I 've been reading Madeleine L'Engle's books since I discovered A Wrinkle in Time in my junior high school library. I love both her inventive fiction and her inspirational and religious-oriented nonfiction, which is lively, interesting, and truly spiritual without being pious and bombastic. If I am having a crisis of faith, reading one of her nonfiction pieces usually restores my equilibrium. It is also fascinating to discover what events in her life have been worked into her fictionfor instance, her adopted daughter Maria forms the basis for the Meet the Austins character Maggy. But I find one of the things I enjoy most about her fiction is the way characters intertwine within her different novels. The first section of this page traces those linksif I've forgotten any, send me an e-mail! Many of her young adult and children's novels concern the lives of two families, the Murrys/O'Keefes and the Austins. The Murry family are introduced in the Newbery Award-winning A Wrinkle in Time

BOB ABERNETHY (anchor): Now, a profile of a best-selling writer of fantasy and adventure long before J.K. Rowling created Harry Potter. She is Madeleine L'Engle, whose science fiction, beginning with A WRINKLE IN TIME like the Harry Potter books has been both widely read by young people and strongly criticized by some religious conservatives. I spoke with Madeleine L'Engle a year ago about Christianity, censorship, science, suffering, and love.
Madeleine L'Engle broke her hip last year and that has slowed her down. But on this evening, she said vespers with the nine Episcopal nuns at New York's Community of the Holy Spirit.
L'Engle is an Episcopal laywoman who prays and reads the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer every morning and evening. For many years, she did her writing at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, where she is still librarian and writer-in-residence. So, does all that Christian practice make her a Christian writer?
MADELEINE L'ENGLE : No. I am a writer. That's it. No adjectives. The first thing is writing. Christianity is secondary.

A Wrinkle in Time and her classic work on faith and art, Walking on Water, "Madeleine L’Engle is one of the wise women not only of our time but of the ages. She would be comfortable in the company of Sappho and Sophocles, Dante and Chaucer, MacDonald and Dostoevsky, and they would rejoice in hers. She understands, as they did, that, confronted by the mysteries at the heart of the cosmos–the mysteries of union and separation, of progress and retreat, of good and evil–one must enlist in the struggle with all one’s might and at the same time bow in awe before the unspeakable beauty and pain and all that is inexplicable." How the Irish Saved Civilization, The Gifts of the Jews, and Desire of the Everlasting Hills Walking on Water
By Madeleine L'Engle In this classic book, Madeleine L'Engle addresses the questions, What makes art Christian? What does it mean to be a Christian artist? What is the relationship between faith and art? Through L'Engle's beautiful and insightful essay, readers will find themselves called to what the author views as the prime tasks of an artist: to listen, to remain aware, and to respond to creation through one's own art.

Biographical Sketch Madeleine L'Engle Camp Franklin, whose pen name is Madeleine L'Engle, was born in New York City on November 29, 1918. When she was twelve years old, L'Engle attended a Swiss boarding school for two years. She completed her preparatory education in South Carolina and went on to receive a Bachelor's degree in English from Smith College in 1941. She attended the New School for Social Research in New York from 1941 to 1942 and did graduate work at Columbia University from 1960 to 1961. L'Engle had an active career in the theater from 1941 to 1947, and hoped someday to become a playwright. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Hugh Franklin, while both were performing in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. It was also during this period that L'Engle published her first book, The Small Rain During most of the 1950s, L'Engle and her family lived in northwestern Connecticut where her husband operated a small general store and she tried to find time for writing while being a wife and mother of small children as well as part time clerk in the store. During this time, most of L'Engle's manuscripts were rejected and in 1958 she determined to give up writing altogether. She soon found, though, that she could not stop, that she needed to write in order to be happy. Her work began to sell and in 1962 she won the Newbery Award for

BIO
Madeleine L’Engle, the author of many popular books for children and adults, attended boarding school as young woman and graduated from Smith College. Always interested in writing, she began her career working in theatre, where she met her future husband, Hugh Franklin. She went on to write full-time and is perhaps best known for her Time Quartet, a series of YA novels about time travel, and the 1963 Newbery Award winner A WRINKLE IN TIME. She resides in New York City, where she is the librarian and writer in residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine ARTICLE
Utilizing Christian theology as a framework to explore the nature between good and evil and the necessity of basic human values, L'Engle asks big questions about personal responsibility, integrity, the dangers of mindless conformity, faith, and the possibility of life in other universes. She writes, "One physicist says that the big question is: are we alone in the universe or not?" The very thought of life in other universes propels L'Engle to explore that great macrocosm beyond us.

