The New Textbase
Julia Flanders
This summer marks a pivotal point in the Women Writers Project's history: the "thawing" of the WWP textbase after a four-year freeze. In 1994, when the Text Encoding Initiative Guidelines were released, the WWP decided that the most efficient way to bring the textbase into conformity with the new guidelines would be to freeze the textbase in its current state, convert it to match the new guidelines, and then resume textbase development, thus minimizing the work of updating. Accordingly we produced printouts of all our existing texts (with all their flaws) so that we could continue to provide copies for public use, and then began the long process of developing a modern TEI-based encoding system adapted to the needs of early modern women's writing. Two years ago, the encoding system was sufficiently solid that we could resume encoding new texts; all that remained was to complete the conversion of the old textbase, and develop a new system of printing texts for distribution. Since then, we have encoded over 70 new texts, which we plan to make available by the end of the summer. We will also be issuing corrected, updated printouts of our previously encoded texts, to replace the ones you've all been using for so long. More information on the new texts and how to order them will be available on our web site during the summer. Check our

From Peasant to Poet By Mohammad Vaziri A servant write verses! say’s Madam Du Bloom; It is amazing how simple couplets like these can so clearly demonstrate the life which the aspiring women writers had to lead. The poem perfectly demonstrates the sarcastic attitude with which their efforts were perceived. Even other women saw their plight as meaningless and trivial. Nonetheless, the women used these dubious attitudes to create such powerful works. They were able to look beyond the enclosures of social class and physical beauty in order to understand the intangible gifts of a person. In fact, many of the women wrote poorly of their own physical appearance. As Mary Leapor, another peasant poet, writes of herself: And apron ragged as the Muse The female writers of that time were more concerned with inner beauty and strength, than with outer qualities. They had overcome too many serious obstacles to care about such petty traits. Mary Leapor was a perfect example of this poetic quality. ‘Mrs. Leapor from a Child delighted in reading, and particularly Poetry, but had few Oppurtunities of precuring any Books of that kind’ (Greene 9).

ENG442Y (C18th women and poetry): second term schedule and seminar subjects Schedule and deadlines for second term Weekly themes Detailed list of poems
In second term, you'll be giving two more seminar presentations. The first will be on one of the subjects listed below; the second will be on your work in progress on your research papers
The script of each seminar is due, as always, the Friday after you present. It can be in point form, but please provide a full bibliography of primary and secondary works cited, and please give page numbers for books and articles and line numbers for your poem.
Subject areas for seminar 3
As before, your seminar should present a focussed, engaging argument, not just a summary of one poem. If you're focussing on one poem or poet, try to contextualize it. Continue to contextualize your ideas in current critical scholarship: the library tour will help you find appropriate articles and books. Possible poems are listed farther down this page.

The business of literature
Report 1) covered the social and economic influences that bore on women's ability to both write and publish. The same historical climate which saw the rise into print of unprecedented numbers of women was also the same one which saw the expansion of writing's business and commercial aspects. I didn't draw any definite conclusions from this except to suggest that women were economic units and that as such they were uniquely positioned to write ABOUT the business of literature.
- They tended not to be so satirical because their position was so tenuous. (at least in published work, though there were exceptions)
-it jeopardized their status as marriageable - a tangent but an interesting one- therefore they tended NOT to write, or else to curtail themselves
Moving along... I looked at Anne Finch's 'The Miser and the Poet' as an example of the conflicts women faced in the arena of values as they grappled with issues of fame and money. It was a bit of an allegory, remember?!
I also looked at Phyllis Wheatley's 'To Mycenas' as an example of the Augustan ideal of literary patronage untainted by commercialism ie. conflated totally with poetic inspiration: Mycenas becomes the speaker's 'Muse'.
