The Free Press, 1989 "With EXPLAINING HITLER , [Rosenbaum] has written a book that does for Hitler studies what David Lehman's superb book SIGNS OF THE TIMES The New York Times , June, 1998 SIGNS OF THE TIMES Times Literary Supplement, January, 1997 The New York Times Book Review "What David Lehman's outstanding book demonstrates is that one of the most powerful intellectual movements in American universities is morally bankrupt.. . . This book is not only a bag of nails for the coffin of deconstruction but also a hammer and strong arm. Yet deconstruction has already spawned offspring that will survive it. According to Mr Lehman, today's 'politically correct' academics come close to embodying a notion of the literary critic as an agent of the thought police: 'acquiescing in the notion that disinterested inquiry is an impossibility and that every value judgment is necessarily a power play before it is anything else, they make their decisions by applying ideological litmus tests.' Some police force: it cannot even spot wickedness in its own ranks."— The Economist "In considering this scandal, Mr. Lehman reveals something more sinister, not so much in the mysterious Paul de Man as in his post-structuralist defenders, who used the tools of deconstruction to nullify, or pathetically attempt to nullify, what de Man himself had actually done. If a 'text' has no external'referent,' they reasoned, de Man's Nazi propaganda, the text, is merely a verbal construction needing to be contextualized. . . . With marvelous ingenuity, the academics 'showed' that de Man's pro-Hitler propaganda was actually anti-Hitler when contextualized. It didn't work. The 'referent' did exist. History was not a subjective text, and deconstruction is fated to pass away. It will be a nuisance in the academy for a while, but it need not detain us."—

I didn't meant to alarm you When I told you I loved you I thought it would charm you I was drunk at the time When I told you I loved you You wore pristine blue jeans at the bar I was drunk at the time Don't think I didn't notice You wore pristine blue jeans at the bar And sat on the bar stool beside me Don't think I didn't notice And the predicted snow began to fall You sat on the bar stool beside me When you looked in the mirror it dissolved And the predicted snow began to fall But failed to accumulate, disappointing all When you looked in the mirror it dissolved When you looked out the window it snowed But failed to accumulate, disappointing all Who had stayed awake to watch it fall When you looked out the window it snowed And the moon was full We had stayed awake to watch it fall And day broke And the moon was full I thought it would charm you And day broke I didn't mean to alarm you.

The Last Avant-Garde: The Making of the New York School of Poets
Among the four, Ashbery has become the most influential and celebrated, though O’Hara’s influence on English-language poetry has been enormous and was shortened prematurely by his bizarre death at 40. In their early years, Ashbery was considered by the other three as "The Poet," while O’Hara was the consummate charmer, the center of attention in any room. Koch, who received his PhD and taught at Columbia University for many years, remained a consistently humorous and inventive poet and became a renowned teacher of poetry. Schuyler, the fourth poet in the group in terms of output and acclaim, battled crippling psychological problems; although important to younger poets attached to the New York School, Schuyler’s general influence has been considerably smaller than that of the other three.
The Last Avant-Garde is a worthy place to begin.

The Last Avant-Garde:
The Making of the New York School of Poets
How I stumbled upon this book is still a mystery to me even though the author and his work occupy half a shelf in my personal library. David Lehman, author of The Last Avant-Garde: The Making of the New York School of Poets , has written a book I believe every serious poet needs to read. His book is not just a biography of four of the most well known poets in America, it is also a critique of the art and literary culture in the 1950's and 1960's, a social history of those changing times in America, and a literary analysis of the works of John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, Kenneth Koch, James Schuyler, and other poets of the period. A brief description of the book from his publisher's press release states: "David Lehman's, The Last Avant-Garde: The Making of the New York School of Poets for
the first time fully explores the distinctive cultural, social and artistic factors that sparked the
major American literary movement and the four unique personalities at its core . . . Gravitating

You Save: $3.20 (20%) Review by Robin Travis For me, a successful book of poetry, in addition to including quality work, is a book which inspires me to write. David Lehman, who recently published his new collection of poems, The Daily Mirror: A Journal in Poetry (Scribner, Jan 2000), has achieved this. While reading the book, I found myself writing poems in response to Lehman's. His writing contains a depth and variety of subject matter that any reader will be moved by the muse. None of the poems in the book are officially titled as they normally would be. Because of the format for their creation, the titles of the poems are the dates they were written. For example, a poem written on January 1st, would be titled January 1. Also, the journaling aspect of the poems is a reflection of Frank O'Hara's Lunchtime poems. In addition, the idea to writing these daily poems, was seeded when Robert Bly spoke at Bennington College a few years back and mentioned writing a poem a day. Beginning in 1996, David Lehman began creating a poem a day as an exercise in writing. While not every day's task may have produced a poem worthy of publication, the selections Lehman chose for

Jane Hammond by David Lehman
Jane Hammond, Wonderful You #2
This interview had its genesis in a live exchange between Jane Hammond and David Lehman early this year, on the occasion of Hammond's exhibition at the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art.

david lehman The late Fairfield Porter, one of Ashbery's friends, a marvelous realist painter who thrived in an age of abstraction, wrote a poem in which he referred to John as both "lazy and quick." (laughter) John is lazy, as he'll be the first to admit. When he does something, he does it quickly. But first you have to get him to do it. And that's my first question. How did you get him to give you the titles? I mean, John likes to be obliging, but he's usually very reluctant and will say, "Do I have to?"
jane hammond (laughter)
dl (laughter) And Ashbery's response read, "Not the actual Sir Realist, but hybrid ones like the Reverend D. and Max Jack Hoe."
jh That's Ashbery right there.
dl Both you and he include something from high art and something popular in the same work, something recondite, something familiar. An Ashbery poem may begin with "Orlando Furioso," a Renaissance epic by Ariosto, and then have Happy Hooligan four lines down, or it might have Daffy Duck and Milton's Satan in the same context. He'll shift references. And this is true of your work as well, where images from different realms of discourse are juxtaposed. With titles, Ashbery reverses the usual procedure; he begins with the title and then writes the poem, as if the title were not a summing up but an opening. Once you got these titles, they must have helped determine how you were going to proceed. Each must have seemed a challenge, it being the way of the imagination to transform challenge into energy and inspiration. I remember how you took apart the phrase
