Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Primo Levi (1919-1987) Italian-Jewish writer and chemist, who gained first fame with his autobiographical story SE QUESTO È UN UOMO (1947, If This is a Man) of survival in Nazi concentration camps. The last forty years of his life Levi devoted himself to attempts to deal with the fact that he was not killed in Auschwitz. "The worst survived, that is, the fittest; the best all died," he said. Levi published also poetry, science fiction, essays, and short stories. In 1987, at the age of 67, Levi killed himself. Italo Calvino called Levi "one of the most important and gifted writers of our time." Consider whether this is a man,
Who labours in the mud
Who knows no peace
Who fights for a crust of bread
Who dies at a yes or a no.
Consider whether this is a woman,
Without hair or name
With no more strength to remember
Eyes empty and womb cold
As a frog in winter.
Collected Poems Primo Levi was born in Turin into a Jewish middle-class family. His grandmother Bimba was a baroness. She and her entire family had been made barons by Napoleon, because they has supported him economically. . As a youth Levi knew very little about Jewishness, but Mussolini's anti-Semitic policy soon taught Levi that it was not ''a cheerful little anomaly'' in a Catholic country. An underdeveloped, quiet boy, Levi was derided at school for his size. Through cycling and mountaig climbing he acquired friends, but according to a biography he did not have sexual experiences before meeting his wife, Lucia, in 1946. Just before the Fascist racial law of 1938 forbade Jews access to academic status, Levi started his chemistry studies at the University of Turin. He graduated first in his class in 1941, the year after Italy had entered World War II as an ally of Germany. During the war Levi wrote for the resistance magazine

Primo Levi , born in Turin, Italy, in 1919, and trained as a chemist, was arrested during the Second World War as a member of the anti-Fascist resistance and deported to Auschwitz in 1944. His experience in the death camp and his subsequent travels through Eastern Europe were the subject of powerful memoirs, fiction and poetry. Levi died in Turin in April 1987. Some of Levi's words are more powerful then anything ever expressed about the man-made Nazi atrocities. His memoirs of and refelections on those are light years above careerist, pornographic exploitations by many renowned, award-winning speakers or politicians. As a composer and librettist, inspired by some of Levi's writings, his life and his death, it took me some years to finally begin a grand, seductive opera, to scratch an angel . The project has already aroused interest in some extraordinary performers and has the blessing of the Levi family. will perform excerpts from to scratch an angel as part of their Showcasing American Composers series, May 15th 2001 at 4:00 PM. The full orchestra and soloists presentation will be in Westpark Church, Amsterdam Avenue corner of 86th Street in New York City. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, go

My trade has provided my raw material, the nucleus to which things join ... Chemistry is a struggle with matter, a masterpiece of rationality, an existential parable ... Chemistry teaches vigilance combined with reason." Primo Levi (1919-1987) lived almost his entire life in the same apartment building on Corso Re Umberto in Turin, Italy. He received a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Turin in 1942. After the Second World War, he developed a process for varnishing copper wire, and eventually became manager of the manufacturing plant where the process was commercialized. During his career as an industrial chemist, he wrote only in his spare time, and apparently never considered a career as a fulltime writer. His study, the place where he wrote all his books, was the room where he had been born. Levi might never have written at all, or been published, except for the time he spent away from Turin: he survived a year in Auschwitz and eight months afterwards as a refugee in Russia before he could make his way home. As a biographer, Myriam Anissimov ( Primo Levi: Tragedy of An Optimist , trans. Steve Cox) states

Cory Hunsader "In order for the wheel to turn, for life to be lived, impurities are needed . . . impurity, which gives rise to changes, in other words, to life" -Primo Levi Read this before citing this article! Back to biography list The record of one's life carries with it a veil of uncertainty, for amid that most precarious of all journeys, lies the unspoken discourse between one's emotions. This interplay of emotions, the most intimate of which go largely unspoken, thus seem destined to become forever lost within one's own neural chaos. It is out of this tumultuousness, which is borne our inherent need to reveal the truth', those indeed divine laws of nature, which govern our very being. And so we rejoice, when among us comes one who is able to divulge some element which proves helpful on our search for Socratic truth'; one who's emotional discourse is allowed to escape through the window of poetic license and through us forever resonates. Herein, lies the legacy of Primo Levi, whose insight permeates all who come to know him. Primo Levi was born in Turin, Italy in 1919. He was Jewish-Italian, a tiny minority dating back to the 1st century, but whose antiquity in existence did little to prevent its being outcast. His ancestors had arrived in Piedmont around 1500, hitherto having settled in Spain and Provence, an historic region of southeastern France on the coast of the Mediterranean. They originally had resided in Turin, but after a less than warm welcome', had rooted themselves in various agricultural localities in Southern Piedmont' and there introduced the technology of making silk. Though rejected in Turin, they were never much loved or hated' and stories of unusual persecutions' were not handed down to Primo. Despite this testimonial lack of overt persecution, walls of suspicion kept the Levi's, and the Jewish community as a whole, from full incorporation into Italian society.
