During the German occupation of Italy he was arested as a member of a Jewish partisan group. In January 1944 he was deported to Auschwitz III - Monowitz-Buna labour camp. As a patient in the infirmary when the Germans abandoned the camp, Levi escaped the death marches and was liberated by the Russian army in 1945. His life and experiences in Auschwitz are recalled in much of Levi's writing, most famously in the classic holocaust memoir 'If this is a man'. He developed his thoughts on this in 'Survival in Auschwitz' and 'The drowned and the saved'. 'The Periodic Table', a series of short stories, was only recently published to great acclaim. In 1977 Levi retired from managing a Turin chemical factory in order to write full time. He died in his home in 1987, in a probable case of suicide, still unable to comprehend the enormity of the holocaust.

Family Names Who's who in the Jewish World? Search Order Primo Levi (1919-1987), scientist and writer. He was born in Turin, Italy, son of a civil engineer, member of an acculturated Jewish community and he had little Jewish in his upbringing. He graduated in chemistry at the University of Turin in 1941, when Jews could not be employed. In 1943, Levi joined the anti-Fascist partisans and was captured and deported to Auschwitz. Toward the end of his ten-month incarceration and at death's door, he was selected to work in a laboratory connected with the German war effort. This saved his life and after the war he returned to Turin where he became an authority on ceramic wire coating. Levi wrote books inspired by his Auschwitz experiences starting with the masterpiece If This is a Man . His next book The Truce described his odyssey back home after the war ended. The Periodic Table used the periodical table of chemical elements to literary ends. Levi was internationally acclaimed in Italian and world literature and was seen as one of the great writers on Holocaust themes. He committed suicide, apparently the result of a severe attack of depression.

War and Medicine Summary Primo Levi was imprisoned at the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944. He survived the experience, probably in part because he was a trained chemist and as such, useful to the Nazis. Soon after the war ended, he wrote several books about his experience. The Drowned and the Saved, however, was written 40 years later and is the work of memory and reflection not only on the original events, but also on how the world has dealt with the Holocaust in the intervening years. Fundamental to his purpose is the fear that what happened once can happen (and in some respects, has happened) again. Chapter 1, "The Memory of the Offense," dissects out the vagaries of memory, rejection of responsibility, denial of unacceptable trauma and out and out lying among those who were held to account by tribunals as well as among the victimized. Levi does not spare himself: "This very book is drenched in memory . . . it draws from a suspect source and must be protected against itself" (34). Even so, he insists, memory and the historical record are crucial to combating Nazi assumptions that their deeds would go unnoticed (they were destroying the evidence), or disbelieved.
