The Secret
Two girls discover the secret of life in a sudden line of poetry. I who don't know the secret wrote the line. They told me (through a third person) they had found it but not what it was not even what line it was. No doubt by now, more than a week later, they have forgotten the secret, the line, the name of the poem. I love them for finding what I can't find, and for loving me for the line I wrote, and for forgetting it so that a thousand times, till death finds them, they may discover it again, in other lines in other happenings. And for wanting to know it, for assuming there is such a secret, yes, for that most of all.
Talking to Grief
Ah, Grief, I should not treat you like a homeless dog who comes to the back door for a crust, for a meatless bone. I should trust you.
I should coax you into the house and give you your own corner

42 items Access: Open Denise Levertov was an English-born poet who came to the United States in 1948 and became a naturalized citizen in 1956. She was the daughter of a Welsh mother and a Russian-Jewish father, both of whom claim mystics in their family lines. Levertov's poetry reflects her cultural and spiritual roots as well as her involvement in contemporary political movements. After her move to the United States, Levertov was introduced to the work of William Carlos Willams and became associated with the Black Mountain group of poets, particularly Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, and Robert Duncan. Levertov acknowledged these influences, but disclaimed any membership in a poetic school. Denise Levertov was politically active from the 1960's onwards, initially in the Vietnam War protests and later in the anti-nuclear movement. She was also active as a feminist. Levertov maintained the need for artists to be politically active and much of her poetry of the 1960's and 1970's reflected her political commitments. In addition to writing poetry Levertov has written much about the creative process and the aesthetics of contemporary poetry. She taught at numerous universities, primarily as a visiting artist. Levertov produced more than 20 books of poetry, criticism, and translations and edited several important anthologies.

    Levertov, Denise
With the advent of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War (1959-1975), Levertov devoted much of her energy to antiwar activism as a lecturer and writer. At the same time, she wrote her best-known book of poetry, The Sorrow Dance (1967). It dealt with her feelings of rage and sadness at the war and also at the death of her older sister. Her prolific output after the war ended continued to explore political problems, along with such themes as mysticism, loneliness, and personal pilgrimage. Her later collections include Breathing the Water (1987), A Door in the Hive (1989), Evening Train (1992), New and Selected Essays (1992), Tesserae (1995), and Sands of the Well (1996).
Levertov also worked as the poetry editor of the political magazines The Nation (1961, 1963-1965) and Mother Jones (1975-1978). She taught at universities throughout the United States and was a member of the National Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
With an adequate introduction to her life and works, Denise Levertov is not a difficult author. Levertov can best be made accessible to students when they are familiar with the poet's own prose reflections on poetry, the role of the poet, and "notes" on organic form. You might prepare an introduction to her work by making reference to her quite precise discussion of these themes in The Poet in the World Light Up the Cave (1982); and New and Selected Essays Consider using tapes of Levertov reading her own poetry. The most recent cassette, "The Acolyte" (Watershed), contains a fine sampling from her earlier poetry through Oblique Prayers . Encourage students to listen both to her poetry readings and interviews and to incorporate information from them in class or seminar discussions and presentations or as material for research papers. When students are doing a class presentation, strongly urge them to be certain that their classmates have copies of the poems they will be discussing. Students respond favorably to Levertov's conviction that the poet writes more than "[she] knows." They also respond positively to the fact that an American woman "engaged" poet has spoken out strongly on women's rights, peace and justice issues, race, and other questions on human rights.
