-developed episode set around one of those murderous wayside inns so beloved of popular nineteenth century literature. Le Fanu describes the murder of one of the guests with relish. It is not quite up to the famous trepanation scene in The House by the Church-Yard, Having escaped the inn, Spalatro finds himself at Carnival in Rome, where he indulges himself in rather generalized debauchery. We are to take Spalatro at his word when he tells us, Do we not detect a wry smile in those last five words? This tone is followed up a few paragraphs later by lines that seems to echo that tone: Miles Stribling's Introduction is informative, especially as it relates to the publication of Le Fanu's works in periodicals, but leans very heavily on W. J Sheridan Le Fanu home chapters timeline index The ghost story is always in danger of becoming a morality tale. By definition, at the end of it, something horrible happens to someone, and it is always too tempting to find some reason for that horrible happening. The best ghost stories don't necessarily do away with the moralising, but often make the punishment far greater than the moral lapse demands. An excellent example of this is Sheridan Le Fanu 's "Green Tea", in which, after a little overindulgence in strong green tea, Reverend Jennings somehow calls from the netherworld (or the depths of his psyche) a grinning, monkey-like demon that only he can see. And all it does it watch him, leering. "Green Tea" is one of several cases related by Doctor Hesselius, whose comforting scientific presence throws a little light on the causes of Jennings' sufferings and does absolutely nothing to prevent his death. Hesselius (becoming van Helsing), together with another of Le Fanu's tales, that of the female vampire "Carmilla" influenced Bram Stoker 's most famous book, and

This mysterious subject he treats, in that Essay, with his usual learning and acumen, and with remarkable directness and condensation. It will form but one volume of the series of that extraordinary man's collected papers.
