Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback (Nelle) Harper Lee (1926-) American writer, famous for her race relations novel TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1961. The book became an international bestseller and was adapted into screen in 1962. Lee was 34 when the work was published, and it has remained her only novel. "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." Descendent from Robert E. Lee, the Southern Civil War general, Harper Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama. Her father was a former newspaper editor and proprietor, who had served as a state senator and practiced as a lawyer in Monroeville. Lee studied law at the University of Alabama from 1945 to 1949, and spent a year as an exchange student in Oxford University, Wellington Square. Six months before finishing her studies, she went to New York to pursue a literary career. She worked as an Airline reservation clerk with Eastern Air Lines and British Overseas Airways during the 1950s. In 1959 Lee accompanied Truman Capote to Holcombe, Kansas, as a research assistant for Capote's classic 'non-fiction' novel

He had announced in the schoolyard the day before that Scout Finch's daddy defended niggers. I denied it, but told Jem.
"What'd he mean sayin' that?" I asked.
"Nothing," Jem said. "Ask Atticus, he'll tell you."
"Do you defend niggers, Atticus?" I asked him that evening.
"Of course I do. Don't say nigger, Scout. That's common."
"'s what everybody at school says."
Dabei kommt im gesamten Buch weder die Spannung noch der Humor zu kurz.
"...it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." Und "mockingbird" "Because they eat little colored babies' eyes out." "So?" Without cracking so much as a hint of a smile, Truman continued. "With their eyes gone they can't find their mother's nongies, they'll starve to death. So mockingbirds keep down the colored population."
Das Buch hat eine Botschaft. "I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks."

    About Harper Lee

Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, to Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunningham Finch Lee. Harper Lee grew up in the small southwestern Alabama town of Monroeville. Her father, a former newspaper editor and proprietor, was a lawyer who also served on the state legislature (1926-38). As a child, Lee was a tomboy and a precocious reader and enjoyed the friendship of her schoolmate and neighbor, the young Truman Capote, who provided the basis of the character of Dill in her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee was only five years old in when the first trials began in April 1931 in the small Alabama town of Scottsboro surrounding the purported rapes of two white women by nine young black men. The defendants, who were nearly lynched before being brought to court, were not provided with the services of a lawyer until the first day of trial. Despite medical testimony that the women had not been raped, the all-white jury found the men guilty of the crime and sentenced all but the youngest, a twelve-year-old, to death. Six years of subsequent trials saw most of these convictions repealed and all but one of the men freed or paroled. The Scottsboro case left a deep impression on the young Lee, who would use it later as the rough basis for the events in To Kill a Mockingbird.

She was the "Queen of the Tomboys"
by George Thomas Jones, one of Miss Lee's former school mates. It happened during the mid 1930s at Monroeville Elementary School. In my mind's eye I can still see the fire in those big brown eyes as they stared dead ahead. Her teeth clenched in jaws set as only could be akin to a full blood bulldog. Her tiny hands balled into tight fists as she strode defiantly from the playground back toward her fourth-grade classroom. The preceding 15 minutes had been classic. The school bell signaling recess had sent all six elementary grades spilling outside for a time of games and long-awaited change of pace. The young heroine was involved in a fast game of doge ball when a fifth-grade bully snuck up from behind - gave her hair a good yank - and quickly skipped away.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Truman Capote (1924-1984) - original name Truman Streckfus Persons American novelist, short story writer, and playwright. Capote gained international fame with his "nonfiction novel" IN COLD BLOOD (1966), an account of a real life crime in which an entire family was murdered by two sociopaths. The Louisiana-Mississippi-Alabama area provided the setting for much of Capote's fiction. She took a bite of apple, and said: "Tell me something you've written. The story part."
"That's one of the troubles. They're not the kind of stories you can tell."
    "Too dirty?"
"Maybe I'll let you read one some time."
"Whisky and apples go together. Fix me a drink, darling. Then you can read me a story yourself."

(from Breakfast at Tiffany's, In his childhood Capote made friends with Harper Lee, who portrayed him as Dill in her world famous novel To Kill a Mockingbird . "Dill was a curiosity. He wore blue linen shorts that buttoned to his shirt, his hair was snow white and stuck to his head like duckfluff; he was a year my senior but I towered over him. As he told us the old tale his blue eyes would lighten and darken; his laugh was sudden and happy; he habitually pulled at a cowlick in the center of his forehead." Capote started to write stories when he was only eight. He attended the Trinity School and St. John's Academy in New York, and the public schools of Greenwich, Connecticut, but ended his formal schooling at the age of seventeen. He found work at the
