Le Guin syntyi Kalifornian Berkeleyssä vuonna 1929. Hänen isänsä oli antropologi ja äitinsä kirjailija. Ursula meni naimisiin historioitsija Charles A. Le Guinin kanssa vuonna 1953. He asuvat nykyisin Oregonissa ja heillä on kolme lasta ja kolme lastenlasta. Ursula K. Le Guin oppi kirjoittamaan jo viisivuotiaana.

the seasons of the ansarac by Ursula K. Le Guin
I talked for a long time once with an old Ansar. I met him at his Interplanary Hostel, which is on a large island far out in the Great Western Ocean, well away from the migratory routes of the Ansarac. It is the only place visitors from other planes are allowed, these days. From time immemorial, he said, the Ansarac had followed a Way. Madan, he called it. The way of my people, the way things are done, the way things are, the way to go, the way that is hidden in the word always : like ours, his word held all those meanings. "Then we strayed from our Way," he said. "For a little while. Now again we do as we have always done." The Ansarac had a somewhat different choice to make than we did, perhaps a more limited one. But it has its interest. Their world is farther from a larger sun than ours, so, though its spin and tilt are much the same as Earth's, its year lasts about twenty-four of our years. And the seasons are correspondingly large and leisurely, each of them six of our years long. On every plane and in every climate that has a spring, spring is the breeding time, when new life is born; and for creatures whose life is only a few seasons or a few years, early spring is mating time, too, when new life begins. So it is for the Ansarac, whose life span is, in their terms, three years.

A Left-Handed Commencement Address by Ursula K. Le Guin
Author Mills College Graduation - 1983 I want to thank the Mills College Class of '83 for offering me a rare chance: to speak aloud in public in the language of women. Maybe we've had enough words of power and talk about the battle of life. Maybe we need some words of weakness. Instead of saying now that I hope you will all go forth from this ivory tower of college into the Real World and forge a triumphant career or at least help your husband to and keep our country strong and be a success in everything - instead of talking about power, what if I talked like a woman right here in public? It won't sound right. It's going to sound terrible. What if I said what I hope for you is first, if only if you want kids, I hope you have them. Not hordes of them. A couple, enough. I hope they're beautiful. I hope you and they have enough to eat, and a place to be warm and clean in, and friends, and work you like doing. Well, is that what you went to college for? Is that all? What about success? Success is somebody else's failure. Success is the American Dream we can keep dreaming because most people in most places, including thirty million of ourselves, live wide awake in the terrible reality of poverty. No, I do not wish you success. I don't even want to talk about it. I want to talk about failure.

    The Telling (Book Synopsis)
by Ursula K. Le Guin's Buy from Amazon Page 1 of 1 ABOUT THIS BOOK The Telling (Harcourt, September 2000, $24.00) is set in the Hainish world of her two most famous novels, The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed. One of Le Guin’s favorite literary devices is to place a stranger in a strange culture, a tactic she uses in her utopia fantasies to help mediate between the reader’s reality and that of her characters. Unlike her Earthsea novels, which are pure fantasy, the Hainish novels are set in our galaxy and cover approximately 2500 years of future history among the various settlements colonized by the Hain, an original race that seeded other habitable planets in our universe, including Earth, with human life. In The Telling, Sutty, a young woman from Earth trained on Hain to be an Observor for the interstellar Ekumen, is sent on her first mission to the planet Aka. Expecting to find a peace-loving society based on an ancient belief system similar to Taoism and known as The Telling, she finds instead that The Telling has been banned and the culture of Aka radically transformed into a restrictive society that worships pure science. The entire cultural and religious history of the Akans has been virtually erased. For the first time in fifty years, Sutty will be the first offworlder allowed to leave Dovza City, the capital, and journey to Okzat-Ozkat, a small city in the high mountains where remnants of “antiscientific cult activities” may exist.

by Ursula K. Le Guin Harcourt Brace - 0-15-100567-2 - 264pp/September 2000 Reviewed by Steven H Silver Ursula K. Le Guin returns to the universe of Hain with another anthropological story, this time focusing on the planet Aka. Aka is a world which was technologically backward until it received messages from Earth and managed to jumpstart its economy and technology, but at a cost. Sutty is one of only four non Akans on the planet, sent from Earth and the Ekumen to study Akan society. What Sutty discovers is that in the time it has taken her to arrive on Aka, the new regime has completely repressed all of the traditional cultures which had existed in the various parts of Aka. Not only are the differing religious beliefs suppressed, but the different dialects are deemed subversive. Sutty is surprised to discover that she may be the only person on the entire planet who can still read the language that was written only a generation before. Sutty's exploration really takes off when she is permitted to leave Dovza City, the capital of the new state, and travel to the hinterlands where some remnants of the older culture might still exist. Once there, Sutty not only begins to see the older culture and understand it, she also begins to accept it and try to find her own place within the culture. This allows Le Guin to present the culture from both an insider's and an outsider's point of view.
