physique." Friedrich Nietzsche, 1844-1900, philosophe allemand. Humains, trop humains. Aphorisme 390. Trad. A. M. Desrousseaux. Will Cuppy

    Leautaud history
    [Fours]
The Leautaud family originates from the valley of Fours St. Laurent in the southern part of the French Alps. Fours St. Laurent resides on the road in a narrow valley which connects the town of Barcelonnette to the Mediterrean coast and Nice via the route over the Col de la Cayolle. This route didn't exist until 1930 so all the traffic was done via small trails, over the pass called Col de Fours (2500m) over the mountains to Barcelonnette. Nowadays Fours and the smaller hamlets in the valley are mostly occupied by some tourists during the summer. During winter there are just a few inhabitants since the route over the passes is closed for all traffic because of the snow.
    [Mexico]
The people in the valley of Fours St. Laurent lived from herding sheep and small agriculture during summer and the making of cloths from wool and linnen in wintertime. These cloths were taken to Barcelonnette and sold there. When Barcelonnette got more connected to the outside world (e.g. by coach) the people traveled from Barcelonnette to all over the world to sell their wool and linnen. Especially in the 19th century several more wealthier families from the valley of Barcelonnette (like the Belons and Arnauds) moved to Mexico to start large stores there. They emigrated a lot of people from the valley of Barcelonnette to work in their stores in Mexico. The crossing to Mexico was payed by their employers, but the trip home had to be earned by themselves, therefor only the people who made their fortune in Mexico returned to the valley.
