Lessing, Doris Lessing, Doris, The Grass Is Singing Lessing's fiction includes a series of five novels collectively entitled The Children of Violence, which concern an autobiographical character named Martha Quest; the series includes Martha Quest Ripple from the Storm (1958), and The Four-Gated City (1969). A series of five science-fiction novels is collectively entitled Canopus in Argos: Archives, of which The Making of the Representative for Planet 8 (1982) is best known. One of her most influential works, The Golden Notebook (1962), a study of the struggles of a woman writer, is considered a classic of feminist fiction. Among Lessing's other novels are Briefing for a Descent into Hell The Summer Before the Dark The Good Terrorist The Fifth Child (1988), and Mara and Dann (1998). To dramatize the plight of unknown novelists, Lessing wrote two novels, The Diary of a Good Neighbour (1983) and If the Old Could (1984), under the pseudonym of Jane Somers; they were ignored by critics until Lessing revealed their true authorship. She is also well known for her short stories. See her first two volumes of autobiography

    A Retrospective
A rare and excellent site. JCO Originally published in the Southern Review, v9 n4, October 1973.
Doris Lessing is direct, womanly, very charming. She wears her long, graying black hair drawn into a bun at the back of her head; her face is slender and attractive, exactly the face of the photographs, the "Doris Lessing" I had been reading and admiring for so long. Meeting her at last I felt almost faint—certainly unreal—turning transparent myself in the presence of this totally defined, self-confident, gracious woman. I had arrived at Kilburn half an hour early, in order to wander around, to see the neighborhood in which she lived; and now, meeting her at last, I marveled at how easily the space between us had been crossed. Surely everything must seem to me a little enchanted.
Mrs. Lessing spoke very sympathetically of the problems of violence in contemporary culture, especially in America. "But everyone bad guns when I was a child, on the farm," she said, referring to her childhood in Southern Rhodesia. "They went out and shot snakes; it seemed quite natural, to kill. No one ever seemed to ask: Why? Why kill? It seemed entirely natural." She asked me some very perceptive questions about the political climate in the United States: whether anyone would take Wallace's place (since it seemed, this morning, that Wallace might not recover), whether I thought the long, courageous years of effort of the antiwar protesters had really done much good? She seems more sympathetic, generally, with the United States—or with the liberal consciousness of the United States—than with England; when I remarked upon this, she said that her writing seemed to her better understood in the United States.

BY DWIGHT GARNER doris Lessing's two volumes of autobiography "Under My Skin" (1995) and "Walking in the Shade" (published this fall) are striking exceptions to the rule that even extraordinary novelists tend to lead rather ordinary lives. It's impossible to read these books (a third installment is planned) without feeling the rude, healthy glow of a life fully lived. Writing may be a solitary occupation, but "Walking in the Shade" makes it clear that Lessing found time for other things. The book is one of the best accounts yet of how communism dominated the intellectual life of the time, and Lessing often found herself in the political forefront. But this supple memoir is also full of more personal preoccupations. Lessing evokes the feel of drab, gray postwar London; she also captures what it was like to be a single parent in the 1940s and 1950s. The book is crammed with friends and lovers (many of them well-known), and it is an elegy to an almost forgotten time the beginning of the sexual revolution, when almost everyone drank too much, smoked too much and had perhaps just a bit too much sex.

  • "The Sweetest Dream" by Doris Lessing One of our greatest novelists delivers a family saga that's also a scathing indictment of the selfishness of the '60s era left and its Third-World idols By Laura Miller Beware of those who plan to save the world: That is one message to be gleaned from Doris Lessing's skeptical fiction about the left in the 1950s, '60s and '70s. But just as "The Aeneid" offers more than a cautionary tale concerning the reliability of Greeks bearing gifts, Lessing can do plenty besides mercilessly detail the hypocrisies and selfishness of the party members and barricade manners she knew during her days among Britain's radicals. It's just that she skewers them so beautifully, with such consummate, wicked skill, that she distracts you from the countless other gifts that make her one of the major novelists of our time. "The Sweetest Dream" is Lessing in fine form. While the material isn't new to her, she explains in her author's note that this fictional treatment is meant to stand as an alternative to Vol. 3 of her autobiography, a book she will not be writing for fear of causing hurt "to vulnerable people." Instead she aims in this novel to "recapture the spirit of, particularly, the Sixties."