MADELEINE L'ENGLE "Most of the time nowadays we human beings are referred to as consumers. What does the consumer think? What does the consumer want? How ugly. Forest fires consume. Cancer consumes. I want us to be nourishers. To be a librarian, particularly a librarian for young adults, is to be a nourisher, to share stories, offer books full of new ideas. We live in a world which has changed radically in the last half century, and story helps us to understand and live creatively with change." - from Madeleine L'Engle's acceptance speech upon receiving the Margaret Edwards Award (American Library Association Lifetime Achievement Award for Writing in the Field of Young Adult Literature). Biography Madeleine L'Engle, whose most recent contributions to the literary and library fields have been as writer-in-residence and librarian at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, is one of the most loved and respected children's authors in America. She received the 1963 Newbery Medal for A Wrinkle in Time . Though L'Engle is the author of over forty volumes of plays, poems, essays, and novels for adults, she is best known for her novels for children and young adults that consist of an imaginative blend of science fiction, compelling storytelling, fairy tale, and important themes, such as familial love and moral responsibility.

A House Like a Lotus > Customer Review #1: A compelling, but shocking novel. Not for young young-adults
Be warned that this review contains serious spoilers. Madeleine LEngle is, of course, best known for her book "A Wrinkle in Time" and the four books following which chronicle the adventures of Meg and Charles, and Megs future husband Calvin. They are fantastical tales of travel at the speed of thought, alien worlds, monstrous evils to be fought, and the power of love in all its forms. Madeleine LEngle has a deeper range than young adult science fiction. Even knowing this, however, it was a shock to read "A House Like a Lotus". It has the love of the Time Quartet books, but there is no tessering. There are no alien worlds to explore, and no monstrous evils. To see Meg and Calvin coping with a brood of seven children, and their eldest daughter, Polyhymnia (Polly), dealing with a straight story about love, betrayal and forgiveness makes it feel like youre reading from a different author. It is a compelling expansion upon Meg and Calvins characters, and Polly carries the story in the first person with considerable grace, as she first befriends, and then flees from, a dying woman named Maxa. Its brilliant, but it still takes some getting used to.

Anglican writer Madeleine L'Engle explores Christian mythology in many of her speculative fiction novels for children. An American, L'Engle has also written a number of nonfiction works for adults about Christian life. And yet we are still being taught that fairy tales and myths are to be discarded as soon as we are old enough to understand "reality." I had a disturbed and angry letter from a young mother who told me that a friend of hers, with young children, gave them only instructive books; she wasn't going to allow their minds to be polluted with fairy tales. They were going to be taught the "real" world. This attitude is a victory for the powers of this world. A friend of mine, a fine story-teller, remarked to me, "Jesus was not a theologian. He was God who told stories." Yes. God who told stories. St. Matthew says, "And he spake many things to them in parables . . . and without a parable spake he not to them." When the powers of this world denigrate and deny the value of story, life loses much of its meaning; and for many people in the world today, life has lost its meaning, one reason why every other hospital bed is for someone with a mental, not a physical illness. Clyde Kirby writes, "Meaninglessness inhibits fullness of life and is therefore equivalent to illness. Meaning makes a great many things endurable – perhaps everything. . . . it is not that 'God' is a myth, but that myth is the revelation of a divine life in man. It is not we who invent myth; rather, it speaks to us as a Word of God."

Madeleine L'Engle's Story
Taken from Walking Away from Faith by Ruth A. Tucker The Crosswicks Confessions
When I first read the Crosswicks Journals many years ago, I knew I had found in the author a kindred spirit. I marked up the books and made good use of quotes in my teaching and speaking. But now as I have occasion to reread the books, I'm seeing things that I passed right by years ago. Madeleine L'Engle is firstly a mother and secondarily a writer and teacher and speaker (who often gives lectures at Wheaton College and other Christian schools). It was in those capacities and in her perspective on life that I identified with her. But now I discover that she, like me, was also a shopkeeper: she ran a general store with her husband. My store is a gift and garden shop that I have developed with my son. She writes that she, in her "reading Schopenhauer behind the counter, or writing in a journal between customers, must have seemed a very peculiar bird to the people who came in to our store." I too have written in my journal between customers; and she and I are no doubt among a dying breed of shop-keepers who have read Schopenhauer behind the counter.
