The Worlds of Fritz Leiber (Ace, 1976 PB)
Along with The Best of Fritz Leiber this is one of the best collections available. Compared to The Best of Fritz Leiber the stories are all a little more off centre, and probably give a fairer view of his work overall. "A fine, fat gathering of sf anf fantasy stories by an old master (whose light has shone more clearly in the Fantasy category). It includes the Hugo and Nebula award winning tale 'Catch That Zeppelin!. Pleasingly the book contains no overlaps with The Best of Fritz Leiber, published two years earlier. It is, in effect, a second 'Best of...' selection."

Fritz Leiber
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Fritz Reuter Leiber Jr. ( December 24 September 5 ) was a hugely influential American writer of fantasy and science fiction To describe him as popular, amongst both fans and his fellow writers, might be an understatement: his science fiction novels The Big Time ) and The Wanderer ) and the short stories "Gonna Roll them Bones" ( ), about a gambler playing dice with Death, and "Ship of Shadows" ( ) all won Hugo awards ; "Bones" also won a Nebula award As the child of two Shakespearean actors stage , from short stories featuring travelling Shakespearean companies such as "No Great Magic" and "Four Ghosts in Hamlet", to the actor/producer protagonist of the novel A Specter is Haunting Texas . An interesting feature of The Big Time is that though it is about a war between two factions changing and rechanging history throughout the Universe, all the action takes place in a small bubble of isolated

Noam Chomsky
Noam Avram Chomsky was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 7, 1928. He received his early education at Oak Lane Country Day School and Central High School, Philadelphia. He continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania where he studied linguistics, mathematics, and philosophy. In 1955, he received his Ph. D. from the University of Pennsylvania, however, most of the research leading to this degree was done at Harvard University between 1951 and 1955. Since receiving his Ph. D., Chomsky has taught at Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he now holds the Ferrari P. Ward Chair of Modern Language and Linguistics. Noam was married to Carol Schatz on December 24, 1949 and has two children. Noam has always been interested in politics, and it is said that politics has brought him into the linguistics field. His political tendencies toward socialism and anarchism are a result of what he calls "the radical Jewish community in New York." Since 1965 he has become one of the leading critics of U.S. foreign policy. He published a book of essays called American Power and the New Mandarins which is considered to be one of the most substantial arguments ever against American involvement in Vietnam.

On My Vicious Ways
A Response to Justin Leiber
Justin Leiber took the trouble to put pen to paper and express his discontent concerning my article "What Kind of Turing Test did Turing have in Mind?" and for this, I am grateful to him. Contrary to what the late Professor Feynman used to say ("Don’t listen to what I say , listen to what I mean !"), Leiber courageously says what he means, notwithstanding the academic etiquette which recommends to keep one’s anger for oneself. I’ll try to follow Leiber’s example, first because I think he is wrong in his criticisms even if I am perhaps guilty of not stating my own line of argument as clearly as I should have done, and secondly because everybody has to gain from a clarification of both our points of view. Since we have the opportunity, thanks to Tekhnema Let us start with emotions. Justin Leiber repeatedly argues in his nine-page long harsh response that my line of argument is "absurd" (five times), "perversely" argued (four times), "preposterous," "silly," "uncharitable" and a "manic parody of psychoanalysis," which presents Turing as a "sexist," "scientistic machine-lover," impaired with a "perverse psycho-pathology." Last but not least, Justin Leiber hints that I should pay more respect for Turing as a person because of his great work in cryptanalysis during World War II which kept Britain (and finally the rest of the world) free from Nazi dominion. Leaving aside the sarcastic tone Leiber amply uses, I shall start with a brief comment on the last aspect of these very passionate criticisms, which deals with Turing as a person.

updated January 25, 2001 Welcome to my Science Fiction Bookclub page. Science Fiction bookclub editions have always been a cheap alternative for people who like the feel of a weighty tome instead of paperbacks. Until recently, there was little collector interest in these books. Now there seems to be a recognition that while bookclubs will never have the appeal of limited edition hardcovers, they represent a separate market that will be collected in the future. Whether you decide to collect bookclubs, or just want to expand your reading choices, you will find some of the lowest cost reading available anywhere right here on this page. All books are priced at $2.00, which is less than the cost of a paperback book. And they look great on your shelves, especially at less than 10% of the cost of the high priced books. And they read just as well while you save for those first editions. All these bookclubs have dustjackets- most, but not all are in fine condition. If you choose to order some of these for your collection, be sure to carefully read my

76. Review | JUSTIN/Time
Written by someone else, however, justin/Time would be simply another midlist asthe writer of the standard reference on the American fantasist Fritz leiber.

