James VI. the next heir, but was soon after granted to the king’s uncle Charles, who died in 1576, leaving an only child, the’ unfortunate Lady Arabella Stewart. With the death of his little son Esme, the 5th duke, in 1660, the titles, including that of Richmond, passed to his first cousin Charles, who had already been created ‘Lord Stuart of Newbury and earl of Lichfield, being likewise now seigneur d’Aubigny. Disliked by Charles II., principally because of his marriage with “la belle Stuart “—“ the noblest romance and example ‘of a brave lady that ever I read in my life,” writes Pepys—he was sent into exile as ambassador to Denmark, where he was drowned in 1672. His wife had had the Lennox estates granted to her for life, but his only sister Katharine, wife of Henry O’Brien, heir apparent of the 7th’ earl of Thomond, was served heir to him. Her only~ daughter, the countess of Clarendon, was mother of Theodosia Hyde, ancestress of the present earls of Darnley. The Lennox dukedom, being to heirs male, now devolved upon Charles II., who bestowed’it with the titles of earl of Darnley and Lord Tarbolton upon one of his bastards, Charles Lennox, son of the celebrated duchess of Portsmouth, he having previously been created duke of Richmond, earl of March and Lord Settrington in the peerage of England. The ancient lands of the Lennox title were also granted to him, but these he sold to the duke of

    http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/3500/thos_yarnes.html
    Thomas Yarnes (Harnes)
    First Generation
    1. Thomas YARNES HARNES ) was born in NY about 1730, according to the register in the Greenfield Hill Church records, of Fairfield, CT, as son of William HERNS/HEARNS and Elizabeth THORP. Thomas's will was probated 29 April 1803. Thomas died 1803 in Fredericksburg, Lennox, Ontario, at 61 years of age. This does not agree with his date of birth, but it is likely he is one and the same. Thomas Harnes was taxed from 1759-1766 in South Precinct, which is now part of Putnam County. In March 24, 1772, South Precinct was subdivided into "Southeast", "Fredericksburgh," and "Philips" Precincts. The first of these precincts included the present towns of Southeast and Patterson, the second Carmel and Kent, and the third Putnam Valley and Philipsburgh. Thomas Yarnes, also later known as Herns or Harnes, was living in Kingsbury, Charlotte County, New York. This county was formed in 1772 from Albany, and in 1784 was renamed Washington County. A book, "Old Fort Edward", by Hill, mentions on page 264: "On August 29th, 1780, Joseph Hawkins, Thomas Yarns and William Bell were apprehended by the order of Albert Baker, John Moss, and Noah Pain, three of the justices of the peace of Charlotte County, and brought before the Committee for Detecting and Defeating Conspiracies, at Albany, charged with having been with the enemy." Charlotte County, after being formed in 1772, was comprised of present-day Washington, Warren, Essex, Clinton and part of Franklin Counties in New York as well as part of Bennington, Rutland, Addison, Chittenden and Franklin Counties in Vermont.
