Week 31 (Feb 03, 2003 The critically-acclaimed young Brooklyn writer, Jonathan Lethem , has come up with some fairly original notions for novels. In As She Climbed Across the Table Girl in Landscape , a thirteen-year-old emigrates with her family to the Planet of the Archbuilders where the natives have names like Lonely Dumptruck and Hiding Kneel. So what do you do for an encore after producing a few kinky novels like that? The answer for Jonathan Lethem was to write a mystery, Motherless Brooklyn , which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, a story that may be a good deal more accessible to the average reader than his earlier work. The hero of Motherless Brooklyn noir Motherless Brooklyn Jonathan Lethem a try.

Gun With Occasional Music by Jonathan Lethem reviewed by
Original appearance: Albedo one issue , date?
GUN WITH OCCASIONAL MUSIC is a great title for a book. Jonathan Lethem has taken the hardboiled private eye novel and grafted it onto a set of characters steeped in a weirdness that Ross Macdonald or Dashiell Hammett could not have imagined even with the assistance of your favourite psychedelic hallucinogen.
It is set in a future California where asking questions is against the law, unless you've got a licence, and an addiction to drugs of one sort or another appears to be almost compulsory. Oh, and one other thing, not everyone is fully human. Evolution therapy has a lot to answer for. Lethem's hero is PI Conrad Metcalf and boy does he have a different array of problems. Apart from those which every private eye from Sam Spade to Jim Rockford experiences - an uneasy relationship with the police, an acute shortage of funds, a penchant for being beaten up etc. - Metcalf client has a girlfriend who is a sheep (very Irish), a competitor who is an ape and there's an evolved (though not very) kangaroo hanging around just about every poorly lit location in the book waiting to pound on his bones.
Newsweek called this novel dazzling and as far as the setting and characters are concerned this is a pretty fair description. And therein lies the problem. Lethem seems to have dazzled not only Newsweek but himself with the breath of his invention. Strip the window dressing away and what you've got is a pretty (sub?) standard piece of detective fiction.

Doubleday, 320 pages, $23.95 In his four previous novels, Jonathan Lethem created increasingly sophisticated, inventive, and playful pastiches of modern science fiction. Although he works at the fringe of the genre, Lethem's respect for the traditions of science fiction and his willingness to explore its possibilities won him a legion of admirers both within the field and among broader literary circles. In his new novel, however, Lethem has ventured beyond science fiction's permeable boundaries for the first time and produced his best novel yet. A delightfully idiosyncratic crime novel

  • For readers who come to Motherless Brooklyn with little knowledge of Brooklyn, what devices, beyond straightforward descriptions, does Lethem use to capture its distinctive atmosphere?
  • Lionel's wordplay includes variations on his own nameLiable Guesscog, Final Escrow, Ironic Pissclaim, for example. How does this particular quirk serve to establish Lionel's sense of himself and his place in the world? Is there an internal logic about the variations or are they simply haphazard?
  • The Minna Men are all orphans, first introduced as teenagers. Discuss how each of them carves out an identity for himself and why this is important to them. How do the initial descriptions Lionel provides of Tony [p. 39], Gil [p. 40], and Danny [p. 42Ð43] foreshadow the relationships among the four as adults? Do their characters change in the course of the novel?
  • Does Minna see himself as more than a boss to the young men? Does he make a conscious effort to turn the group into a family or does the family feeling develop from the needs of the young men themselves? What evidence, if any, is there that Minna's interest in them is emotional as well as practical? In what ways does Minna's relationship with his own mother and older brother influence the way he treats the Minna Men?

"I had this need to see my characters living in the most godawful dystopias."
interviewed by Ron Hogan Jonathan Lethem is a writer whose science fiction novels receive praise not just from other science fiction writers like Karen Joy Fowler, but from 'literary' authors like Barry Gifford and David Bowman as well. They all realize that there's an inventiveness to Lethem's prose that transcends genre distinctions; as you'll find in this discussion, it's something of which Lethem himself is deeply aware. In addition to two novels, Gun, With Occasional Music and Amnesia Moon , he hosts Head Space, a weekly chat room devoted to science fiction at the Hotwired web site. [ Head Space was terminated in 1997, by which time hosting duties had been taken over by fellow SF writer Martha Soukup. RH ]. I met with Lethem at Book Soup in Los Angeles in the early winter of 1995. RH: How did you first get involved with Head Space? JL: I was a guest on Club Wired initially. I was completely befuddled by it; I had to be introduced to the notion. I had been a cynic about online matters, not a knowledgable cynic. It was based on received wisdom in an oddly defensive way. I didn't have that setup at home, so I told myself it was all just superficial chitchat anyway. But I had a really substantial hour, very fun; I went an half hour over the time allotted trying to answer everyone's questions, and I must have made a good impression on them in turn, because they asked me to host a show soon after that.

Will man dem entgehen, so muss man schweigen.

Much has been written about Jonathan Lethem since his first novel, Gun, With Occasional Music appeared. He has been named as one of the novelist to watch in the next century. However, with four novels and a short story collection under his belt, his debut remains his strongest novel to date. Conrad Metcalf is a private inquisitor who lives in a futuristic Oakland which is more reminiscent of the seedy gumshoe novel than it is of sparkling towers. This dichotomy is intentional as Lethem mixes the tropes of cyberpunk with the novels of Raymond Chandler. Even the minor characters' names seem as if they could have been lifted from The Big Sleep or Farewell, My Lovely. However, the PI side of Gun, With Occasional Music also resonates with Dashiell Hammett and the films made from his works. The reader can imagine Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre or Mary Astor playing their appropriate roles. Metcalf can only remain out of suspended animation as long as he manages to retain enough karma points, which can be lost for, among other things, rudeness. Unfortunately, in a society in which asking questions is considered taboo, a private inquisitor is going to find his supply of karma quickly depleted. Metcalf finds he needs to ask more questions than he can afford from he is hired by Maynard Stanhurt to tail his wife, Celeste Stanhurt shortly before Maynard is killed.