JUSTIN/Time by Billy Dee Williams and Rob MacGregor Published by Tor Books 352 pages, 2000 ISBN: 0312872712 Buy it online Wastin' Time Reviewed by Bruce Byfield Stories about changing reality are a staple of science fiction. From Robert E. Heinlein's By His Bootstraps and Isaac Asimov's The End of Eternity through Ursula K. LeGuin's The Lathe of Heaven and beyond, variants on the theme have recycled endlessly. The theme is so familiar that new variants can no longer rely on the novelty of the basic idea to hold readers' interest. Even the dodge of having every attempt to manipulate result in worse problems has been done too many times to rely on. Instead, they need a new twist, interesting characters, or stylistic verve. Billy Dee Williams and Rob MacGregor's JUSTIN/Time has none of these things. It is simply a competent replay of themes that have been already used far too often. JUSTIN/Time is a sequel to Psi/Net.

Supernatural Horror: Authors and Themes FRITZ LEIBER IN MEMORIAM Fritz Leiber, one of the most versatile and unorthodox writers of science fiction, fantasy and horror, died on 5 September 1992, at the age of 81. Leiber was born in Chicago on 24 December 1910. His parents, Fritz Sr and Virginia, were members of Robert Mantell's Shakespearean repertory company, and Leiber's early years were filled with the trappings of Shakespearean drama and the theatre, which would later influence his work. He attended the University of Chicago, eventually graduating in psychology and philosophy. After a very brief spell as an ordinand of the Episcopal Church, he joined his father's own Shakespeare company. Leiber married his first wife, Jonquil Stephens, on 18 January 1936. They moved to Hollywood, where he attempted to find work in films, while trying to write saleable supernatural horror fiction. At this time he became a correspondent of H P Lovecraft, who was perhaps his single greatest literary influence (although not much in terms of style). Lovecraft encouraged his early attempts at fiction. At the same time Leiber began the first drafts, in collaboration with Harry Fischer, of the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser stories tales which revolutionised the heroic fantasy genre, and eventually defined much of it.

In Memoriam, Fritz Reuter Leiber, Jr., 1910-1992
Fritz Leiber was Fafhrd!!!
Fritz Leiber wrote the most delectable swords-and-sorcery tales of all! His various adventures of the Gray Mouser and Fafhrd stand at the very pinnacle of what swords and sorcery writing should be. I was lucky enough to know Fritz Leiber just a little bit. He came to Phoenix for IguanaCon in 1978, and did the greatest reading of a H.P. Lovecraft story that I've ever heard. And once, while we were in San Francisco for a gaming convention, Elizabeth Danforth, Michael A. Stackpole, and I visited Fritz in his apartment in a rickety old building in downtown San Francisco. He was very kind to let three unknown fans just come up and see him, and we saw marvels indeed inside his tiny quarters. We saw the Gray Mauser! And Hugos! And Nebulas! Fritz Leiber was born December 25, 1910 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of Fritz and Virginia Leiber (both Shakespearian actors), and he spent some time on the stage with them as a young man. He started his adult career as an Episcopal minister (1932-33) in New Jersey, which must have been tough, as he soon left the church to go on stage as a Shakespearian actor (1934-36). He then went on to four years as a book editor for Consolidated Book Publishers in Chicago (1937-41). He finally left Chicago for California to be a teacher at Occidental College in speech and drama. During World War II he worked as a precision inspector for Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica. He went back to Chicago to be a mazazine editor for about 8 years. From 1956 until his death he was a free-lance writer, doing much of his best work in the 1970s.

On What Sort of Speech Act Wittgenstein's Investigations Is and Why It Matters
This paper will appear in the winter/spring 1997 issue of Philosophical Forum. Hence I am removing it from this web site. I will be happy to send you an offprint. What follows is the first section of the paper which I offer as a teaser.
You can e-mail me at: jleiber@uh.edu I
I ought to be no more than a mirror, in which my reader can see his own thinking with all its deformities so that, helped in this way, he can put it right. (Wittgenstein 1980, p. 18)
Philosophers concerned with speech acts, or Wittgenstein's uses of language, mostly fix their attention on actions done by issuing just a phrase or short sentence (in the appropriate circumstances with the proper qualifications, feeling, intent, uptake, etc.). "Five red apples" is Wittgenstein's paradigm example in his Philosophical Investigations. "There's a bittern at the bottom of your garden" plays a similar role in J. L. Austin's most central and ambitious essay, "Other Minds." Indeed, as Wittgenstein points out, a single word or gesture may do the job perfectly well, just as an illiterate man can make a valid contract by marking an "X" on a piece of paper. And, of course, in all relevant philosophical respects, a speech act may be written rather than spoken: in his leitmotiv example, Wittgenstein writes "five red apples" on a slip of paper and hands it to his shopper.
