His 1948 book on the United States as prototype Cosmopolis, America and Cosmic Man , greatly influenced that pioneer exponent of electronic globalism, Marshall McLuhan, whose famous phrase "Global Village" it inspired. Lewis struck sparks in all directions - as novelist, critic, philosopher, poet, sociologist, travel writer, autobiographer and, far from least, as painter with galvanizing styles all his own. The Wyndham Lewis Society has operated for almost 25 years with the aim of making this invigorating and controversial figure more widely known and better understood. It now publishes a mailed journal called the Wyndham Lewis Annual featuring articles, reviews and an ongoing bibliography all generated by the growing scope of Lewis studies. Several times a year there is a posted news roundup known as the Lewisletter , which can be sampled here in the form of its latest issue. The Society also organizes periodic conferences. Biographical Sketch
Wyndham Lewis was a novelist, critic, and a predominant experimental artist who founded Vorticism, an early 20th century English abstract art movement. Lewis was born November 18, 1882, near Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada, to Captain Charles Edward Lewis of New York and Anne Stuart of Great Britain. In 1893 his parents separated, and he moved with his mother to London. At the age of 16, Lewis enrolled in the Slade School of Art, where he spent the next three years studying. Following his formal education, Lewis left for the continent; between 1901 and 1909 he spent most of his time in France, but also traveled in Germany, Spain, and Holland. Lewis returned to England in 1909, and that same year saw three of his stories published in the

A very fine copy in a slightly worn dustjacket. This is the author's satirical masterpiece. Lewis was a leader, along with Ezra Pound, of the Vorticist movement, but his savage attacks on his contemporaries, most particularly the Bloomsbury group, alienated him from his peers. Lewis continually criticized the emptyness and mechanization of twentieth century life, and in THE APES OF GOD he gave full vent to his frustrations. Lewis was the most original and idiosyncratic of the major British artists working in the first decades of the 20th century, and he was among the first artists in Europe to produce completely abstract paintings and drawings. He built his personal style on features taken from Cubism and Futurism but did not accept either. He accused Cubism of failure to 'synthesise the quality of LIFE with the significance or spiritual weight that is the mark of all the greatest art' and of being mere visual acrobatics. The Futurists, he wrote, had the vivacity that the Cubists lacked, but they themselves lacked the grandness and the 'great plastic qualities' that Cubism achieved. His own work, he declared, was 'electric with a mastered and vivid vitality'. He wrote several books, including novels, notably 'Tarr' (1918), and collections of essays and criticism. 'Blasting and Bombadiering' (1937), 'Wyndham Lewis the Artist' (1939), and 'Rude Assignment' (1950) are autobiographical.
