51. Spectrum SF5

http://www.bestsf.net/reviews/spectrum7.html
Spectrum SF 7, November 2001, Spectrum Publishing, Aberdeen, UK.
ISSN 1468-3903 For more details of Spectrum SF, visit their website A bigger than usual issue of Spectrum, which is nice. But only the third issue published this year, and so the quarterly publication schedule has been missed for 2001. Maybe it doesn't worry non-librarians, but for a quarterly periodical to only publish three issues - tsk, tsk. The extra number of pages enables a lengthy serialisation in two parts of a Charles Stross 'novel' entitled 'The Atrocity Archive'. I'm not sure about referring to this as a novel, as for me a novel is something that is or will be published alone with its own ISBN. Furthermore, publisher Paul Fraser has put me in the horns of a dilemma - I don't read serialised novels, but this is by Charles Stross, whose stories I particularly enjoy. A quick spot of rationalisation resolved this dilemma - I will pretend that this is a very long novella split over two issues of a magazine, and will review it next issue. ;-) Crew-Dog. Mary Soon Lee.

Enjoyable in its own right, but I would rather see Baxter spendingtime on more serious short SF. Luna Classifieds. mary soon lee.
http://www.bestsf.net/reviews/spectrum6.html
Spectrum SF 6, July 2001, Spectrum Publishing, Aberdeen, UK.
ISSN 1468-3903 For more details of Spectrum SF, visit their website First to the Moon! Stephen Baxter and Simon Bradshaw. Editor Fraser cites this pair's previous story 'Prospero One' (Interzone 112, October 1996) as being a previous story in an alternate British space program series. Baxter has also in solo mode produced alternate takes on the space programme in 'Tracks' (Interzone 169, July 2001) and in his 'Moon Six' story (Science Fiction Age 1997 and honoured through its inclusion in Dozois' 15th and online on the excellent InfinityPlus ). 'In the MSOB' (Interzone March 1996 and Dozois' 1997) also reflects on the space program/me. His 'Columbiad' (Science Fiction Age, May 1996, and Hartwell's Best SF 2 1997) is written in the style of HG Wells/Jules Verne, telling the story of a visit to the planet Mars, and this story is in very similar territory, in describing a 1930s British expedition to the Moon. Enjoyable in its own right, but I would rather see Baxter spending time on more serious short SF. Luna Classifieds. Mary Soon Lee.

Craobhacha Peil 2002- Day 1 Corn: Kitterick / Sweet Afton Scoil Mhuire RF 5-20 v Belgrove 2-07
The Corn Kitterick was won by St. Mary's BNS Rathfarnham, after a highly impressive 5-20 to 2-7 victory over Belgrove N.S Clontarf. The Kehoe twins Barry and John seemed to have inherited plenty of skills from their Uncle Noel Barry who plays for the Wexford county football team. It was John Keogh who put the points on the board for Mary's scoring 1-8 in the first half and 1-11 in total. While his brother Barry playing at centre-half made sure there was no way back for Belgrove with a strong
performance. Manager of the team Edward O'Riordain said the win was "history for the school" and proclaimed his boys "the finest team the school has ever produced" . Dublin Football star Ciarán Whelan who presented both teams with their medals at the end of the game said that Mary's produced a "brilliant standard of football."

Starring: Blair Underwood as Nicholas/Calvin Julia Roberts as Catherine/Francesca David Hyde Pierce as Carl Catherine Keener as Lee Mary McCormack as Linda Erika Alexander as Lucy Rainn Wilson as Brian David Duchovny as Bill/Gus Enrico Colantoni as Arty/Ed Nicky Katt as Hitler Summary: The title "Full Frontal" sounds like a skin-flick; it's actually an assault on Hollywood directed by "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" auteur Steven Soderbergh. The film uses an ensemble cast and a grainy look to satirize the film industry in Los Angeles, California. While many mainstream moviegoers may hate it, those that catch onto the joke, will probably enjoy what they see on screen. Story: "Full Frontal" intercuts between many stories. The opening of the film gives the audience six characters; their names, their pictures, and their mini-biographies. From this introduction, the audience is immediately aware that this isn't just a turn-your-brain-off movie.
