Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys and Caro and Jeunet's City of Lost Children are two unusually rich SF/fantasy films in current release. Both films' directors have had exceptionally compelling careers: Gilliam's previous films include Brazil and The Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen , while Caro and Jeunet's first film was Delicatessen
lethem (moderator): On Head Space tonight we're going 'guestless' - the topic is, loosely, 12 Monkeys and City of Lost Children , two unusually rich new fantasy/science fiction films currently out. I'd like to encourage people to talk about Terry Gilliam's career in general, too, and about the film genre these films fit into - not just science fiction, but 'dreamlike fantasy' - the tradition that is almost closer to animation than realist film - sometimes credited as being originated by the French guy Georges Melies. centauri: I went and saw them too, Lethem. I felt, since I seem to be one of Head Space's biggest fans that it was my duty and I did not regret that I saw them.

Leaving Head Space in the capable hands of new co-hosts Martha Soukup and Angus MacDonald, founding host Jonathan Lethem moved into the guest's chair on Tuesday 8 October to discuss his new story collection, The Wall of the Sky, the Wall of the Eye (Harcourt Brace, 1996), and reminisce about the old days back when Head Space was run out of a tiny garage in Old Chatham, New York, and broadcast on a hand-cranked, diesel-powered computer.
Martha Soukup: Our special guest tonight is Jonathan Lethem, founding host of Head Space, star of Newsweek, and author of "Gun, With Occasional Music," "Amnesia Moon." And the new story collection, "The Wall of the Sky, the Wall of the Eye." Isylph: Wall eyed horse. Martha Soukup: He's one of the sharpest writers going, he's leaving us, let's all abuse him terribly! Geebee: He's being compared to Kafka. Martha Soukup: Says on this book, yes. He doesn't look Czech-German to me. Jonathan Lethem: Thanks for the nice introduction, Martha. It's funny being on the receiving end here after all this time.

Novelist Jonathan Lethem returns to his hometown to find it almost as strange as his own fiction. By Lorin Stein Sept. 23, 1999 I f you've heard of Jonathan Lethem, you probably heard about him the way I did, from a friend. The friend who turned me on to Lethem's last novel, "Girl in Landscape," did it the best way just opened the book and made me read the first paragraph: Mother and daughter worked together, dressing the two young boys, tucking them into their outfits. The boys slithered under their hands, delighted, impatient, eyes darting sideways. They nearly groaned with momentary pleasure. The four were going to the beach, so their bodies had to be sealed against the sun. The boys had never been there. The girl had, just once. She could barely remember.

    INTERVIEW WITH JONATHAN LETHEM
Thomas Stolmar and Alexander Laurence get bookish with Jon Alexander Laurence : You were originally a painter, so I'd like to know when did you have thoughts of being a writer? Jonathan Lethem : I was cultivating this whole covert writing thing as I was going to Bennington College. I was reading voraciously. I had already been working at used bookstores, which was a way to read a lot of different books. I was reading all sorts of books at the time: Laurence Durrell, Norman Mailer, Philip K. Dick, J. G. Ballard, and other stuff that I ended up not liking like The Beats, which I read throughout High School. I was obsessed with Kerouac and Burroughs. I was reading detective novels, mysteries, and science fiction at the same time. It was all wide open for me. I have never been able to read anything besides fiction effectively which is why I was never a very good student. I don't think abstractly very well. I think in terms of situations, metaphors, and images. On the strength of all the reading I did in High School and college, I think that I'm still the best read person in fiction that I know. That was what I was doing instead of doing well in school. AL : You went to Bennington at the same time that Bret Easton Ellis, Jill Eisenstad, and Donna Tartt were there, all who went on to write novels as well. How did that environment influence you?

This interview began a few days ago, and very well might conclude today. If you have read portions of it, you may skip to the parts you have not yet read. If you have not read any of it, you may skip to the parts that seem easiest to read. Mr. Lethem has made many books, including Gun with Occasional Music, a scathing renunciation of Neo-Orthodox Catholicism, and Girl in Landscape, a reevaluation of British foreign policy after the Opium War. His new book is Motherless Brooklyn, a detective story wherein the protagonist suffers from Tourette's, and goes on to marry the young Ladybird Johnson. It is due in stores any minute now, and it is by most accounts Lethem's best work yet. Lethem was born in he United States sometime after WWII. He has brown hair and does not wear hats. He is known for his quick wit and even quicker temper. We are proud to have Jonathan Lethem as the first subject of these, the McSweeney's Interviews. McSwys:
Many years ago, when she was alive, Gertrude Stein famously said something derogatory about Oakland which is often quoted, because it is a famous quotatation, which she said at one time. My question therefore is a two parter: 1) How do you account for the disproportionately large Hungarian population in Bridgeport, Connecticut and 2) How do answer critics who deride you for not dealing more directly with subjects such as Oakland, Hungary, and Bridgeport, Connecticut in your work, insofar as it is purportedly the work of someone who claims to be an American?

    My Egyptian Cousin
    Jonathan Lethem
I have never travelled further from New York than Western Europe; Saad Eddin Ibrahim is an advocate of democracy imprisoned in Egypt. But Saad and I are both outlying members of the same sprawling Midwestern family: Saad is married to my first cousin Barbara. His name is much in the news and on the op-ed pages these days, if you're looking out for it. A year ago, the New York Times Magazine ran a photo of Saad on its cover, in which he is seen peering from between his courtroom cage-bars. But even such prominent items can be lost in the dispiriting muddle of Middle Eastern politics, so hard to keep in view amid yellow-alert warnings of poison-gas attacks, or alongside sniper headlines which further convince our fear-stupefied Western selves that anyone called Muhammad has a predisposition to run amok. Saad is a professor of sociology at the American University in Cairo and the founder and director of the Ibn Khaldoun Centre for Development Studies, which campaigns for a secular and democratic civil society in Egypt. Famous in Egypt for his controversial writing on minorities, and for his role as a Presidential adviser and television commentator in the Sadat years, Saad came increasingly under attack in the official press during the Mubarak era.

In this story, an alien species known as 'shit dogs' have landed on various locations on Earth and are eating they way into it, occasionally 'excreting' fabulous crystals in exteremely smelly 'dung heaps'. A wealthy man and his team attempt to access the crystals. But will the attempt cause repurcussions among the aliens; or are they even paying attention to the correct alien items?

He has taken Virginia Woolf's classic novel, Mrs. Dalloway , sliced it into thirds, painted each third a different color, and reassembled them, presenting them on a tray for our literary pleasure. That's not to say that it's a bad book, in fact the opposite. It is one of the best I've read recently, and certainly one of the most ambitious. (The Pulitzer Prize committee certainly thought enough of it to award it their prize for fiction published in 1998.) Cunningham's prose is the star here, as this narrative is composed almost entirely of inner thoughts. The three main charactersauthor Virginia Woolf, housewife Laura Brown, and modern "Mrs. Dalloway" Clarissa Vaughanare somewhat similar in make-up, but that is part of the point.
