Acceptance Speech Upon Receiving The Margaret Edwards Award (American Library Association Lifetime Achievement Award For Writing In The Field Of Young Adult Literature)
by Madeleine L'Engle
Author June 27, 1998 What an honor it is for me to be here with you today. I am grateful indeed that you have accepted my books, especially the Murry and Austin books for the Margaret Edwards Award. I want to give you the particular thanks of Polly O'Keefe and Vicky Austin. A few months ago I was at a Master's Tea at Yale University, sitting in a comfortable chair surrounded by a gathering of students, most of whom knew my books and characters as well as if not more than I do. We talked about future plans for some of the characters, and I was able to tell them that Polly O'Keefe is in medical school. A few days later I received a letter from one of the students saying that she was a first year medical student at Yale, and that she and her friends would love to have Polly O'Keefe in their class. I wrote back that Polly would be delighted to be part of their class.

MADELEINE L'ENGLE (1918)
One of the most respected and loved children's authors in America, she received the 1963 Newberry Medal for A Wrinkle in Time Madeleine L'Engle was born in New York City, the only child of a foreign correspondent and a gifted pianist. She attended boarding school in Switzerland and graduated cum laude from Smith College in 1941. Madeleine wrote her first novel, The Small Rain (1945) while acting for a New York theater group. She and her future husband, Hugh Franklin, were on tour together when they met and married. After publishing several additional novels while raising three children, the Franklin family moved to western Connecticut and opened a general store. It was here that she experienced the communal life which would inspire much of her work, including "The Austin Family" series, beginning with Meet the Austins , one of the American Library Association's Notable Children's Books of 1960. Though L'Engle had difficulty finding publishers for her works in the 1950's, with A Wrinkle in Time , her career as a writer took off. The book quickly became a popular and critical success winning the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award as well as the Newberry Medal for "the most distinguished contribution to children's literature" of 1962. Two companion novels

Madeleine L'Engle Madeleine L'Engle's creative novels, especially the prize-winning, ever-popular A Wrinkle in Time , have introduced generations of readers to the concept of higher dimensions and the objects like the Tesseract that can be found there. When Meg wants to locate her Father, she has to be open to new ideas that change her conceptions of space and time. Her journeys take her, momentarily, to a two-dimensional planet, and lead her to explore a space of four-dimensions with time as a fifth dimension. Many young women and men have been inspired to learn more about mathematics as a result of this imaginative introduction to the full range of dimensions. For many readers, A Wrinkle in Time provides the first introduction to the Tesseract , a mysterious concept that somehow leads to higher dimensions. You can explore the Tesseract using one of several interactive Java applets.

And it is an affirmation that story is true and takes us beyond the facts into something far more real." The handsome paperback set includes the 1963 Newbery Medal winner, A Wrinkle in Time , plus A Wind in the Door A Swiftly Tilting Planet , which won the American Book Award, and Many Waters . BIO
Madeleine L’Engle, the author of many popular books for children and adults, attended boarding school as young woman and graduated from Smith College. Always interested in writing, she began her career working in theatre, where she met her future husband, Hugh Franklin. She went on to write full-time and is perhaps best known for her Time Quartet, a series of YA novels about time travel, and the 1963 Newbery Award winner A WRINKLE IN TIME. She resides in New York City, where she is the librarian and writer in residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine ARTICLE
Utilizing Christian theology as a framework to explore the nature between good and evil and the necessity of basic human values, L'Engle asks big questions about personal responsibility, integrity, the dangers of mindless conformity, faith, and the possibility of life in other universes. She writes, "One physicist says that the big question is: are we alone in the universe or not?" The very thought of life in other universes propels L'Engle to explore that great macrocosm beyond us.
In addition to her science fiction and fantasy novels about time travel, L'Engle writes coming-of-age, suspense and mystery novels for teens, mainstream adult novels, poetry, and plays. Considered one of America's foremost creators of fantasy and science fiction, she was awarded the 1998 Margaret A. Edwards Award, honoring her lifetime contributions to the YA genre.
