Admirers, students, and critical readers of C. S. Lewis and the Inklings, sit down and stay a while! This site's purpose is to provide key information, original scholarship, and other links to hypertextual resources about these writers and their literary "kin." Its center is "Jack" Lewis, but it also attempts to provide links to other Inklings resources, that group of Anglo/Irish writers and friends who met as a community of like-minded thinkers and readers to create some of the 20th Century's best fantasy literature and Christian apologetics.

The Mere Christianity Study Guide

The English scholar, science-fiction writer, and Christian apologist Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland. He was educated privately and at the University of Oxford, and was a member of The Inklings, a group of Oxford writers including J. R. R. Tolkien and Charles Williams. A fellow and tutor at Oxford from 1925 to 1954, he was subsequently professor of medieval and Renaissance English literature at the University of Cambridge.
Lewis's critical works include Allegory of Love: A Study in Medieval Tradition (1936), which examines the connections between medieval literature and courtly love, and A Preface to Paradise Lost (1942). Lewis was known to a large public, however, as a persuasive and passionate advocate of conservative Christianity through books which examined and explained moral and religious problems. His Perelandra trilogy Out of the Silent Planet Perelandra (1943), and

The Discarded Image:
An Introduction to Medieval and Renaissance Literature
C.S. Lewis
Cambridge University Press 1994 A book review by Danny Yee I am not a Lewis fan: his apologetic writings are too often tendentious or shallow; Narnia lost its fascination when I discovered Lord of the Rings ; and his science fiction, though worthy, never left a lasting impression. Judging by The Discarded Image , however, he is perhaps best remembered as a medievalist It is not a general introduction to medieval and Renaissance literature, as the subtitle might suggest, but rather a survey of its philosophical and intellectual background, a description of that synthesis of Christian and classical ideas which Lewis calls the "Medieval Model". He begins by examining some of the sources which contributed towards this model, most of which are now little known: from the classical period Cicero's Somnium Scipionis , Lucan, Statius, and Apuleius' De Deo Socratis ; from late antiquity Chalcidius, Macrobius, Pseudo-Dionysius and Boethius. Lewis then describes the medieval universe, from the trans-Lunar heavens to the Earth, and its inhabitants - the "angels" in the heavens, the ambiguously located "longaevi" (of whom a faint echo survives in the modern "fairies"), the animals and man, with his different Souls, Spirits and Humours. The medieval conception of history and education is briefly touched on. The final chapter considers the influence of the Model, and the epilogue its epistemological status vis a vis the "modern Model".

C. S. Lewis
Served in WWI as a member of the British Army's Somerset Light Infantry, where Lewis was a second lieutenant, and had the nickname, "Jack." Wounded in the back, Lewis wryly commented, "Oddly enough, by a British shell."
Noted as a prolific mainstream writer with Christian/religious themes. Friend and associate of J.R.R.Tolkien. Taught at Magdalen College at Oxford and later went to work for Cambridge as professor of Medieval and Renaissance English. An intellectual's intellectual, whose works are widely studied. Influenced by the works of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, Lewis was finally inspired to write SF by the works of Olaf Stapledon. "The idea of other planets exercised upon me a peculiar, heady attraction, which was quite different from any other of my literary intersts. That interest, when the fit was upon me, was ravenous, like a lust..." Lewis's Fantasy & Science Fiction work basically divides into three areas: (1) Children's stories, (2) a Martian SF trilogy, and (3) a series of short stories. Many of the last were published in America's , Lewis's favorite American pulp.

The Creator of Narnia: C. S. Lewis
    by Ann-Marie Imbornoni

    C. S. Lewis, or Jack Lewis, as he preferred to be called, was born in Belfast, Ireland (now Northern Ireland) on November 29, 1898. He was the second son of Albert Lewis, a lawyer, and Flora Hamilton Lewis. His older brother, Warren Hamilton Lewis, who was known as Warnie, had been born three years earlier in 1895. Early Days
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. A Painful Loss
This somewhat idyllic boyhood came to an end for Lewis when his mother became ill and died of cancer in 1908. Barely a month after her death the two boys were sent away from home to go to boarding school in England. Lewis hated the school, with its strict rules and hard, unsympathetic headmaster, and he missed Belfast terribly. Fortunately for him, the school closed in 1910, and he was able to return to Ireland. After a year, however, he was sent back to England to study. This time, the experience proved to be mostly positive. As a teenager, Lewis learned to love poetry, especially the works of Virgil and Homer. He also developed an interest in modern languages, mastering French, German, and Italian. An Oxford Scholar
In 1916 Lewis was accepted at University College, the oldest college (founded 1249) at Oxford University. Oxford, along with Cambridge University, had been a leading center of learning since the Middle Ages. Soon after he entered the University, however, Lewis chose to volunteer for active duty in World War I, to

    The Chronicles of Narnia
is a true masterpiece of the world's literature, and I have never met anyone who has read any of the seven volumes and feels otherwise. This is one of the very few sets of books that should be read three times: in childhood, early adulthood, and late in life. In brief, four children travel repeatedly to a world in which they are far more than mere children, and everything is far more than it seems. Richly told, populated with fascinating characters, perfectly realized in detail of world and pacing of plot, and profoundly allegorical, with continual threading of the timeless issues of good and evil, and faith and hope. Very Highest Recommendation. (Editor's Note: Unless you are replacing a missing volume from a set, I encourage you to consider getting all seven volumes, available in reasonably priced mass market paperback trade paperback , or hardcover editions.)
