http://www.sip.ie/sip019I/led.html
Francis Ledwidge was born in Slane on 19th August, 1887. He left school at fourteen and took up various labouring jobs, but poetry was his first love. At twenty-four, he finally received the acclaim his poetry so richly deserved. He sent his notebook of poems to Lord Dunsany who became his mentor. He had his first volume of fifty poems entitled "Songs of the Field" published in 1915. He fell in love with a local girl Ellie Vaughey but she rejected him for another. His rejection in love, his patriotic nature and his innocence, probably all combined with the poet's spontaneous nature, convinced him to enlist in the Royal Enniskillen Fusiliers. Only he can have known for sure. What is certain however, is that the poet became a soldier and experienced the horrors of World War 1. He wrote two hundred odd poems and only nine mentioned the war in any degree. Of those most describe some isolated moment of beauty that had escaped the carnage of war. He fought in France and was killed at the battle of Ypres on 31st July, 1917. Although buried in Paschendale, his spirit is in Slane. Francis the student.

THOMAS McDONAGH H e shall not hear the bittern cry
In the wild sky, where he is lain,
Nor voices of the sweeter birds,
Above the wailing of the rain. N or shall he know when loud March blows
Thro' slanting snows her fanfare shrill,
Blowing to flame the golden cup
Of many an upset daffodil. B ut when the Dark Cow leaves the moor
And pastures poor with greedy weeds
Perhaps he'll hear her low at morn
Lifting her horn in pleasant meads. THOMAS McDONAGH, F.Ledwidge, 5 May 1916.
Among the leaders of the rebellion in Dublin were some close friends to Francis Ledwidge. Francis was shocked to hear that they were executed in the Richmond barracks, where he had his training as a soldier. He wrote this poem to the memory of his fellow poet Thomas McDonagh. Nevermore singing
Will you go now,
Wearing wild moonlight
On your brow.
The moon's white mood In your silver mind Is all forgotten. Words of wind From off the hedgerow After rain, You do not hear them; They are vain. There is a linnet Craves a song, And you returning Before long. Now who will tell her, Who can say On what great errand You are away? You whose kindred Were hills of Meath, Who sang the lane-rose From her sheath, What voice will cry them The grief at dawn Or say to the blackbird You are gone? The Passion of the Beast
Boston: The Stratford Co., 1928. 30611; PQ3; GL; TDB. An unusual novel, about the strange hold a gorilla exerts on an aristocratic French family. In Paris, William St. Clair meets Armand Dumesnil, who presently asks the American to accompany him to his family estate. There St. Clair meets Armand's beautiful sister, Yvonne, and learns that there is some mystery surrounding the family. He comes to learn that their father, Hippolyte Dumesnil, while on safari, had seen a female gorilla and her children killed by his bearers. He prevented them from killing her mate, whom he captured and named Melek. Melek soon thereafter saved Dumesnil's life, and was brought to live on the family estate. Dumesnil had come to believe that the lives of his own children, Armand and Yvonne, were owed to the ape, who proved to be extremely jealous of any attentions to Yvonne.

The Complete Poems of Francis Ledwidge
    Francis Ledwidge
An Irish nationalist and poet, Ledwidge was the protégé of Lord Dunsany, to whom he sent a volume of his poetry in 1911. He signed up with the Irish Volunteers to fight with the British in WWI and while serving abroad on active duty a volume of fifty of his poems published as Songs of the Field. While recovering wounded in Manchester in 1916 he received news of the Easter Rising in Dublin and the executions of nationalist leaders that followed it. Dejected, in response he wrote his best?known poem in honor of the executed nationalist leader and a close friend, Thomas McDonagh. He was killed at Flanders in the Battle of Ypres in 1917. The book features two introductions written by Lord Dunsany, Ledwidge's mentor, one to Songs of the Field and the other to Songs of Peace from 1914 and 1916 respectively.

    A blackbird singing
    On a moss-upholstered stone,
    Bluebells swinging,
    Shadows wildly blown,
    A song in the wood,
    A ship on the sea.
    The song was for you
and the ship was for me.
    A blackbird singing
I hear in my troubled mind,
Bluebells swinging, I see in a distant wind. But sorrow and silence, Are the wood's threnody, The silence for you and the sorrow for me.
