Stormy Night
Stormy Night is a collection of questions and fears that keep a young girl (and her dog) awake on an unsettled night. Big questions like "Where do we come from?" and "What happens after we die?" mix with seemingly smaller anxieties like "Am I nice looking?" Simple, imaginative, black and white line drawings illustrate the text beautifully. Some of the illustrations are funny, but all treat their subject seriously. "Sometimes I feel like I don't fit in my body!" the girl exclaims. "Some times I feel completely lost!" No answers are given, but in the midst of the darkness, dreams, joy and hope survive, and so too, we know, will the girl, with her faithful dog beside her. Originally published in German as Gewitternacht, this book has been translated into eight other languages. It has won many honours, including the Bologna Ragazzi Award. "Philosophy is not only for adults," says Lemieux. "Each and every one of us can and may reflect upon the unanswered questions of humankind, and, in doing so, open up his or her imagination." This book is for "everyone who knows that humour and imagination are the surest bets in life." Most of the drawings come directly from Lemieux's sketchbook from a time when she found herself full of doubt, and questioning herself and her abilities.

program no. 01.10 Hello, and welcome to the Loose Leaf Book Company. I'm Tom Bodett, and this week we are pondering the imponderables, bobbing for the forbidden apple, begging the big question. Life. What does it mean? Are we genetically predisposed to pursue security in the form of fatty foods and sexy consumer goods? There's got to be more. I mean you can only eat so much, and you can only buy so many Palm Pilots before you realize it's a dead end. Power, then. Is that our quest? Not likely. Truth? Whose? Beauty? By what measure? Fishing? Maybe. But let's not jump to conclusions. Let's look to the books, instead. Books for kids. • FAIRY TALES WOLVES-FICTION
Since its debut in the '30s, Prokofiev's now-classic orchestral fairy taleof a boy who captures a wolf with the aid of some animal friends has been hugely popular. Here, with a nod to its musical origins (an introductory illustration showing each ofthe characters with his corresponding instrument), Lemieux ( A Gift from St. Francis ; Voices on the Wind ) delivers a straightforward, tightly written version of the tale. She takes some libertiesthe hunters cart the wolf off to the zoo in the end, for example, instead of slitting him open to free the duck he's consumedand purists may lament the separation of the story from its musical score, but children will stillthrill to the bravery of Peter, who ignores his grandfather's warnings andcatches a wolf by the tail. Dark, highly stylized oil paintings resound with suitably Russian elementsGrandfather looks like Tolstoy, the hunters are dressed as Cossacksand create a fittingly atmospheric backdrop to thisbeloved story. All ages. (Oct.) Gr 1-4 Not another Peter and the Wolf ? Alas, yesjoining the 15 already in print. This retelling is not especially sensitive, and the pictures are faithful but not extraordinary. Lemieux's calm neo-classicism has a few restrained Slavic touches, and the stylization of the wolf and of g Grandfather may render these characters less frightening. The palette is rich, especially in blues and greens. But little is done with the musical and theatrical potential of the original: there are no closeups of the instruments, nomusical transcription of the distinctive themes, none of the inventive staging, framing, or perspective to be found in Jorg Muller's version (Knopf, 1986), which has a companion cassette. That edition, and Erna Voight's (Godine, 1987) remain better choices. Patricia Dooley, University of Washington, Seattle
