Review by Aaron Hughes *QUASI-SPOILER WARNING*
This review does not give away the ending or any plot twists of The Telling . It does discuss some of the philosophical issues at the heart of the novel. If you prefer to come to The Telling fresh and have all of LeGuin's thoughts unfold for you as you read the novel, you may prefer to read The Telling first, and then to come back to this review and let me know what you think.

This marks the start of the modern fantasy. Ursula K(roeber) Le Guin (1929-) debuted 1966 with the first part of a science fiction-trilogy: . In 1968 the first book in her most known fantasyseries were published: Earthsea

Meet the high priestess of science fiction
    July 27, 1997
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us Ursula K. LeGuin is the prolific high priestess of science fiction. She has written more than 16 novels, four collections of poetry, 10 children's books, several screenplays and more. She collects awards like jewelry but wears them modestly. LeGuin, 67, was born in Berkeley, the daughter of two anthropologists. She attended Radcliffe and earned her master's from Columbia. She currently lives in Oregon, her home for many years. She has been a writer from her earliest years and her short stories and poems are anthologized regularly. "Nebula Awards 31" is a collection of works chosen by Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and it includes a LeGuin short story, "Solitude." This story explores themes that LeGuin has focused on recently: love and sex in a fractured society with minimal community bonds. She came to UC Davis earlier this month. She chose to speak to a capacity crowd on a hot summer night about a book she wrote several years ago, "Always Coming Home." "This is my most California book," she said. In it, she wanted to explore the formation of a new society from a native point of view.

    Introduction
Le Guin is one of the few old masters who is a woman. She specializes in almost poetic epics about people caught in situations that bring out something new in themselves they never would otherwise have discovered. This new thing can almost never be expressed in fewer than 100 words. Le Guin also likes to play with culture shock, and with the interface between people from different backgrounds. Essentially, however, she is an optimist, the flip side of Octavia Butler 's coin.

    Ursula K. Le Guin

How have the great fantasy writers been influenced by Tolkien? What is their response to his work? Sometimes cautious, we discover. Ursula Le Guin is the most influential writers of a kind of fantasy and SF that is both lyrical, thoughtful and motivated by a strong social conscience; fantasy which does not leave the heart and mind locked outside the covers of the book. She pioneered a notion of what fantasy and science fiction could be and do, and in order to do that she was grateful not to fall entirely under the spell of Tolkien before she could develop her own voice. She was twenty-five and already forming her own direction as a writer when the Rings appeared in her local library. Le Guin was cautious. She tried to ignore them. They must be dull, in those beige covers, she told herself. Finally she gave in. In an essay that appears in The Language of the Night , she wrote about her response to first reading The Lord of the Rings Rings And yet she was glad not to have read Tolkien too soon: Le Guin was getting to the point where she knew her own mind as a writer, so:
