Eighteenth-Century Literature: Modes and Genres
Description:
We will approach the expanding field of eighteenth-century texts from the literary-historical perspective of genre, studying the role of literary kinds in classifying, evaluating, and indeed creating what counts as literature and specific types of literature. We will explore the way forms for writing poetry and prose allowed authors to innovate carefully while remaining anchored in tradition; how men and women writers handled the same genres; which genres survive and why. Throughout the readings we will learn the importance of decorum, of choosing a fit style for different subjects and audiences. Though we will not include the novel, we will consider other kinds of prose, including the essay.
Required Text:
Demaria, Robert ed. British Literature 1640-1789: An Anthology
Secondary Reserve Texts
This class is encouraged to explore and use over 25 works on reserve, shared with the graduate class (ENG 662), including the following topics: history, general studies of Eighteenth-Century literature, satire, the letter, the essay, and books on individual authors and works. Cheese, by Willem Elsschot
Written in Dutch, first published in 1933, and described by its English publishers as "Edam's great moment in world literature", this is a minor comic classic. Frans Laarmans, the archetypal "little man", becomes the agent for a Dutch cheese company, takes leave from his work as a shipping clerk, and attempts to shift 10,000 Edams. Elsschot was the pseudonym of Alfons De Ridder. He worked in advertising.

Literary Patronage in England, 1650–1800
Dustin Griffin
In stock This is the first comprehensive study of the system of literary patronage in early modern England and it demonstrates that far from declining by 1750 - as many commentators have suggested - the system persisted, albeit in altered forms, throughout the eighteenth century. Combining the perspectives of literary, social and political history, Dustin Griffin lays out the workings of the patronage system and shows how authors wrote within that system, manipulating it to their advantage or resisting the claims of patrons by advancing counter-claims of their own. Professor Griffin describes the cultural economics of patronage and argues that literary patronage was in effect always ‘political’. Chapters on individual authors, including Dryden, Swift, Pope and Johnson, as well as Edward Young, Richard Savage, Mary Leapor and Charlotte Lennox, address the author’s role in the system, the rhetoric of dedications and the larger poetics of patronage.
Contents
1. Introduction; 2. The cultural economics of literary patronage; 3. The politics of patronage; 4. John Dryden; 5. Jonathan Swift; 6. Alexander Pope; 7. Edward Young and Richard Savage; 8. Mary Leapor and Charlotte Lennox; 9. Samuel Johnson; 10. The persistence of patronage; 11. Conclusion.
